For those who been waiting for a PVE focused SANDBOX MMORPG..

I guess one can argue if BDO is a sandbox or not. Its definitely not themepark, but has a lot of sandbox features and I'd say its more a sandbox than an open world MMO like ESO.

But...in any case...

BDO is making a lot of changes that are pissing off the (reddit) PvPers. The vast majority of PvPers are very angry, but the PVErs are for most part loving the changes. They are making a lot of changes that seem to heavily cater to PvErs than PvPers...especially with recent change of no pvp at all for 15 minutes during a world boss spawn.

Seeing that there are only very few PVE (non forced PvP) sandbox MMOs. This is great for me personally since I've been wanting a NEW (MODERN) PVE sandbox MMO for many years.

Before...there was Istaria (the MMO with a dragon)...but old as hell. Only MMO with a playable dragon though, which is neat...pretty advanced dragon mechanics even for its age

Asheron's Call but that is dead, and I guess emulators but super old...too outdated for me

Ultima Online...well okay this one keeps alive on the many private shards that add tons of custom content. Despite it being older than AC, 2d art ages better than old 3d art :P And the private shards do sorta make it feel "new" a bit

Ryzom, but its dead...very dead...most dead MMO I ever played. Even the tutorial island when I tried it last year was dead...how is this still alive?

And Entropia Universe, which is the only modern PVE sandbox MMO that sees any success. It has optional PvP for those that want it.

So...for sandbox MMO fans, there is only one PVE sandbox MMO worth playing...Entropia

But, its very quickly looking that BDO is going heavily toward either very casual pvp, or/and heavily cater to PVErs. So keep an eye on BDO and see how angry the PvPers are, and if you are a PVE fan, it may very well be worth playing BDO.

Its looking like finally a 2nd sandbox MMO choice for PVE fans, when we only had one MODERN choice of Entropia (though that has been out quite a while, the graphics still look pretty damn good though)...that was literally the only choice for PVE fans that didn't want to play a typical themepark or themepark-esque open world MMO lol. Or play an old out of date MMO, and UO is best for that. Though I guess it depends if you see BDO as a sandbox or not.

Sandbox? Lol, not even close. With it's developer controlled auction house you can make a pretty good argument it's more theme park than WOW.

Fantastic, beautiful world in BDO, then grind and shallow facebook like mini-games. And more grind. More grind. And more grind. *shrug*

The absurd amount of money you have to pour in (as a new player) is not justified , even if the game was really good.. i remember playing it for 1 month and spent around 150$ + my electricity bill came up 3 times what i usually pay , soled the account soon after so i won't be tempted to reinstall it again and the stress of trying to progress / gear / pve wise was getting to me anyway.

I really enjoy playing BDO, but its not a sandbox, its a themepark game in that the things you do in the game are based on your level, there is a real path of progression throughout the game and you do out level areas very quickly. I think some people mistake it for a sandbox because the game has so many pve and none combat related activities, it is a pvp game after a fashion, but it also leans heavily towards pve though perhaps not to the same degree that games like WoW do. I don't have a problem with the games 'market' however, i think some measures are necessary if you are going to avoid having RMT'ers ruin the game with their inevitable death spiral of inflation, that it seems to be working as intended is enough of a validation for me. ;)

BDO is a terrible PVE experience and they cant fix it , i  played to lvl 55 and never died once fighting primarily red -purp mobs , lots of them dozens at a time and never died , never got close to dying..

      Its a joke

@Mikeha you sure have the subtlety of a hammer but I guess you made your point.

It won't make much difference because the definition of sandbox seems to be different depending on who were are talking to.

Being less thempark than a themepark MMO does not make you a sandbox.

As in all sandboxes, all you have to do is just move a layer of sand to find all the crap underneath.

Or would you like us to point out every game that Steam and its Ilk have labeled wrong or when PCgamer labels games like Warhammer as the savior of MMOgaming for ex..

For ex .. asking Steam to filter to RPGs brings us this wonderful list ... lmfao

And as far as PCgamer goes , i invested in them in 94 , one it was a good reputable mag , I sold those holdings in hmm  was 06 ,07  when it became very obvious they sold there ingretity to review games favorably , for the $

The same thing repeated doesn't make it true however. BDO is a good game but it is a themepark game, it does have some features that you often find in sandbox games, but only a few and at its heart it is still a level based themepark experience.
If you use the map function in BDO it clearly shows the level of the areas, this is the very definition of a themepark.  :p

Do what I do, treat BDO as a subscription MMO, buy pearls once a month for 15 dollars, if I don't afoard a specific item for that amount of pearls I wait another month.
I have never been bogged down or fallen behind other players by this.

Well the devs like most devs out there making mmorpg'sa seem to forget the very basic theme of what a mmorpg is.
Mmorpg's are NOT suppose to be some rush to get to non stop pvp maps,it is SUPPOSE to be a living world,an eco system, shops, skills, trades, you should feel like you are a real person moving about a real world.
Once a dev introduces pvp it changes the ENTIRE scope of the game from class design to maps to content to xp etc etc.
A simple way to explain this is think about ourselves in real life,we are NOT designed specifically for pvp,we are all just different people with different skillsets that are NOT dependent on how well we can do in pvp and devs just seem to miss this very basic idealism of life within a world.

Yes i understand that pvp like in the real world would happen but it simply does NOT work in a game and i just explained why,you have to change everything about the core rpg design to cater to "balancing" pvp.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Please do, it's good to know which publications have absolutely no clue what a sandbox MMORPG actually is, or...just shill what the developers pay them to say.

Clearly they are legion, thanks for pointing that out to everyone.

    ;)

Understandable why many modern gamers are so confused on what sandbox style MMORPGs really are with so many publications blatently lying to them.

and yes, I am the "judge of all things", it's just what I do best.

I'm one of the few that hasn't played this, but reading about it makes me wonder why anyone plays it...Ridiculously easy PVE? Whats the fun in that? 15 minutes of PVP free time by spending in the cash shop? Forget that...I'm stuill waiting for that good PVE sandbox game and this one doesn't sound like that at all.
