Bethesda and Miracle of Sound have released another piece of music coming in Fallout 76. This toe-tapper is by Miracle of Sound and is called "Starting Over". It features footage from the game and from some of the animated videos the team has released. It's perfectly suited to its theme too. Check it out and get them toes a-tappin'!

Urgh, I don't like it. It's too modern and chirpy. It's like a children's song. I can imagine some middle aged children's TV presenters sat around a campfire with a guitar singing this and trying to act like it's cool for the kids.

Is it actually official though? Beth might have linked it but did they commission it? MoS do this kind of thing all the time.

Well.... I LOVED it! It fit the theme perfectly and I think the tune was quite catchy!

Note: I still won't be playing this game due to the PvP involved but I can still enjoy the games soundtrack.

It's actually very fitting given how these fallout games seems to present an idealized vision of "the world of tomorrow" and yet the reality is so different.

It also sounds more 1960's folk than "modern."

It is sixties folk Americana. It's awkward and doesn't fit. Folk Americana just doesn't conjure those images. That's the style that fits with travelling the lonesome road down Route 66 in its glory days, not post apoc.

It's too dang chirpy. The world just got nuked. Everything is destroyed. There isn't anything chirpy left, except this damn song.

Pre-nuke Fallout is a parody of Fifties modernism, but the entire theme in the games is always rather dark. There was nothing chirpy about New Vegas or Fallout 3.

American folk could have a place in the game on a radio station or something (like the NV radio) but I think it doesn't represent the game well as a theme. So when I watched the video it felt awkward.

I think they should take cues from Irrational/2K Boston and the Bioshock series about how to match musical themes with retro futurism and dystopia.
I remember seeing the original Bioshock trailer with Bobby Darin's "Under the Sea" playing.  It gave the trailer an awesome feel.

Fallout's music usually works because what you're hearing is the complete opposite of what you are seeing.

This new marketing and style isn't working for me because they've brought the propaganda that was supposed to have been created before the end of the war into the post-war setting. None of it was supposed to have been created after the fallout before this.

It was supposed to be clueless remnants of the past and that's why it worked. It was a contradiction which made it kind of funny but deadly serious at the same time.

Fallout 76 is losing that serious take on a post apocalypse and starting to look like a silly romp through something that looks like Fallout. It's acting like people are just as dumb and naive as they were before the bombs fell and think having to rebuild is one big party.

I hope it's just marketing and the game isn't the same. Or.. it's all intentional and it's chirpy until you actually get out there and then get slammed with the realism.

Good post. I was thinking about this, why the Under the Sea worked in Bioshock and this doesn't. I think it's because dystopian fiction is like a living irony that's unsettling and twisted. It's meant to expose "the lie" in an awkward and uncomfortable manner. It should provoke feelings of regret and sadness for the lost potential and vile corruption that took its place.

This would have worked if the video images were unsettling, a little disturbing, and created a dissonance with the music. Or, if they had chosen dark gritty music to contrast the Pip Boy images.
Yeah I suppose that is a good point. The images could have been unsettling or built to more unsettling.

Yea, the Bioshock trailer worked because of the juxtaposition of Bobby's feel-good tune with the images of violence and depravity being shown in the trailer.  The song also held a direct connection to the game because the entire thing took place "Under the Sea." It was a perfect fit of contrast to really drive home the irony of a utopia gone awry.

It just doesn't sound right for a Fallout song. At least for me. And I played all Fallout games since III.
