Fallout 76 News - The Fallout 76 forum has been updated with a brief post about the start of the first round of closed beta testing. According to the post, the first round of beta testers will be selected beginning in October. Anyone who pre-orders the game will be eligible for selection and, while the first event will be a small scale beta, the plan is to ramp up the number of players as FO76 heads to launch.

Does anyone know when are they planning to sell digital copies of this game? I removed my DVD drive as unnecessary about 5 years ago, and now suddenly Bethesda is selling only physical copies of their game :(

I don't believe that.  I tried to buy Fallout 4 on disc at release.  I wanted to buy locally and keep my money in the local economy.  I found that only 25% of the original complete game came on that disc.  So I bought it online for a 20% discount.

steam is usually a good bet once we get closer to release. Right now it is mostly about capturing brick and mortar stores and the crazy people who buy special editions... .. . I did not pre-order a CE... i promise...

    ... .. . Only a little.

This have been a good conversation

The short beta window worries me a bit. By the start of November they will do an open beta to build awareness for the game. The point of an open beta is to do final stress testing on the backside. The closed beta is where the real testing lies. When the closed beta starting sometime in October, it just makes me thinking they aren't really looking for testers at all. It is more of an early exposure of the game prior to release and then see how the player dynamics play out when veterans get access to a new round of mass players in the open beta. Seriously though I really question if the average closed beta tester will even get a month of test time in prior to the game being released.

I ordered the game directly from Bethesda. But for those players who will be in the beta test, the only way to access the game will be by digital download. The CDs won't be shipped until release day. Truth be told, I tested a number of games over the years and I recall one studio was up front about the production time needed for game CDs. That studio claimed it took a month to manufacture the CDs, other gaming materials, package them up, and then ship them in time for all their retailers. So assuming that production window still applies, the beta version will be the same version as being shipped to the retailers. If anything the beta version might even be a version or two ahead of the retail CD version depending on any critical issues discovered during open beta.

Ofcourse, these days even alpha access isnt free.
But also it means if you pre-order you have to work as beta tester... for free. And if there will be bugs after release, Bethesda is gonna blame those who pre-ordered. : b

Bethesda and buggy games pretty much go hand in hand.

Indeed, nowadays alpha access is usually the most expensive, lol

So they are going to start a small scale beta in October (that will ramp up)... for a game that releases in November? They must really have some faith in this project being ready to roll.

What could go wrong... Maybe the Sarcasm isn't fitting but since I've been gaming for far longer than I would like to admit. It just seems like at a minimum you would want 6 months of testing and by "testing" I don't mean in house QA testing.

For reference the first two projects I beta tested were on Quantum Link back in the 80's. (rabbit jack's casino (yes lol) and a game called Habitat that was a Lucas Arts thing on there).

"Beta access via Lootbox mechanics" !

Pre-order now for a chance to be selected for "beta testing"...

I guess this was inevitable, lol

Its going to be an early access quality launch, without being called early access.

Then they can charge full price......genius.

Being Bethesda they know players will be expecting lots of bugs, always true for them at launch.

They said at E3 that it wasn't for quality etc. They just want to test the multi-player mechanics with more people. It isn't a real beta. Feedback will not likely impact core design etc. Something like that anyway :)

I'll be waiting on the monetization model for this one. Any kind of loot box garbage and I'll take a pass. With ESO and Zenimax as the shining example, I don't have much faith in the business model for this title.

Their testing plan sounds good to me. I'd like to get a good idea, from others, what they're going to offer before I even think about jumping in. I have FO4 so I don't need another one of those. I have Conan Exiles and Dark & Light so I'm pretty flush on survival titles (don't need any more reskins of the exact same mechanics).
My guess is a blend of Conan Exiles and Fallout 4, but not a launch.

With a beta in October, my guess is that they are slapping a network interface onto FO4 and calling it good enough to start charging.  Which, sadly, is far better than other MMORPG projects will be delivering this year.
