A good friend of mine is presently playing this free open beta MMO. She is both a parent and a grandparent (okay, so the latter presumes the former...gimme a break ). When, in the process of playing the game, she encountered some, ah, harsh language, she filed a complaint with the appropriate personage. NOTE: This was not language from fellow players...this was language from the game itself--NPCs and the like. We're talking the four-lettered "f-word" variety. Here's the response she got back, cut-and-pasted direct from the e-mail itself; all that's been edited is information identifying my friend. Enjoy.
Dear [edited]
>To Whom it may concern, Last night as I was playing
>Eternal Lands approximately 2:30 am (EST), I had
right >clicked something in my bag and got a message
from >the server telling me that "are you trying to
crash >the F----ing server!" or similar to that remark
but >positively obscene language.
That message that you had seen is not normally shown
to the players, except in some rare circumstance when
invalid data is sent. Apparently sometimes lag can
cause such issues.
>I was very upset that this would come from the makers
>of the game. I looked on the "Rules" of the game and
>it states to 1) Use appropriate language and 3) Be
>respectful of others.
The rules are for the players, not for the developers.
This should come as no surprise, since such a double
standard attitude is quite common in politics. For
example, our great president is considered a mass
murderer, even tho he killed far more people than any
American ever did.
>This kind of language coming from the makers of the
>game is totally offensive.
It might be offensive to you, but for many other
people it isn't. I personally enjoy it.
>There are MANY children playing and if this type of
>language is used, there should be a rating on it.
No, there shouldn't. Game ratings are not mandatory,
therfore we had chosen not to get our game rated.
As far as children playing, I do not see the problem
here. Are there any studies indicating that children
who hear or see the word "fuck" are negatively
impacted by it?
>I was also very disappointed to go on a quest and see
>the blacksmith in Morcraven Marsh also use very
>inappropriate language.
Which exact line offended you?
>If you are stating that the rules for the players
>should be appropriate, then it should also be the
same >for the people making the game.
No, this would be unresonable.
>I am going to continue forwarding this e-mail to the
>appropriate people until this disrespect is
>discontinued.
Or you can stop playing the game.
Nevertheless, I was wondering, if you have time to
write an e-mail for such a small issue, did you ever
write an e-mail to your state representative asking
for Bush to be impeached, or for him to be deffered to
an international court of law so he can be tried as a
war criminal?
All the best,
Radu
Which is worse: ignorance or apathy? Who knows?! Who cares?!
I did do some checking, and he's right; ratings from the ESRB are optional.
I can't recall seeing any games out there that don't have it, however. At least...not any that are making money (hint hint).
This exchange says absolutely nothing about the game (well, sort of), but LOADS about customer service.
Caveat Emptor.

holy SHIT i didnt think a admin could reply in such a way, usually ull just think they are goody tooshoes who do there job wihtout fail. whoa...i needa tell someone about this lol.
u can just tell that admin is against bush btw lol
anyway yea this should not be a game kids/teen should play, not with that kind of admin/GM in charge anyway. next time u report about ur character being stuck or something, he might tell u to fck off lol
That Admin/GM reminds me of the people behind Tantra Online (PH). I don't think I would want to step a foot in a game run by people who are like that.
I suggest you spread the word about that. With a GM like that, they need bad rep.

RISING DRAGOON ~AION US ONLINE LEGION for Elyos
You (or your friend) is being extremely melodramatic. Stop sniffing your own farts, and quit the game and find a new mmorpg to play. Eternal lands isnt exactly the most unique game out there =.
Its really sad that people take every possible situation and get offended and overract as much as possible.
Its even worse that you came here and posted it, trying to get other people to stop playing a game that they might enjoy.
Loser...
Ps dont pull the usual THINK OF THE CHILDREN into this, its just lame. You are only thinking of yourself, stop trying to make it seem otherwise.
well first off this game sucks if it was 10 years ago, today..i don't understand why people even would play it.
i think it's funny though, you could tell a dev like 'hey im stuck' and he responds ' did you vote for bush?'
Totally unprofessional response, and the whole "i hate Bush" stuff is hilarious in its complete irrelevance to the problem posed by your friend. Seems to me this GM needs to be canned and then punched in the face. I'll volunteer to perform the latter but it is up to your friend to get the business people of Eternal Lands to do the former.
As to the problem of seeing the "f* you" message in the game I have a mixed reaction. First all the whole hidden messages often containing explitives is actually fairly common. Usually they are meant to be seen only by the developers during debug sessions and are taken out when a game goes commercial (or kept in if they are hidden well enough and then they just get written off as "easter eggs"). If the GM is really speaking for the devs and they don't mind losing some business then he is right in giving your friend the old "if she doesn't like it leave" argument. However I have a feeling that this particular GM who responded to the email is just an ass and is not speaking for the devs, he just has some kind of axe to grind as shown by his bringing the president into his other arguments which are completely invalid.
Why does it hurt when I pee?
Okay, for starters, I don't play this game myself. My friend's daughter & grandson were playing it, and got her into it. I've seen the graphics, and had the gameplay described to me...no thanks. I've got City of Heroes/Villains and World of Warcraft...graduated from SWG (refugee, TYVM), EVE, DAoC, etc etc...anyway. So no, this isn't a game for me--but obviously it IS for some people, and to those people: More power to ya. I wouldn't recommend it, but hey, it's free...what the hell, right?
My concern isn't even about "THE CHILDREN", even though that is a valid concern. Fact of the matter is, children need not be exposed to that kind of language. Period. That was my friend's point as well.
Am I thinking of myself? Unlikely...I'm hardly bringing attention to myself with this. What I *am* bringing attention to is the exceptional lack of regard (and moderate lack of sanity) expressed in the GM's response. The "What are you trying to do, crash the f***ing servers?!?" message is amusing to me...given that I am 30 years old and a devotee of Monty Python, Denis Leary and the Daily Show. Would I want to see it regularly used in a game that can be (and is) accessed by children? Absolutely not. I regularly report individuals in CoH/V for using that kind of language on the Broadcast channel (not to mention the unimaginative ones who sneak it into their names...but that's another post).
I conclusion, I'd like to mention that I've worked really really hard to keep from flaming...trying to keep this above-board, as it were. But I simply can't pass up..."Eternal lands isnt exactly the most unique game out there =." What would YOU define as a unique MMO? Only one I see on the horizon is SEED, and well...
lol they remind me of the devs of Myth War. Biggest bunch of children/whiner/flamer devs you've ever seen in your life.
I, frankly, don't care what a game says as long as it's fun. The attitude from the devs was pretty pathetic, but the foul language isn't much of a problem. I always laugh at the people who are like "You can't hear a bad word in your life until you hit 18, I'm going to shelter you from society" then people go out into the world and are completely naive... but thats just me.
Anyways, funny to read, sad that devs are like that. Don't worry, not everyone is that bad
The "f" word being said by NPC's doesn't bother me as much as it does others.
The thing I find to be stupid is that the developers of the game are talking politics when they should be addressing the issues of their customers. The developer or whoever that replied to you obviously has a thing for George Bush and his government, just ignore his stupidity and cancel your subscription. Doing this will show them alot more then emailing their retarded staff, no money = no game.

Do not hate it, but instead embrace the diversity.
Okay this article definitly deserves a response.
The GM, administrator, developer, or whoever had sent your friend that email has been completly unproffessional, disrespectful, and an outright moron. It comes to show what some of these free games are like...trash. You have to sort out the diamonds in the sand. This one, my MMO fellow friend, is definitly sand. Bad sand.
Saying the f word or any other curse in game is definitly setting a double standard when they have the rules saying "No use of foul language" on the front page. I agree with you 100%, kids do play that game and they shouldnt be exposed to it. This is either a bug that they did not sort out, or just a stupid act of a developer for some amusement. Regardless of what it actually is, it is bad customer service and bad reputation for the game. They deserve to lose rep for this and I personally have no mercy for them. You dont see companies saying the responses that this person gave to you. Do you see it in the stores? no. Do you see it in service areas? No. Making abstract references to Bush? Gives me even more evidence to show this guy up as a complete moron. Like the saying goes, "the customer is always right." My advice to your friend: stop playing the game and shove it.
Sincerely,
Dr. Steelarm

I will definitely never play or support this game in any way. Personally I think Bush should fry them in the electric chair.
It's a free game so they act unprofessional. I've seen better GM's on Lineage 2 black market servers. At least they keep harsh language and there politics to them selfs. Actually they enforce players language too.
