It's hard to believe, but it has been a decade since the release of the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King cinematic trailer, "Arthas". The news came via Neal Acree's Twitter where he wrote, "Almost missed the fact that the Arthas, My Son cinematic was released 10 years ago last week. Still one of my favorites. Did you know that we originally recorded a male tenor for the main melody before opting to use a boy soprano?"

Still my favorite expansion. Nothing Blizzard has released since has been able to top it.

It was my favorite expansion too. I just wished at the time that they didn't have to butcher the vanilla content. I remember leveling up a blood elf paladin and wanting to puke over how easy Razor Fen Kraul became.

We had a group of 4 and the highest level toon was a level 21 pally. We face rolled that dungeon and it left a real shitty taste in my mouth. Ruined a lot of enjoyment of the game for me.

Why did you have to destroy all that content Blizz? Why couldn't you have just added a fast forward button for those who didn't want to level their alts.

I personally quit the game because of the butchered and nerfed leveling experience.

When i was very young i was fooled by NON gameplay marketing videos,i bought many games just because of the videos but by time Wow rolled around that no longer worked on me.
So now i just watch videos because liek many ,we like watching them,i wil critique what i see as far as effort.

This one is slightly above average, nothing special, like the scene where we just see a leg is kind of cheap. The opening is just a still shot with some smoke animation, nothing skillful or exotic sort of subpar.
The video got much better but they did stick with the simple color scheme to make sure it worked when showing tons of the characters below the dragon.
Looking back for that time era,it's ok i guess, nothing amazing.

In terms of cinematography the trailer is a masterpiece and it was an excellent piece of fan service for anyone who had played Warcraft 3, who recognised him instantly when they debuted it. Hence the still opening shot; it was to show him off. Plus, he's on the frozen throne.. and looks frozen. Perfect.

It's often featured in top ten lists of the best game trailers ever. I guess anyone who doesn't see it's worth just doesn't have a good grasp on film as an art form.

Sadly, I was disappointed with how little the Lich King actually featured in the game itself.

It's all looking very Game of Thrones and The Night King though...

I wonder if the makers of the TV series sort of copied this... since The Night King isn't actually in the books (except as a legend).

One of the best trailers of all time in gaming history and by far the best expansion of WoW.

Yeah... People talked about it a lot when the season 7 final released.

Here is a side by side comparison,

Blizzard was just so much ahead of time that they copied GoT before it even released.

True reminded me GoT as well but even 10 years ago when I was actually playing this expac I thought that Blizzard actually copied Lord of the Rings as the Lich King looks very very alike to Sauron. Everytime I see this video I think of LOTR but now after watched GoT it does remind me that too.

:O I spent every night with him from 8-12pm 24 and 10 man heroics for nearly 8 months! Lol

I think my best memories of WoW was while wrath was a thing, probably due to several factors, such as the questing becoming soo much better compared to TBC and Vanilla - where as I also met some really good friends at the time.

And then of course, Arthas, Lich King, wrapping up that story was something I had been waiting for since Warcraft 3 - was kind of sad when it ended ;p

WotLK was a good expansion and had one of the best (imho) raids in WoW - TotGC. Ofc it did destroy and trivialize previous content like all WoW expansions do, but that was to be expected.

I still recall how I felt when I saw that cinematic for the first time and it still evokes the same feeling in my chest and goosebumps to erupt on my skin..... magnificent. Blizzard really knows their craft.

Still my favorite wow cinematic and expansion to date. Get goosebumps every time I watch it.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

I didn't raid back then. Most I saw of him was when I created a Death Knight and then sometimes as a cameo at the end of certain dungeons.

Come back for Classic.  All the great stuff Blizzard has stripped from the game will be there.
Oh I will be :) really looking forward to it.

I'm dabbling with BfA now, or I really should say Legion since my highest level toon is 107. I'm liking the new combat changes, I hated the changes they made at the end of WoD.

A lot of things going on right now (good things). Leaves me with little time for gaming at the moment. Fall should bring an improvement to my gaming time.

The last expansion that i played with all my hearts, the expansion where i lined up 3 hours just to get the physical box, when it's in my hand, i drove back and installed the expansion, and slept 5 hours a day for the whole month

an Expansion where i played for more than 2 years, every single god damn day for at least 8 hours.. the feeling of seeing 40++/60 guild members that were online during the same day because we all wanted to get to the max level asap, the expansion where we still saw so many active players, and an actual nice global chat.

you will be forever remembered, WOTLK, the 2 best expansion of WoW history including TBC

Great article. Never was a game exactly like it and will never be another. Lots of adventuring done in this MMO.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

The Burning Crusade is still my favorite expansion that I played, but I skipped over Wrath of the Lich King (which I now regret) and Cataclysm (which I don't regret).
Not a big fan of Warcraft? I cant imagine that any Warcraft fan would deliberately skip "the Lich King expansion".

Anyway, this is my favorite cinematic trailer and it was also my favorite Warcraft expansion. Great times.
I'm a huge fan of Warcraft, World of Warcraft in particular, but I played through Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 with the expansions.

Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm just hit during a time in my life when I was focused on other things.  My career, my son, and eventually my lady.  There wasn't enough room for WoW for several years.  My brother played the crap out of WotK, though, and he regularly tried (futility) to get me to join him.  Looking back, I really wish I had made the time because now our situations are reversed.  I have plenty of time for WoW, but he's busy fathering three children!  Oh well ... as they say hindsight is 20/20.  Hopefully the day will come when I'll be able to return to Azeroth with my little brother again.
This is kinda awesome, because my brother and I used to play together as well.  And as well, he is now fathering three little girls and only has time to play a round or two of games like Fortnite before he has to get back to being a dad.
