The question here is when. This game should be well into development by now. It should have been ready for reveal, unless Blizzard has shifted to a Bethesda-esque reveal months before release strategy.
It should have never have come down to 4 years of borderline maintenance mode for Diablo 3 with a bleak horizon.
They started the development straight after Blizzcon
I have some real problems with the motivations of Kotaku. I am not sure what they are but Its definitely not tech/internet/gaming journalism. I guess even a "bought and payed for" news outlet publishes a legit story sometimes. I am skeptical of anything they publish to say the least.
Didn't the last Kotaku "Diablo leak" get debunked within a day?
Not exactly. Basically, the way in which it would be delivered was wrong, but he was still right for the most part. Also, Jason is very much a reputable industry journalist when it comes to leaks. He was right about Fallout 76, Fallout 4, and Doom 2016 to name a few. He hasn't been wrong much at all (if at all) when it comes to leaks.
lol, ya believable. they got called out for having nothing and massacred epic nightmare PR blunder. Press release "we just started errr we BEEN working on d4 so we could put this out and try to quell the epic disaster we created".
How far along are you? Well uhm been alot of delays and problems so we are not very far along (uhm just started yesterday and really we have no plans to actually make it but we have to say something our stocks got hammered).
If they thought the art style was the reason D3 was not successful then Blizzard is very very out of touch. I do not remember anyone complaining about the art style not being devilish enough. However with that said Sabrina on netflix was infinitely darker than D3 so yeah.
I did it was terrible. When I look to diablo I want a dark gritty atmosphere, and characters/animations. d3 was a big fluffy cartoony light style art. Its why i dont play WOW, dont care for the fluffy cartonn style art, same for wildstar. I get that some people love that style and its great they have games that cater to it, but alot of others are looking for something a little more mature, not sure we will ever get it from blizzard though as it has turned into a big jack of all master of nothing appeal to ever possible group mega corp.
Diablo 3 failed partially because Blizzard weren't sure who to appeal to.
Blizzard's success arguably came about because at the time they knew how to make compromises: produce relatively hardcore, niche games that could potentially appeal to mainstream audiences yet did not cater for them. Diablo 3 was half-assed in that regard, bad game-design and premature release sealed the game's fate.
Diablo 4 will face similar issues, and Blizzard's confidence is probably at an all time low right now, one can easily imagine the internal issues they're having to deal with after this year's Blizzcon.
Can isometric projection still be used to create a successful Diablo 4 ?
Can diablo 3's (or diablo 2's) meta-game be revamped and be successful in Diablo 4 ?
Unless blizzard ask themselves the right questions, and are willing to face the answers, Diablo 4 will be sub-par. Diablo 4 should to be made for those who like the diablo universe... it should not be made for as many as possible... That is what made blizzard games so appealing and respected.
I personally doubt they can ever deliver. The only hope I have is that the worst Blizzcon ever creates enough internal turmoil to wipe the slate clean, as far as Diablo 4 is concerned.
Unfortunately, a rotten apple spoils the bunch. The franchise is lost, and the company is losing its core principles one after the other.

No, I think they knew exactly who they wanted to appeal to. And the game is very much NOT a failure except in the eyes of people who wanted something different.
Now, if the rumor is true and they want to get back to something darker/grittier I would be very happy.
the Art Design in Diablo 3 was not to my taste. Still, it was fun for my play play through, including the expansion I bought and I felt I got my money's worth.

Lets not forget the shitstorm that was release.
They made some pretty significant changes to turn D3's fortunes around.
None of this matters. Everyone knows that Blizzard takes an excessively long time to develop anything and when it does release, it will be a bug riddled mess just like D3.
If Blizzard didn't exist, people on mmorpg wouldn't have anything to write about.
