Customer Throws Tantrum About Female Generals, Is Completely Wrong

MadFrenchieMadFrenchie Member LegendaryPosts: 8,505
edited September 2018 in General Gaming
So Total War Rome 2 is getting review bombed on Steam due to female generals being a feature.  The most popular negative review cited that half his Roman generals are now female, and the normal bitching you've come to expect in this day and age has started.

Interestingly enough, that review is completely false and straight up lies about the game to try and push its narrative of (and I cannot make this up) bitching about Creative Assembly pushing a narrative.  Here's the quote from an article regarding the data mined chance to get female generals:

"YouTuber RepublicOfPlay posted a video of his findings, pointing out that only certain cultures—Romans not among them—can even have women generals, and there’s a 65 per cent chance characters will be born male, and only a 35 per cent chance they’ll be female."

So man bitches about half his Roman generals being female in an attempt to push a narrative, datamining determines he's fabricating the essence of his claim in criticizing the game.  This is reality, and it's fucking pathetic.

EDIT- The review I mentioned:

"Why are suddenly half my ROMAN (known for being a predominantly patriarchal society) generals women? You know I wouldn't have a problem with that if I could disable and enable this "content" patch at will. But you just really want to forcefeed historical revisionism to your customers. Very disrespectful and generally not a good business practice (look what happened to EA).
Not to mention that this game is still buggy and badly optimized after all these years. It seems that CA has stopped caring about making actually good games like Medieval 2 and Shogun, and now are only looking to pander to an audience that THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO ATTAIN BECAUSE THAT AUDIENCE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HISTORICAL STRATEGY GAMES.
All this pandering comes at the cost of the established, core audience. Not to mention the whole Red Shell incident. So yeah, don't buy this game, or any CA games for that matter, until CA gets its act together and starts respecting its customers."

https://store.steampowered.com/app/214950/Total_War_ROME_II__Emperor_Edition/

To recap: The Roman faction in the game does not allow female generals.  At all.

EDIT2- PCGamer updated with statement from CA:

"
Creative Assembly has released a statement clarifying that spawn rates for female generals have not been changed, and the system is basically working as intended. "There have been no changes to recruitable female general spawn rates. But with the addition of the family tree feature and the new gameplay options it brings, playable factions may gain more female family members via marriage."

Spawn rates do differ by faction, however. They have a ten to 15 percent chance of spawning for most factions, bar "the Greek states, Rome, Carthage and some eastern factions, which have a 0% chance." Kush has a 50 percent chance. "This is to broadly represent the cultural differences in those factions during the time the game is set.""

Completely made up outrage over a conspiracy theory-lie.  Wonder where those folks are taking their cues from?

I mean, it looks like, to me at least, that you are quoting a disturbed person unworthy of discussion. Is the reason that you are quoting this person based on the fact that they are a very famous or popular person?

Edit: Just to be clear, I had not read the second edit when I wrote my reply. But still, I wonder at the review bombers sick motives.

They are unworthy of discussion.  Unfortunately, they've garnered enough buy-in from like-minded individuals to push the Steam reviews to "Overwhelmingly Negative" and trigger Steam's review bomb algorithm.

To be clear, there are issues that I think may be worthy of consumer ire, such as the Red Shell issue (though I don't know much about its implications on the surface), as consumers in general don't appreciate companies sneaking extra software onto their systems.  However, that's overshadowed by a made up debacle.  It's indicative of a large disconnect with reality we're seeing in society.  Not even our hobbies can avoid it.  It's not the first time gamers have injected gender politics into gaming merely to fabricate undue outrage.

It should be noted that Rome 2 is a pretty great game. I tend to like the creative assembly games in general, but Rome 2 is fundamentally one of their better versions in my opinion.

I agree with you about this societal shift we've been seeing. It has been very disturbing to me as well.

I found this while reading up on Rome 2 because the Total War games are experiences unlike any other with their real-time battles.  I'm thinking I might buy it this next weekend.  CA has damn near created its own strategy sub-genre imo.  Is there another current franchise utilizing such in-depth and large real-time battles?

Not on their scale. At least not that I know of.

For me the addiction started with Rome 1 which came out like a million years ago. Total War Warhammer is their new thing and it's pretty good. There is a lot of variety in comparison to other offerings (with the caveat that it is completely fantasy). Medievil 2 is really great. Shogun was good as well. They come out with these things every couple of years or so.

It takes a certain type of gamer to get into them. I will say that getting deep into them feels really epic - especially as you up the difficulty over time. Total War is a diamond in the rough IMO.

    First:

I don't think the original guy necessarily was deliberately lying(though, who knows).

This is more an example of an idiot who doesn't understand basic math and odds.  It just so happens this particular uneducated idiot also had an agenda(shocker, right? )

Even though the one guy started the nonsense, it's the other people who jumped on the bandwagon like mindless lemmings that are ridiculous.

The original guy's agenda was probably to attack CA, in general(no pun), due to all the DLC hate they've had lately.  He was just looking for an excuse to jump on a bandwagon himself.

Steam is such a joke at this point, anyway.  If they don't start changing things, I'll be surprised if anyone's even using it 5-10 years down the road.  Other platforms are springing up, and at the same time Steam has all but said they no longer care enough to even bother trying.

I'm sure CA hates Steam by now.  They get that review bombing on all their games.  They get as much hate as Star Citizen on there.

    Second, and most importantly:

CA games are awesome.  That's all.

I think that they deserve some amount of "DLC hate" personally. They are one of the most egregious development teams when it comes to the sheer volume of DLC. And it is, at least in my opinion, overpriced in most cases.

But watching a game get review bombed for som RNG system where people think there are too many female generals per capita is just plain stupid.

They could honestly probably release a title that's focused solely on the battles and it would be fun enough, standing on its own, so long as they got creative with units and unit abilities ala Warhammer.  The diplomacy and economic systems are added goodies that just make it that much better.

@Lokero, very much a possibility that he was getting female family members through marriage and was mistaking them for generals, but that's why it's best not to knee-jerk on a review bomb like that.  The DLC and Red Shell stuff are legit concerns, but none of that will be addressed in his review because he decided to lead with a completely asinine claim. :/

I disagree with your opinion very strongly.
Heres the thing about that ..

you can disagree with IMO all day , and IMO you would be wrong all day ... IMO that is ..

But lets get past that ..

Hegemony depicts and feels a much more realistic campaign with true supply lines / resources / work forces etc .. TW is a much easier game IMO
He was asking about real time battles, not the entire package. And Total War does the real time battles a million times better... IMO.
If the interest is ONLY a combat simulator ,i would lean to TW , But as we all know Supply Lines /Resources/Work Forces all have dramatic effect on Battles .. This is not opinion but fact
My comments were focused on how well CA does real-time battles.  Never heard of Hegemony, but the more the merrier in terms of large, real-time tactical battles!
Agreed Frenchie as you know , i always present other game options is all .. The more options the more fun ..

Both are good games .. but as i said ..IMO Hegemony delivers a more realistic conquest mechainics of said era...

But the irony of as a holder of SGAMY .. buy the TW , buy the entire series:)

The majority of the OP is merely quotes.  I formatted it so it would be easier to read, which contributes to its length.

Authenticity is a huge problem in games lately, take Battlefield V, people had a huge problem with having a cricket bat wielding female cyborg and a guy with a Katana being in the game. If people suspect there is an agenda being pushed on players, sometimes its very hard to see that as not being the case. :/

so one dude complaining about a history issue and authenticity in a game is review bombing? damn that game really is lacking review if only one review is enough to bomb it, or not that good for that matter

now I wonder why post it here and not on steam....

Go check the reviews if you like.  One review doesn't create Overwhelmingly Negative in Steam's system.  Gaming outlets are also reporting the review bombing, which I linked.  Not sure where you got the impression only one review was involved.
