Awesome SimCity 4 mods you should try for an amazing city builder experience

For those that still play SimCity 4, since its pretty much still the to-go-to for city builders...

I highly recommend checking those mods out. You will be amazed by what the mods do to make a much better game!

NAM (Network Addon Mod) especially is a 100% required mod. It overalls the traffic system, adds a lot of new roads/freeways and makes a huge change and a much better change to the game. Its most popular mod for SimCity 4

SPAM ((SimPeg Agricultural Mod) and I-RM (Industrial Revolution Mod) are both great as well for the former overhauling the farming industry (which farming doesn't work well late game in vanilla SimCity 4) and the latter making industry even better.

Sim Mars you will be amazed because it changes the entire game to a mars theme! 

Sim Mars never left beta 3, but from what I tested it out...it worked good enough. I didn't run into any problems or anything.

Personally I stopped using mars, because I like my game I have going on on a South America region. That and Sim Mars was mostly aesthetic changes, instead of actual gameplay changes. But, maybe some will like that kinda theme for a city builder.

The map is massive, I think one of the bigger game maps out there for SimCity 4. You won't believe your eyes when you see how big the map is! So much to build!

As a note, I don't use CAM (Colossus Addon Mod) because it requires a ton of additional lots (way too many for me) and also isn't compatible with some of the other mods in that list.

Barsoom pretty much overhauls "some" mars maps to a "green" map or used for terran/earth maps but with a sci-fi twist. Granted, I only had one map properly convert. Read the readme cause its kinda hard to setup. If you are good at modding its not too bad, but otherwise its kinda complicated. Do note, it includes Sim mars so you don't need to download that separately. 

On the other hand...for a map that works with Sim Mars terraform addon (its on MODDB sim mars page I linked under addons)...I am using...

it works great with the terraform addon, since you actively need to terraform to introduce water onto mars. But because of the map height (just high enough), nothing starts off green or with water. And goes great with barsoom mod. The map is also really large. I think its actually the largest mars map that is available.

    My thought is that if you want to talk about "Sim City" then a better title could be "Sim City great game w/great mods"

    And see if people are interested. Your titles seem very much akin to something the Enquirer would use.


    I should add that part of your issue is that your title doesn't mention the game. So I actually clicked on it thinking "skyrim/morrowind?"

    People are going to click on it, see a game they never had interest in playing and then leave.

    Well, I DID try to put more effort into this thread. Mostly cause for those who don't mind its age and like those kinda games and I can help them out with recommending them mods. Doesn't need too many mods to make it a lot better, some of the mods in this list are pretty game changing.

    But people don't click on anything (not nearly as much anyway) that is a normal thread/video/news article etc title

    SimCity hahaha.
    Cities Skylines are the best city building sim, SimCIty don't even come close.

    I added a couple more mods to try in the OP. They are both great if you want either a better Mars experience, or if you want a sci-fi city. Though barsoom mod is kinda complicated to install compared to other simcity 4 mods, so if not good at modding, may be quite a challenge.

    Here is my current city. Its most successful city I've had in regards to traffic, and has 51k people so far. Still a lot of space to build in, but I think it looks really nice. Been fun to build too :)

    Also as a note, the only thing different post-screenshot is I expanded the freeway to the west (though not all the way since its pretty expensive). That solved a lot of congestion issues in that area, though had to demolish a pretty sizable district so the freeway could continue.

    I actually didn't mean to block that freeway from that direction as I always planned to continue it in that direction. But I fixed it and I'll have to remember not to do that again lol. Lost 2k people since that was pretty crowded area, but I rebuilt the housing district next to the expanded freeway and got the population back.
