I don't understand the point of this article. There are a ton of older MMOs that are still active that would benefit from a sequel but for some reason GW2 is the one singled out? I know WoW is still huge but if any game would benefit from a sequel it would be that one. A better engine, dynamic combat and other things would put so much new life into that game.

I think you are just over analyzing the point of the article. It was only to generate a discussion around the topic, it's not like it's happening the more we discuss it based on the article lol.

I just realized that the PVP meta for GW1 (especially in GvG) has a lot of similarities to MOBA design. Or even a trading card battle.

So, maybe instead of a GW3 MMO we get a GW MOBA spinoff.

    Sorry :p
  • someforumguysomeforumguy Member RarePosts: 4,088
I wouldn't mind single player/coop spin offs within the GW universe running alongside GW2. I don't think GW3 will happen before all elder dragons are dealt with. Then GW3 could happen in a future with no elder dragons and whatever new threat arises.

Whatever decision ANET makes, if there's a new GW game i'm in... as long as it is not a mobile game.
A remastered standalone GW1 spinoff for singleplayer/coop would definately work yes. They already have the logic for the hero npcs. I really like that idea. With the possibility to run your own dedicated server. That would be very nice.

And while I am dreaming, moddable too. Not just skins etc, but even quests and maps.

I think this could be a very good game actually.

With how badly they've screwed up GW2 starting with HoT, I don't want these clowns anywhere near GW3. Maybe if they bring back the teams that made GW1 or even vanilla GW2, I could get excited. This team? No.
GW2 started out so great. But now it just seems like a hot mess that's all over the place. I still don't think MMO's need all these different stories in them either. I got really sick of all the living story crap that seems to flood modern MMO's today.

If they were to make a GW3 then both GW2 and GW3 would fail.

The current player base would leave because GW2 would no longer be supported and by having 2 active MMOs under the same title would divide profits. Everquest is a perfect example of what not to do. This is the exact reason WoW will never make WoW 2. From a business perspective it is a bad idea to compete with yourself.

GW3 would be a great opportunity to refine combat, create a truly open environment and apply the things they reneged on from the initial "manifesto video".

With the above said, I look forward to the backlash of Guild Wars: Mobile and Guild Wars Battle Royale because that's what a betting man would expect.

Every time i see the ending to the manifesto, i remember how much i hate that those Leviathans are not in-game.

The only person who wasn't full of crap in the manifesto video was the Art Director.

I don't know what game Ree Soesbee got to f#$%ing play but she must have quit before that first World Boss Train.

I don't think having a guild Wars 3 is a good idea for a lot of reasons that people are mentioning above. I haven't even come close to enjoying all the content guild Wars 2 has to offer although I don't have as much time to play MMOs like I did many years ago. I am not much of a PVP person either though so maybe that's why I don't want to move on so quickly.
Sorry for saying this but there are other games out there like Everquest 2 that really don't get much love from people these days which could be revitalized if people hop on and give it another try. People might even inspire them to add much more PVP content to the game if there is enough request. It isn't artistically beautiful like Guild Wars 2 or WOW but the game does look very good with the graphics on very high settings if your PC can run it. It still takes a very good graphics card to run Everquest 2 at very high settings.

Personally I don't mind the traditional MMO setting but I also like how Guild Wars 2 plays. I really liked WildStar and am sad that it went away. I just really don't have a lot of time to play many MMOs at once as well as I'm sure other people are in the same boat. That's my two cents.

We shouldn't be even considering a 3rd game in the series this soon and yes its way to early, the game is only roughly 6 years old which is peanuts if you were to compare WoW stayed in most of its prime till 10 years in.

They didn't pursue anything! LMAO! Oh man it's like reading an article from Fox News, how much spin is this going to have? 100% spin! LOL
First, all the talent left the train wreck before it began, that should have been the warning sign.
Second, the ones left over didn't lead properly so we got some half baked piece of garbage that didn't deliver.
3rd they tried their darnedest before the thorns expansion to remove every pre-launch beta interview from everywhere they were literally caught calling all of their publicists and having them delete the footage!
Finally, when confronted they archived their old forums and censored their new forums so that anyone who spoke out with well thought out forum posts were the enemy and had to go!

My prediction for a GW3 is this.
It will be the same as Destiny 2.....a ghosttown because A: it will be far too late to try to "fix" what they never provided in the GW2 game B: people are tired of their broken promises and they will have moved on C: they have made it clear that this company is only interested in one thing, profits, while they fail to deliver on the most basic of player needs.

So even if they come out with a GW3 even if it's not Arenanet that's making it, all of us who tried to stay with the game as long as possible who made it our business to try to help the talent that was left after launch make the game the best it could be (which btw never happened because someone who was in charge over there was too ignorant to know what to do with their huge archive of suggestions from beta into launch to improve the game they had) made it our business to tell everyone we could out on the net on anything and everything that was left over that Arenanet was not to be trusted and neither was the publisher!

They can try to come out with something sure it could even have a similar visual but no one's going to buy it, they've dug their own grave over there at NCSoft.

GW3 would most likely be a mobile game.

"Do you guys not have phones?"  :P

    Of course I do. ;)
But I won't use it for gaming unless it is very casual, like playing some mini games while waiting for the bus/train/plane. Just watched a video of Runescape mobile and half the time the player was fighting with the UI/tiny screen. I got ten fingers, a keyboard and mouse and two 22'' screen. Why should I cut all those off and just play with my two thumbs looking at a tiny display ?

Unfortunately mobile gaming is a big thing and I fear that more and more money will go that way (already does) and yes this will have a negative impact on PC gaming. PC gaming will not die but less money means less games/innovation etc. .
Anyway, this is definitely a topic for a different thread.

Yes, with at least three good MMOs coming in 2019~2020, GW2 will lose a huge number of its player base.

GUILDWARS launched April 2005, GW2 on August 2012, the cycle seems to suggest a new entry in the next year or so. I bet it'll be more of a sandbox title and one that has companion apps and games and is multi-platform.

GW2 felt good in beginning. To GW1 I went after that and 10 minutes was enough. So I don't know about it. I think the underwater swimming and fights is still best of all mmo's in GW2 ? Crafting too difficult and time consuming but still one of the best. And most I liked that atmosphere when pvp was mostly missing. So the players are friendly.

Making a new mmo is a big risk and effort. How to keep both pve and pvp players. For example in ESO they tried to isolate the pvp to the center city. Now you see it everywhere, in banks, shops, all places where you should concentrate on smthng (like fishing or crafting) they disturb continuously. It tells something of the game atmosphere. Hostile or friendly. Pvp's would say adult or childish. This is why many leave now eso so it's business question. How to keep everybody happy.

Additionally we are in crossroads - where we are going in technique. PC/console/mobile/TV/VR/Browser ? Is the Microsoft graphics path only option ? I always hope something new is invented (but reason is I started playing when there were games only on IBM big mills).

I played GW1 and lasted about a month before I quit. I lasted about 3 months in GW2 before I gave it up. As long as they keep the same combat mechanics, I'm not interested in another GW.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

Exactly and much more. Good writers can only write books. Good photographers can only make photos. Good composers can only make music. Good movie producers only make movies. But mmo companies can make all that and much more in one very cheap package.

The problem with a new Guild Wars is how heavily they've monetized GW2. The GW2 hardcore (the only players who remain) will be against moving to a new platform, having to start all over AND having to fork over more money by means of microtransactions. That being said, I'm not sure what can be done to further prolong the game's success. Expansions have received great reviews, but are unable to sustain those new adopters after the fun of the new content has worn off. ArenaNet is banking on players buying cosmetics, and the current players do so in spades.

A Guild Wars 3 would be a huge gamble, and given how WildStar fell off the wayside, I highly doubt ArenaNet will receive the funding. I suspect there's a final expansion in the pipeline before the game falls into maintenance mode.

Again, all conjecture from me. I would definitely check out a Guild Wars 3 if it were to surface, but I feel it is unlikely to happen.

GW2 model is same as it was for GW1 plus they have income from account upgrades and cosmetic item sales , ArenaNet knew how much profit they can expect in the future years so they set their goals for next few years. We today know whats planned next for GW2 , Expansion 3 is on the way development started right after POF and will be launched after LS Season 5 ends.We will have one more episode in Season 4 and then 5-6 more in Season 5 sum it with 2-3 months gap and we can assume that Expansion 3 can be expected mid>end 2020.
