Why? Old MMOs were boring as hell. Why do you think very few played them? Because they were junk to most people. New MMOs actually focus on FUN (like WoW, GW2, BDO etc), not boring mindless forced group grinding that some MMOs in development want to go back to. Those MMOs will be as niche as MMOs of old were. WoW was first to focus on fun and easier less mundane/forced group content and brought the massive success MMOs see today.

Of course even WoW/GW2/BDO and others do have grinding, but at least its a ton of fun and not stand in one spot or forced waiting for a group to accomplish anything. Or in BDOs case its kinda standing in one spot, but it has a ton fun gameplay. And a lot of the much more fun and new MMOs doesn't take years and years to get to max level and accomplish anything.

And other game genres have gotten a lot better overall as well.

The only thing gotten worse is cash shops and loot boxes...gameplay wise, MMOs and games in general are vastly improved.

OP are you also finding things other activities outside of gaming also not as fun as they used to be?

If yes - you might be dealing with depression. Nothing to worry about, as it happens to everyone eventually - the main thing about depression is to address it early.

Ignoring depression can have devastating results longterm as it can become clinical depression which is a serious illness. Untreated clinical depression actually causes neural pathways in the brain to "rewire" and once this happens treatment options are not very effective.

Take care of yourself and keep on keeping on!
That depends on a rather extreme amount of circumstances. It's...really not a good depression indicator. Unless one is attuned to helping the Xanax peddlers, rather than solving the actual problem.
You don't always need drugs to solve depression.
Also using a depressant (xanax) to treat depression would be a red flag.

OP, try Guild Wars 2. It's different enough from other MMOs to at least be worth a try and the core game is free. Nothing to lose if you haven't already tried it.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
