imageBungie Breaks Up with Activision, Regains Full Destiny Publication Rights - MMORPG.com

Bungie has announced that it has retaken full publication rights to the Destiny IP from Activision. The team made the announcement on the Bungie site starting with a bit of a rehash of the history between the two companies that started in 2010. While no date is set for the severance, Bungie indicated that the process will be completed "as seamlessly as possible". Read the full letter after the jump.

The Activision-Blizzard cost-cutting measures just keep coming.

I mean...I get it since Destiny 2 probably didn't bring enough money to Activision for publishing it on BattleNet, but...I'm kinda surprised. Activision will only be publishing in-house stuff now, it seems.

So what's going to happen to my free copy of Destiny 2 via Battle Net?

That's actually a good question. Maybe they'll launch on Steam or Epic? God forbid they create the "Bungie Launcher". :/

What about our characters and progress?

Yep it's definitely cause for concern.

This is good news. Activision has become a toxic company for employees, partners, subsidiaries, and consumers. I feel Bungie can potentially spread its wings with Destiny 3 without publisher interference. If only Blizzard could break away. :(

I have my doubts that this will impact Destiny 2. There's too much baggage (such as the afforementioned Destiny 2 on Battlenet). Expect Destiny 3 for the PS5/XBox Potato Supreme to be the point that this actually matters.

Got the feeling they will have to do full transfers to whatever they do with the launcher. Most likely just a stand alone thing, at least hopefully.

I have a feeling this will be the start of something huge that will end up with a movie entitled "End of the Goliath."

I think the real question is who is going to publish Destiny 3. I highly doubt that Bungie will want to remain independent despite their turbulent history with publishers, because development of a series on this scale takes a grand budget.

Perhaps their former overlords at Microsoft, already in the process of purchasing studios, will view this as an opportunity to enrich their exclusives and make them an offer they can't refuse?

Could always go back to daddy Microsoft.  Microsoft is snatching up properties left and right.
Right. My money is on Microsoft or Bethesda/Zenimax.

I think I would personally prefer the latter, as, despite my low opinion of Bethesda Game Studios as a developer, their parent company seems to be pretty hands-off and publishes solid games under ID Software and other studios. And Destiny is exactly the sort of IP that would fit into their portfolio.

That one that Bungie claimed would change how FPSs were played forever?  Yes, please.

Good news for Bungie and not so good for Blizzard. Now they will have Activisions full attention. My days with WoW are already small and they are getting smaller at an accelerated rate.

This is a very interesting development for sure. I honestly expected Blizzard to separate from Activision and maybe that will come.

I always found it hard to stomach that Bungie bungled the game. They only made what could be argued as the greatest scifi FPS prior to that so yeah. Maybe just maybe without Activision to interfere they can make something special again. Or could have been a one trick pony but glad they are getting out from what appears on the whole to be the titanic.

I'm not a fan of Activision like everyone else, but if you think that Activision was responsible for that miserable existence that we call Destiny 2 then I think you are wrong. I doubt Activision went and said hey just rename the game and let's do this.
