Edit: they do not really address the concerns regarding my.com but from their words apparently they have had lenghty discussions with them before trusting them. We shall see.
My.com raises some additional flags of concern almost immediately, which is not too surprising.
However, I don't recall ever having issues playing games they published. So assuming the interview holds true, and they are indeed only responsible for non-ingame aspects (hosting the back-end infrastructure and support), then it should not be a problem.
Problems come in if they are able to influence game design and put in a cash shop.
While i think keeping my.com away from the game and just handling infrastructure is the best thing and cant deny that while i hate my.com, this could be not as bad as everyone things (seeing as everything they can get their hands on gets ruined).
I will be honest.. as much as i hate my.com even i have to see it objective (while my hatred burns in the background XD)
The MMOs they ruined, they all were allowed to adjust themselves and all were asian MMOs.. however this game is both western as well as my.com cannot touch it.
Just fully excluding my opinion on my.com and looking at ONLY server infrastructure and customer support.. then sadly i have to say they actually are suited for that. All the shitty games they took over had great connections and servers and the few times that i contacted their support they were friendly, quick and fixed everything up for my really quick.
So.... for now.. i will try to keep my mouth shut and my mind blank untill i see the endresults
AOC doesnt need plenty of marketing nor does it need a publisher because the mmo landscape is soooo dry that even a 2d web browser mmorpg gets noticed by almost everyone due to the lack of new mmos coming out. which means that AOC is already on everybodys radar just from 1 video on their combat. Understand your indutry well and you can make big $

I'd agree with you for everything you just said if you take "web browser" out! I've never seen a browser MMO that wasn't utter garbage.
I remember when I first heard about Ashes of Creation. The very first thing I heard was how they're tired of P2W MMOs, how they think it is a huge problem, how they're not going to follow this direction, etc...
And now they choose My.com as publishers, the company that is well known for P2W games... Seriously, just think about it... It is so freaking dumb... It makes no sense at all...
Yeah yeah, I heard they saying My.com is only going to handle infra stuff, but seriously, just think about it... What the fu?
That's a big "no" for me, this decision makes no sense at all. I had A LOT of problems with my.com in the past and I simply not trust anything they're part of. Simple. Good luck Ashes Of Creation, and good bye.
Great interview Gareth. Good questions and answers especially concerning engines. Jeffrey Bard is awesome. That guy has some rock solid answers, the kind that come from experience and understanding the beast you're wrangling.
I feel like EU players complain a lot. From my perspective (in the US) they complain a lot and do a lot of finger pointing, but not a lot of providing good answers or anything of help. In the other Ashes thread there were tons of responses from EU players voicing their disgust with my.com, but no one, not one person, had a good suggestion for an alternative publisher. It's been my practical experience with EU publishers that most are crap (like most of the NA pubs I have accounts with) and were much worse than what I experienced with my.com and Skyforge.
Anyway, my buy-in tier is for persistent alpha (that's phase 2 I think) so I'll get to form real opinions then.
Hey I'm EU and I don't complain :P If I had to choose a publisher, I would've chose my.com as well. And I am open to better suggestions.

nice interview, I checked out some of it that other day, and had the opportunity to finish up earlier. the only issue I see is them going with my.com - they don't always have the gunfortunately action unfortunately.
It has fallen to my attention that some people want to refund their pledges. If you are an EU citizen, then I have good news for you. If you are otherwise, then I am sorry I can't help you.
Under EU laws/regulations
Under EU rules, a trader must repair, replace, reduce the price or give you a refund if goods you bought turn out to be faulty or do not look or work as advertised.
If you bought a good or a service online or outside of a shop (by telephone, mail order, from a door-to-door salesperson), you also have the right to cancel and return your order within 14 days, for any reason and with no justification.
So, not only you can refund, without questions asked, anything you have bought the last 14 days, but also, you can refund anything and everything, on the basis that they advertised a self-published MMO, which now they will not self publish (at your area). On top of that, they advertised that their game will have no p2w, whereas the new publisher publishes only p2w games. As such, you are justified to not like/trust the new publisher.
A word of caution. Unless you have pledged directly from their site with the use of your credit card (e.g. you used kickstarter, paypal etc), then there is a layer between you and Intrepid. Although this will make the whole process of refunding more difficult, under EU law, all the aforementioned providers (kickstarter, Intrepid, paypal and anyone else) are obliged to refund you. Having to persuade all of them will be less easy than having your bank deal with Intrepid, but it is not impossible. Ask for you money back, and if you need help ask your bank to help you. You are their customer, you are an EU citizen and they are obliged to help you
If NA companies want our Euro, then they have to follow EU laws and regulations.
Best of luck to you all.
PS1
I'd encourage people to save information (such as videos) at which Sharif explicitly says/mentions that they will self-publish and that there will be no p2w. These are the evidence you will require in order to make your case. It is likely that they (Intrepid) will try to remove all relevant information in order for you not to be able to fight them.
PS2
If you are so kind, please spread the word to those who are in the same predicament as you.

Do you know for sure there is any evidence in existence where they promised to self publish? I don't recall that actually being promised.
Also, can you provide a legally accepted definition of P2W?
Finally, the only way NA based developers really have to fear EU court decisions is if they actually care to sell there.
Even then, almost impossible to stop a totally on line enterprise from selling anywhere they wish.
So good luck with your refund requests, ask the folks in SC or SotA how well that is working out for them once enough time has passed.
