MMOs have been around now for over twenty years. In that time the genre has influenced countless game play models and designs. You can say that MMOs really did grow up with the Internet itself. In the 2000s we saw a batch of MMOs hit success as World of Warcraft grew into a world power. Now in the 2010s games have morphed and the ideas of MMOs have changed, but more are coming and they begin with Fallout 76.

The most recent game-play I have seen makes it just look like a Fallout 4 BR. Really hoping this isn't the case.

No it does not , Maybe you should ask Bethesda what they are making , they are calling it a Multiplayer Survival game with modded private servers ..They will tell you what they are making if you want the Truth ........... or do you?

Sigh, it does continue the trend of not creating "MMOs" and going back to smaller Online Multiplayer Games (OMG!)

24 players per map does not a MMO make and we really need to leave off with the concept that these games incorporate some sort of features unique to MMORPGs like WOW, EQ, or DAOC.

My guess is at least 80% of the features in WOW can be found in either other OMG!s or even single player games.

What sets WOW apart the most is it's first two letters, Massively Multiplayer with no other qualifier or feature necessary.

FO76, Destiny 2, GW1, Fortnite (ANET correctly calls it a CORP) are not MMOs, never were, never will be.

New World will likely be one of the first MMO survival games but I'm sure I'll be having debates with some over why it's not a MMORPG.

I'll be playing FO76 as I've never really played a smaller scale OMG, nor shooter so it should be interesting.

If this is the future, then it's time for me to find another hobby. Zero interest in FO76 and I love FO, but not like this. FO4 was a disappointment for me since it was more of a shooter with RPG elements.

my first survival game was Conan Exiles on PS4 this summer. everyone warned me that survival games are toxic players and broken. this was the case for Conan Exiles so i tried ARK on sale too and found even more toxic players (i mean really bad people) and lots of poop! Conan Exiles is a totally broken game, lag, bugs and fast decay rate on official servers. most official servers are dead.

with expectations low i fear F76 will be more of the same toxic players and massive bugs. sorry to say ill wait until it is out a year and on sale....

Fallout 76 does nothing revolutionary - I am puzzled why the author would even begin to think this as a game to herald a new era of MMOs - other than yet another article about Fallout 76.

    Weird.

When a game comes out to herald in a new era of MMOs - it will be something different than what's on the market in terms of gameplay.

Fallout 76 is a multiplayer Fallout 4 mod with best parts of Fallout 4 removed out of the game. F76 has a questionable future already.

Also ESO was not s massive success on PC initially - it actually had a lackluster launch - what saved the game was the console launch.

True what you said about ESO it was bad when it launched. In fact then as Wildstar came out in about the same time frame people were of the opinion that Wildstar was a better game but ESO improved a lot and the console release was a life saver.

I betaed ESO and avoided buying it but after it showed much improvement I bought it and found it much improved.

    a) you mean "herald" or "usher in". There is no "herald in" .
    b) no.

Yeah I have to agree with everyone else here. Not really interested in FO76. Sounded cool at first and then I learned more and more about it and really just completely shook my head. Its like they were on a right track and then just got scared to go all the way.

FO76 won't be a flop, but I don't think it will be an insane game changer.

To usher in or herald a new renaissance of MMORPGs it will take Oculus Rift with controllers coming down to $150 total, PCs with 1080Tis being about $500 total for entire rig, and a VRMMO. Then the trifecta will be complete because we will be back to a 1999 scenario where the entire ecosystem is something brand new, never seen before, never experienced before.

I don't believe that a sit down in front of a keyboard and mouse type of MMO, no matter how different, can usher in or herald a monumental shift in the way we saw for the launch of WoW in 2004 or Everquest in 1999.

I stand by WOW being a MODungeonCrawler MODC. The main world is nothing more than a lobby now. You log into the lobby, pick your level and instance in. It's more Diablo 3 than original Warcraft now.
Hence why so many are clamoring for Classic servers.

WOW declined long ago from being much of a MMORPG, saw that when I briefly returned for Cataclysm and most were leveling in dungeon instances despite an entirely revamped world.

Better to recall what WOW was from 2004 - 2006 before BC started down the road to decline.

Thank you MMORPG.com for continuing your saga to prove what ISN'T an MMO by calling it an MMO.

    Guess what Bethesda calls it...

"online multiplayer action role-playing video game"
An accurate, albeit somewhat wordy definition.

    OMARPG.

But far better than MMO which it just flat out isnt.

Erm, FO76 doesn't "begin" anything. It's a game like Conan Exiles or ARK. Just a different setting. There is nothing revoultionary or even evolutionary about it. And F076 is not an MMO ! Bethesda just tries to get it's piece from the multiplayer cake.

Sorry to say that, but this article definitely smells a little like click bait to advertise FO76. :(

I can't hardly call a 32 people per server game an MMO. may be this is just the new standard?

All this article does it point out how painfully obvious it is that the writer doesn't know wtf a MMO is.

I think I've finally figured it out: the writers here are suffering from a highly contagious mild stuttering condition. They're really trying to say MO but they just can't spit it out without saying M-MO.

This hasn't been the case since world quests were introduced with Legion. Between people leveling and doing world quests, the main world is always heavily populated and active.

This site needs to call everything a MMO to stay afloat since actual MMOs are in such an utterly craptastic state.
