I have been a member here since 2005 and I have seen many changes. But in particular I wanted to mention that the level of civility on these boards, while not perfect, has vastly improved over the years.

There had been a time in the past when you couldn't say "good morning" here without being flamed. That isn't the case anymore. I credit the mods for creating an environment where you can discuss things (usually) without it becoming toxic.

Also I am glad to have posters to hang out with who make interesting observations and keep the site fresh.

Thanks to all.

J/k, the boards are fun, the moderating is good, and the no lifers, ahh, i mean regulars are a blast. Overall, ive been on the boards for over a decade but have done the majority of my posting in the past year.

They've cleaned up a lot of the racism in the past year which has made it much easier to browse. The no-lifers and daily "LETS DEFINE WHAT AN MMO IS" posts keep me coming back.

I've been coming to this site for years and have never seen anything racist here (ohh a rhyme).

But yeah the obvious trolling has went down significantly the last few years. Though TBQH I kinda liked some of the more clever ones.

There have been a few racist posts.

I remember someone posting a huge porn pic with essentially a "screw you mmorpg."

The issues that some people have are amazing.

In some ways this forum has become my mmorpg. ;)

I will never forget when a friend told me Reddit had cleaned up now, they thought MMORPG.com was worse for rants etc. I had real problems accepting that, but if you check them out Reddit is not the site it once was.

So its good to hear that someone thinks MMORPG is getting better, I think so to, but hard to judge the extent of that.

What I didn't like for a while was the habit of some to go on specific forums of games they self admittedly either never played or didn't play anymore since a long time, and spam negative crap, insulting the players of those games in the process. Thankfully, this has apparently been seriously toned down, and the game specific forums are quite pleasant to read nowadays.
Yep the Star Citizen forum was chock full of that a few years ago. That is the biggest change I have seen here. After the Mods cleaned out that cesspool the sale of tin foil went down by half.

Think when I got flamed out for being something I'm not this year, changes where made and people saw how silly it looked ? I don't know.  Maybe I credit myself to much :) .
    Can you elaborate?

I agree with your post 100%. I love coming here still, it's the only site I've been around for over 10 years. Discussions have become a lot more civil.

Glad you guys feel this way! It was a pretty explicit goal of mine to fix the sort of Wild West environment we had here when I came on board in 2009. It's taken some time and a lot of hard work from our team, but I feel we've made some clear improvements over the years. Nothing's perfect though, but we're doing what we can.

I still see certain users harassed and treated bad even if they make a good post. For example there was a guy that always talked about what he thought MMOs were. But the people here got so angry over something so stupid. because their precious old definition of MMOs were no longer valid and the guy was banned lol. I know I said destiny games were an MMO because I think the destiny series are a type of MMO and got a warning for it rofl.

But the reason its better here is because a lot of the old posters I saw seem to be banned, that or maybe some quit the forums. The forums aren't very active like they used to be here. So its like a popular MMO that used to have a junk community (age of conan for example) and now because the community killed itself and the community is so small that the community seems a lot better but really its because it isn't as popular as it used to be.

And small communities are usually better than they used to be because they are small and small communities are always "better" than large communities, with the downside that everything becomes an echo chamber and extremism kicks in. Like going to a tiny town some place and the tiny town of 30 people are super religious and then kick you out if you aren't religious or not the same type of religion they are ((and yes these places exist outside of movies).

So in my example above, if someone says they think destiny is an MMO, the echo chamber of oldschool MMO extremism kicks in and they get banned/warned for it.

Personally, I like reddit a lot more. You can go into the destiny forum and say "is this MMO any good?" and none of the mods warn or ban for it and no one cares...because no one cares what MMOs are or used to be or have changed. Because its a big pile of nothingness that people here take to such extremes (hence oldschool MMO extremism) they'll mass harrass any thread/post/user.

But yes, this forum is still better than /r/mmorpg, that subreddit is a cesspool.

I pretty much stopped coming here except occasionally. But I remember even a couple years back that the forums would have new posts/threads almost every page refresh. Even late at night US time the forums were lively. So this forum is kinda dead, dunno how the actual site is for visitors though. But like I said, small populations tend to be a lot friendlier and better than big huge communities.

Like besides my post I made, that one guy that called everything an MMO was banned because he went against the oldschool MMO extremism and was not welcomed here. Like a religious small town of 30 people or whatever, hidden away in the boondocks with a dirt road going in. I'm sure those 30 people are super friendly with each other because they all agree.

I would have to see proof anyone ever got warned or banned by a moderator here for calling Destiny or any other game a MMO when others might disagree.

Heck, if that was true they'd have to perma ban most of the staff here, being some of the more egregious offenders.

A few years ago (5 maybe?), there were a couple of posters that knew how to get under my skin. I ended up taking a break for 2 or so years (finding a second home at Bethesada's forums) and came back. It certainly is a more enjoyable experience for me. Putting some posters on block has been a godsend, too ;)

I also don't go to "all the neighborhoods", so I think I miss out on a lot of "poopy posts"

    Great post @Amathe!

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Well this is disappointing. It means all my attempts at site-wide anarchy have gone largely unnoticed.

I'll have to start upping the ante.

Plastic wrap on toilet seats. Approval of Star Citizen. An evil Bill Murphy mask with a big curly mustache.  I might even call Fortnite an MMO.  You guys can't stop me!

Some of my best posts occurred before Laura's short stay.  I was never warned or banned for them but a couple of hundred of my posts would just disappear after a few hours or couple of days.  I knew how to balance on the edge of 'too much' back then.

Still never banned. Still don't have a warning flag.  Don't have much fodder today since most debate here attacks the subject instead of the person.  I do still find the occasional complete lack of reasoning to pick at.
