Hmmm... if you really want to know anything about AO go to the offical forums off of http://www.anarchy-online.com and ask there most of these people posting here are morons.. noticed I said most not all... whoever comes into a game specific forum to flame the game is quite indeed a f**king moron. The purpose of it is to promote the game and help others learn about the game not your reasoning for not liking it or lack thereof. But really dont ask questions here go to the AO offical site and browse the forum there and ask questions... the community is really nice and helpful there.

A successfull MMORPG is one that turns a profit. EQ cost 5 million to develope. In 6 months after release it had 50,000 subscribers. It broke even in 2 years when it kept a solid 100,000 subscribers paying their monthly fees which finally covered the 5 million it took to develope, as well as all over head costs. And on top of all that, turn a profit.
One of the most well known MMORPG developers said the avarage and intended shelf life of a MMORPG is 5 years.
To tell if a MMORPG is a success, it must break even aka have a solid 100,000 subscribers during the first 1-2 years after release. This tells a new player that the game is stable, and will be around after they invest time into their character.
This is the definition of a good MMORPG. Not if it outsells EQ, DAoC, SWG, or AO.
[AC2 has 12,000 players. Is it a success? LOLOL ;) ][Compare that to AC which has an avg of 100,000 players. ;)

Good lord, man, do the math properly. 100,000 subscribers * $10/month = $1mil per month. Per month. A $5 million development schedule is paid in 5 months. Please review your figures, and you will understand what you are saying is fundamentally flawed.

You think companies would invest in a multi-million dollar project that *MIGHT* break even in 2 years? Please.

Bad devil, man, YOU do the math!

What else are you missing from the 'formula'. C'mon, don't think too hard.

The cost of the game box . It is what instantly injects $$$$ into the game developer's coffers.

The avg cost of a new MMORPG game box is roughly $50.oo at release. Ahhh... now you're starting to see the light. See now why that well known MMORPG game dev guy knows what he was talking about?

  •  BTW, the avg MMORPG takes years to make.

For example, SWG took 3 years to make. It's now at the 300k subscriber mark. It cost roughly 20 million to make. It's on track to break even in 2 years. And then turn a true profit.

Back to EQ. It cost 5 million to make. It took roughly 2 years to make. When it finally hit the 100k subscriber mark, it broke even PLUS was able to pay for the OVERHEAD.

5 million initial investment. aka the software, lead programmers, rest of programming team, office space, advertisment. This is during the 1st two years the game was being made.

EQ finally comes out. Now for the overhead costs. After EQ broke the 100k account mark, it made back the 5 million investment. But it must continuue to turn a true profit to pay the overhead costs. aka New Servers, new office space, new customer service reps, new and increasing bandwidth (EQ at first used soo much bandwidth, it shut down all internet use in the San Diego area for a while!), new personell - secrataries, techs, etc... Plus more advertising.

So even if your formula were right (which forgets to factor in the profits made from the game box) EQ is grossing 1 million per month with 100k accounts. Only SONY and Variant knows for sure how much EQ nets per month out of that 1 million gross. BUT it's enough to pay for the overhead costs, as well as turn out a true profit.

    ===================================================

EQ is really a unique story, because SONY really ended up paying a total of roughly 30 million for it heheh. Good 'ole Smeadly. Even with SONY actually paying roughly 30 million for EQ, they were able to make all 30 million back, plus enough true profits to invest 20 million into SWG, plus 10+ million for Planetside, plus 25 million for EQ2. That's roughly 80 million in net profits SONY easily made from EQ!

And you better believe SONY actually made more, because they wouldn't put ALL their net profits into the above games.

Is killing mandatory in AO ? I'm not into violence much....is there a lot of gore?

I played Everquest for about a year then checked out Dark Age of Camelot which imho was way better than EQ and lots more fun with its PVP. After 2 yrs of playing that I got bored and checked out AO and I have been hooked ever since.

The graphics are almost as good as DAOC but the game world is gigantic. The learning curve is very steep but well worth it. There are just so many options and things you can do that it counters the greatest enemy of all MMORPGS: boredom

I would LOVE to see actual figures on the numbers people are throwing around.  10 million dollars to make Planetside?  Man, I've been on a lot of projects, and I know for a fact a 10 million dollar budget for Planetside is seriously stretching the numbers.

I don't really care how much money is talked about and how much real profit a game makes.  AO is a decent game, one of the better ones out there.  The UI is a serious hurdle for people to get through.  The game play is pretty fun, but soon becomes convoluted with so many different things you can do, people just give up because they don't know which way to go.

Yes - unless you want to play doctor and heal other players wounds during battle. No, there isn't gore in AO - but lot's of bodies.

I just started this game and I enjoy it alot.  You can lvl fast and there are many things to do.  There is a little bit of lag but I don't mind it.  And there is killing if you want to lvl.

AO is the only MMORPG that i know that gives XPs for crafting. I was amazed when i tried it out. It is not enough to level quickly , but hey great for crafters!

  • flaerpflaerp Member Posts: 14

i dont get it.. ppl complaining on gfx and lag, have no problem what so ever with it, graphics looks great on my system and lag only occures on high populated areas and only when loading them..

Ok lets start from beggining...........EverQuest is so difficult and ALL players are high level. Dark Age of Camelot is cool, but just for a few time. So in  conclusion, yes, Anarchy Online is one of the best MMORPGs, you disagree? Then play your always boring MMORPG. You "think" AO is bad? then download the trial for godsick.

LoL go bother your friends and family, ignorant.

I'd have to agree with Diegofrgc and i am not even in AO, but seeing my friend play it and etc is just really pretty boss. And with all those movies poping it out it really seems to keep people drivin'. SWG thinks they can get by, by havn little four frame comics. And CoH seems to be breakin some mold into the story carrying ways by haveing free monthyl comics. Pretty wicked i think.

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

Is it that much better than Star Wars Galaxies?  I played AO when it first came out for a while and then quit.  I wish i Hung in there and will probably come back.  I did try EQ and didnt really like it in the begining.  I got SWG and didnt quit right away so Im still playing it and its kinda boring.  They leave it up to the communities to create events.  They put some gambling machines in the hotels which are cool.   do they have any casinos in AO?  Gives ya something exciting to do with your cash.  Anyway AO scores so high on this site im curious.  Is it really a lot better than SWG?  Thanks.

This post is intentionally written as to not make any sense what so ever. Thank You Very Much.

I have been playing AO for about 1 /12yrs ~Total~ thats becuse i had a 6 or 7 month period i was trying other game and left them to come Back (Shadowbane, SWG,Planetside) And i did waste a lot of money But i was not afriad of coming back to this game it has been a great Game to play ever since Notum wars booster pak came out "IMO" and i should have never left. Now that i am back i am not sure i will ever leave,(though WoW might be cool) Yeah SL has its bad side but it also has a lot of good things as well it is more of a EQ type of system up there but then agin if ya dont like it there is always RK.

i was thinking of playing AO but i was ondering if it is noob friendly. im not new to mmos by any mean but i just dont want to be the only one lvling and have to go though the game by myself for the most part

I think AO is pretty beginner friendly. Start up in jobe backyard and you will always run into other low levels. However, it seems that most beginner like to solo until they hit about level 30 (out of 220). But really you shouldn't have any problems teaming, especially if you pick the right profession. Other than that there is an xp-pool that keeps players levelling up FAST.

the whole thing seems a little bit daunting at first, but it all makes a lot of sense when you spend some time with it. Personally, I love this game ::::28::

Ok I have read every post here.  Now for my 2 cents worth.  AO is a fantastic game.  I have played for over 2 years, but I do have a problem with it.  Ever since SL came out it seems that no one spends time in the cities any more.  In rome blue there used to always be TONS of people around the basic store and finding a group was easy.  Now it sems all I hear is crickets :)  I realize that a lot of people are in the SL part of the game but for me SL has always seemed a bit contrived.  Unless you want to go to the temple or go to SL it has become hard to find a group any more.  For people like me who enjoyed the missions something went out of the game when SL came out.
