Some of us become writers because we still believe the pen (or keyboard) is mightier than the sword. Sometimes we need to pull out that sword and put a demon down. This is one of those times. This particular demon makes World of Warcraft look like Town of Kittencare by casting is a shadow over the entire gaming industry and this writer isn't going to let it pass! (The ego!) On this day I, an old, uncool, niche gamer shall write about Fortnite.

Tried to get into it, the building just throws me off too much and it's seriously the meta. Also, last time I played, a 10ish year old child started to cry to me over the mic ( not faking ) because I wasn't using mine.

Not bashing younger people playing this game, just saying that has never happened to me before in my 20 years of gaming. It was very awkward.

Games that are popular and for the masses are really a turn off for me.....I'm not even interested in trying it.

Its just a phase. The only reason this game is getting so much attention is because of the ppl involved, not the actual game itself. Its just like people assuming WoW was at the 'top' cause it was actually good. Most of the reason why wow was at the top was because of how well marketed it was compared to its competition, this is no different. Ninja and celebrities giving him attention is what made Fornite 'good.'

First of all, great article! Thanks for writing this up. As a parent I enjoy watching my daughter play this game over all the other games out there. She has a blast building things and doing the silly dances. She laughs and smiles for an hour at all the silly things in that game. Her reaction is NOT singular. This reaction is felt by most playing this game. If it is a so called "phase" I hope it is one that lasts. As a gamer of almost 30 years, to me that is what gaming is, emotionally responding to a video game in multiple ways because of how much it draws you in. Everyone experiences that differently and with different genres, but Fortnite is no less impacting then any of the other great titles.

I am also thankful for Fortnite for finally breaking down the cross platform wall. Hopefully this means someday in the future I can finally play some games with my buddies on xbox or PC while I've got my ps4.

This game is a challenging and fun game. Silliness aside, have you tried building and shooting with in milli seconds of each other? It is not an easy thing to do. Not to mention the polished landscape and ability to group with people in this game. The game itself IS good, it just may not be your cup of tea. The good news is there are thousands of games coming out daily that you may relate to more. Go get em pal. Also, WoW was at the top because it pushed the boundaries of existing MMOs and added new elements no other company was doing. They didn't get it ALL right, but no game or company does. It was at the top and still is at the top because it is a good game. You can't take that way from them 14 years in and millions of players still engaged.

All in all, fortnite is successful and fun. As long as they keep doing right by the community and pushing the gaming boundaries than I am all for it. Anything that can put a smile on my daughter's face and give her some laughter is alright by me.

I applaud the cosmetic only cash shop and the building. But that's all I applaud, you have to take a game in the round and that's all this has going for it. Let me sum up the game in one word...childish.

Also I contend that this is somehow an evolution of the FPS, this is no more a FPS than Disneyland is a reflection of the real world. But gaming journalists as a profession seem to feel the need to show their political "awareness" and berate hyper-realistic shooters by applauding any alternative.

Does this now mean we could have a MMO funded by cosmetic purchase alone? No, because Fornite is a social phenomenon, which could not have achieved its success without social media, unfortunately that may be the way all gaming is headed. Streaming may become more important than actual reviews and indeed pieces like this, Twitter and Facebook more important than gaming websites (maybe it is already?).
Indeed one of our posters is very worried about the effect such a huge hit has on the rest of the gaming industry and has speculated that recent staff layoffs are due to there being only so much money to go round.

Well that's me, of now to have some quality time with my real life Fortnite buddies; need to get my seahorse floaty, bucket and spade and then its down to the beach and have some fun! ;)

Fortnite is just a much better approach of a pure full loot pvp MMO with no levels/no vertical progresion so much talked by some geeks here: just pop in a map and wander though it killing others and getting their loot, then leave when you're done with it for the day. There is no need to spend years and millions developing an MMO to do it.

That's because it isn't an RPG. That much really isn't up for debate.

It could, however, still potentially be a MMOTPS/MMOFPS, as could essentially any other battle royale. It depends on where one draws the line on minimum player count per map to define what is and is not a MMO. We do not have an industry-defined minimum player count per map/server right now, so 100 could very well fit some personal definitions.

This article was... different. There were so many dizzying circles and abrupt changes that I really don't have a clue what the author was trying to say except that he liked Fortnite.

One of my other passions besides gaming is hockey (and my team is the woeful Vancouver Canucks but that's another sad, very sad, story.) I follow the games and the flavor as well so I end up knowing a bit about the player's lives away from the rink.

And one of the things a huge portion of those players do to relax is play Fortnite. Some even stream it and their streams are linked in hockey subreddits. It has gotten to the point where stories have been written about how such and such a player has Fortnite "issues" and is tired at practice because instead of going out with his buddies drinking and carousing like all real hockey players are supposed to do (I think it's in their contract) they stay up til all hours of the night playing Fortnite.

    This thing is everywhere.

Thank god my younger daughter, the gamer, doesn't like it or shooters in general. Many of her friends play it, but she isn't interested. She would much rather play a fantasy based RPG or any game that has an actual story instead of mindless killing. When she feels like doing that we load up LFD2 and kill zombies for an hour.

It isn't a fps tho....the game is in third person...sounds nit picky but that ability to observe around you without being shot is a key difference.....every time you say fps in this article it makes me cringe

My biggest issue with Fortnite is simply what the change of focus to Battle Royale has done to the original game. Maybe I'm weird, but I actually enjoyed the Save The World stuff. I didn't mind when they announced the BR mode... but I have been totally disappointed that they lost sight of the original game concept. Obviously they made buckets of money with the switch, but from the eyes of a gamer that liked the original game... it's disappointing.

First off the writer is the one that refer to and indicates MMORPG in the article 6 times ..  Which i agree its not open for debate ...

       Now

We did not call CS and MMO over the past 20 years

We did not call Team Fortress an MMO over the last 20 years

We did not label Soldier of Fortune and MMO

We did not label Delta Force an MMO

We did not Unreal an MMO

we did not label Quake an MMO

                             etc etc etc.....

Epic does not label Fortnite an MMO

yet ........ we are here .........how odd

Its a FPS , and quite a good  one , and there is nothing wrong with that..

Nothing wrong with Fortnight. Someone just managed to teach an old dog (First Person Shooters) a new trick. Would I say the game is necessary? I'd say anything that moves the gaming genre forward is necessary. Now what isn't needed? Tons of asshole copy cat companies flooding the market their own half assed knockoffs.
Well technically Fortnite is the knockoff.

Fortnite has pushed the boundaries as far as crossplay goes. On PC I can play with anyone from switch to apple to android to ps4 to XBOX. Fortnite even basically forced Sony to enable cross play so now PS4 users can play with XBOX / Switch.
As far as the game itself I am not a fan of the shooting mechanics seems too much randomness goes on. On time I will hit someone for 8dmg w/ a shotgun next time its 100+. I also do not like the building, but I have won games without building.
Also fortnite has constant updates whether its new weapons or items or game modes etc etc. Usually there is some weekly update that introduces new things. So overall I feel EPIC does a great job with it.

500 per server....go with that figure.....a long accepted but somewhat forgotten standard. Personal definitions are irrelevant.
