They haven't started voicing anything, it's gonna be longer than that.
Now you don't know what you talking about, what has to be voice-acted is voice-acted on the PU, especially the mission givers.

What I think you are going at is the wandering NPCs do not speak, but by no means can CIG voice act them on any traditional way, because they have proper cities and also have to do the procedural generation of NPCs to spawn with stuff... traditional voice-acting is not realistic in any way but endless repetition, I would think they are cooking up something to be able to assign random chats to all AI you are not meant to directly interact with without individual recordings..

Not sure what will be the solution but traditional voice-acting on up to thousands of AI seems insanity, maybe a procedural system.

Oh yeah, I've seen that, but is a visual bug the elevators still work, I am not sure if Levski still has the murderous Elevators but on Truckstops I only died by lack of atmosphere in the admin office room.

But, you really haven't been trapped on Levski because of the elevator of death?

Oh yeah, bro, you're right i forgot they use same NPC for all quest givers. It's not gonna take long copy/paste.

As of 2018-02-16, CIG has a total of 475 staff working on Star Citizen.

What? Not even close. The exact opposite, the mission givers are the most unique and worked on NPCs, they have full and specific motion and facial capture per giver, as all different actors, and several game systems attached to them from mission generation to player reputation.

Ruto, Miles Eckart and the first female one in 3.3, Recco Battaglia. The 3.3.5 one as shown in the citcon demo is Clovus Darneely.

This is way above the MMO standard for a quest giver, that much I know.

Are you talking about the main questlines or the ones that give side missions from your display? Because I think you're wrong here.

I guess you didn't understand this pun...

Medical delivery runs... Pick up guy, the guy you deliver shit to...

Yeah, it's actually very impressive. Looks very good, for 3 minutes. Beautiful CGI.

You don't know how to pun then.

There are multiple types of missions but some are harder to get, like escorts and bounty hunts, now there is also FPS AI added to some missions and scramble races.

I think the Mission Givers will have their own story chain from the leaked recorded voice scripts on Miles and such; after that, they just deliver missions from the procedural system.

Yeah, the spam showing off the graphics is really nice. But, when can I see a tech demo of hired NPCs crewing a players ship? Or the Hull C working as it was sold. Or docking with other ships and stations. Or capturing a bounty alive and stowing him in your bounty hunter ship that they sold. Or a demo of the prison system.

Graphics are great and all, but after all these years, I'd like to see gimmicks working that they sold a ton of ships upon. Can't distract everybody with random, pretty screenshot spam forever.

"Sorry guys, we can't get the bounty system working. Please refer to the disclaimer for any complaints. Oh, and thanks for buying all those bounty hunter ships!"

All that money for a "minimum viable product"?  That is not exactly friendly marketing terms.  I hope the game is worth it and the IPO can one day be worth it.  I just cannot see how even the most ardent supporter can be ok with this given how much money has been sunk in already.
The "most ardent supporters" already know for years the game is meant to release as one MVP, the game has one HUGE scope, and tbh there's no reason as to why should it not release a polished core version of what the game is and expand upon non-core content and features later.

There was a time 100 star systems was just the space area with some stations and such, but now every planet, every moon, every city exists and can be visited seamlessly in the world, the workload is one entirely different beast, makes no sense to delay the game for as long that would take to deliver.

Having artist driven creation of planets and areas has its advantages and disadvantages, but that's how they achieve the quality that they do.

Does Marketing have that much control <snip>
Yes. "Good enough" is the order of the day.

Last year they forgot what a (proper) alpha is and were trying to get everything 100% .Things stalled, lots of negative posts = bad marketing.

And no money = no development.

Conversely progress - this year 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2 and when it lands 3.3 - each one "better" "more rounded" more "feature complete" = good marketing.

And marketing is huge. In todays environment big publishers (Activision etc.) may spend as much on marketing as they do on making the game - or they pay for a big IP (FIFA, Star Wars etc.) Same deal for films btw.

Clearly SC isn't spending huge amounts on marketing. No Chuck Norris ads. The alpha is by far and away the best marketing tool they have. Which is - as I said - what they forgot last year when they tried to fix every bug before pushing out stuff. It was also WoWs biggest marketing tool as well before it came out.

Its a double edged sword though. It showcases the good and the bad. The progress and the bugs. The decisions to leave bugs until later whilst they push out the first versions of new stuff. And like I said last year they forgot this.

Edit: I cannot comment on bugs specifically but I do remember the AoC pre-launch "beta" - couple of weeks long. About half the players saw huge numbers of bugs, the rest not so much. Turns out it was an AMD / NVidia issue and the pre-launch patch fixed "most stuff" for "most people". Nearest thing to a magic bullet patch ever seen (usually its what you see is what you get!). The point being if some people say they get a bug and others say they don't ... I assume they are both right! And behind the discrepancy a reason.

;@gervaise1 in a nutshell good marketing is good updates, it's what they have been doing, it's why the 3.3 branch news reception is being positive.

The backers don't bother about the PTU issues like @NorseGod's hate rants because people here know very well what to expect from PTU and how it flows, so it's pointless to even go have a go at unreleased builds.

So gladly their strategy does work, and people like NorseGod represent a minority of the backers who feel entitled the testing branch should be as stable/complete as the Live branch.

Why release when it is so profitable in alpha?

Maybe somebody at CIG needs to make a big boy decision and use some of that $200M+ to hire more people.
    For core tech?

As for voice stuff though: they have had actors in - obviously to do SQ42 - so who knows what they have and haven't recorded. "Straightforward" no risk suff though so if they have opted to focus more on core tech first that is a good thing yes?

I do not remember the kickstarter saying that one day we will release a minimum product.  I vaguely and I might be off here but the video saying this is what we need to release this game.  I just wonder when people will stop expecting so little from developers that they can release pieces.  I realize the scope and it is huge and hope one day they accomplish it.  Not a hater but more of a neutral party in this case. But in fairness it is not like this is an indie game with limited backing.  This is a 200 million dollar minimum viable product....
It's because they did not, and there is a Reddit AMA back then where CR admitted that not all stretch goals would be in by-product launch, that is buried somewhere lol

This was said years ago, I think in 2015 when the MVP was mentioned, this just means a version number, it's why nobody is bothered by this, the main core of why the MVP is a good thing is because it allows the LIVE service of the game to start, the actual persistent game that won't be facing progression wipes and all that, updates continue, features and content release, and no biggie.

Why release when it is so profitable in alpha?
They are only legally obligated to demonstrate that they are "in development" to take money and deny refunds. Nothing really has to be working correctly as long as they can demonstrate that in court.

He does not know what he talks about, the voice acting and motion capture fronts are well strong on both SC beyond SQ42, everything that needs it for what in-game is already voice acted, you can refer to the mission givers animation and voice acting to see it.

They have opened an actual new studio in the UK dedicated to this for a reason, it supports both SQ42 and SC.

Sadly in the real development world, you want programming teams to be small, as with all major studio titles around, most of the developers working on a title are either Artists or Designers.

See while you can spin out more resources to make more people make more assets, the programming front, especially engineering, does not really get that benefit.

This is why entire technologies like the procedural planets technology, was just one CIG engineer that made the very core tech happen.

Did or did not Chris Robers say that they are gonna deliver SQ42 in 2015?
