Fallout 76 - Garrett Fuller - Thoughts on E3 2018 So Far - MMORPG.com

Over the past two years E3 has come and gone with some big announcements, still it never shook gaming to its core. In 2018 everyone had predicted an E3 of battle royale clones. No one thought we would see story driven games again, but we got it wrong. Companies are betting on games fueled with narrative titles like: The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Cyberpunk 2077. The best news of all, the major announcement from E3, is an MMO set in Fallout.

I have to be honest, Nothing really blew me away at this E3. There was quite of few really cool looking games and of course everything Bethesda is putting out will be a day 1 buy but nothing that really got me HYPED. I can't think of one game this year that truly brought something unique to the table.

The last sentence of the article snippet. /Facepalm

I wanted to give a wide benefit of the doubt on this topic, but I'm starting to agree with @Nilden that this is starting to feel like a narrative being pushed here, not an objective assessment of the game's features.

Last sentence.  Yes, there will be plenty to play in 2019 -- those are the games that were at E3 2016.

I wanted to give a wide benefit of the doubt on this topic, but I'm starting to agree with @Nilden that this is starting to feel like a narrative being pushed here, not an objective assessment of the game's features.

I'll hold response until FO76 wins this site's Game of the Year award.  But it is certainly looking like there is an agenda here.

Agreed. The overall presentation was ok but nothing blew me away either. The only game that was an actual surprise for me was Ghost of Tsushima. Not enough was shown to really get me hyped but it was a nice surprise.

Overall more things actually got me worried. Still no clue what Anthem is supposed to be (seems to set itself apart more for what it doesn't have than for what it actually does have). Fallout 76 needs more clarification about its systems before I can decide whether it's a good move for Fallout. Cyberpunk looks more colorful than expected (GTA and Watch Dogs comes to mind). The design looked ok but was expecting more creativity from them, especially in regard to the freedom the genre offers (and yes, I know it's based on an IP). The rest was mostly about announcements or trailers and after so many flat out lies from various companies, CG trailers simply don't get me excited anymore.

I think Ghost of Tsushima is tbe only game that I cant wait to play, probably the Tenchu nostalgia but it is also 3rd person. Hearing that Cyberpunk 2077 is 1st person only kind of puts a damper on it for me.

BEST news is a Fallout game...hmm i hardly think so as i never thought previous was any good.
I am not going to get much excited or down on anything from an E3 advertising expo,i'll wait instead to see the actual full released games and real game play, not game play setup to look good for E3.
Cyberpunk does at least look interesting but yeah i'll wait and not o out and start buying anything and everything.

Honestly the only games I am hyped for are the Resident Evil 2 remake, Cyberpunk 2077, and Fallout 76. Nioh 2 maybe but thats pretty much it.

Oh wait My Friend Pedro actually looks kinda fun too.

If Nioh 2 is on your list surely From Software's new title is too?

My pros and cons for Fallout76

    Pros:

    1. Always online - i realize this will be a con for some but I love this
    2. Megaserver tech - again I am a fan of dedicated scalable server tech
    3. PvP - enough said
    4. Familiar IP and gameplay
    5. base building/destroying
    6. Being able to play with my friends

    Cons

    1. Its done in Fallout 4 - tons of reused assets from Fallout 4 looks like a F4 mod
    2. Looks dated already - I wish it had better visuals but this is a minor complaint
    3. No details on exactly which elements will be dynamic and persistent
    4. Need more actual gameplay footage
    5. After all these years of Fallout, not so hyped about power armor anymore - feels like I played the game already
Think I missed where the Fallout 76 is said to be running on megaserver tech. The tech is nice, but I don't know how that will play with their intent to allow player-operated and modded servers post-release.

EDIT: Oki so he doesn't call it megaservers, but he does say your character progression is server-agnostic which is more or less the function of megaservers (seamless transition of character data across servers for population and load distribution). Found that part of the video which I think I missed previously.

Not sure how they are meshing that with the player operated and modded servers later though, guess that's just going to be a hard division where megaserver player progression is not shared with player-run and modded servers, so they act standalone.

So many great looking games presented, but we don't know how they will play. I'm very concerned with the direction that Fallout has taken. Online multiplayer as they have presented it should have been a MODE to go along with a Singleplayer Mode.

I think Sony cemented for me that I would like to see a streamed show for E3 reveals more than a floor show, highlighting more game play than marketing pitches

Ghosts of Tshushima looks amazing though!

I was already hype for Beyond Good & Evil 2, Assassins Creed Odyssey and Anthem but what still got me excited is Satisfactory, Rapture Rejects (YES! Cyanide and Happiness!) SPIDER MAN and I am just so happy I own a Switch!

Maybe unpopular opinion but something else that needs to go is the pre-shows. Just get it all out in a couple of days, quit dragging it out. LETS GO!

Edit: So my phone left out the Fallout 76 part in the title so I was thinking this was an overall pov piece lmao sorry! Um FO76  looks great!.....

Triple samurai treat with sekiro, ghost of tsuhima and nioh 2.
Triple fps treat with metro, doom and wolfenstein
Capcom returning to devil may cry hopefully ignoring the dmc title.
Ori and the will of the wisps looking gorgeous.
Cyberpunk 2077, eh, i dont know, waiting for so long and not much shown. Bit of a disappointment.
Fuck GaaS with anthem, division 2 and fallout 76.

Yeah, but they are going to stick that label on it no matter what. Every single hype article shouts "It's an MMO!" It's not. It's a gankbox survival, low-pop server game.

Personally, I think mislabeling the game like this is never a good idea. It attracts players who expect an MMO, even a PvP oriented MMO, and that's not what they're getting. Which may boost their initial sales, but will raise the ire of those who were janked off. And that leads to an unhappy, pissed off player base, which they've already got, but only with SP fans and now they're going for a double-play.

It frankly reminds me of what Blizzard did with Diablo 3. Take a loved, successful single player IP, mix it with a long-term development cycle, add in FotM, and deliver something nobody wanted.

Same here, I couldn't stand FO 4. I felt like they removed all RPG elements from the previous games, and that UI was just horrid. I think I played it about 5 hours and I was done. I know that puts me in the minority (apparently) but when this "new" FO is being hyped and FO 4 is the reason, it doesn't exactly get me excited.

Thought E3 was meh this year. TLOU2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Skull & Bones, were the only games that held any interest for me.

I almost forgot, The Amazing Adventures of Captain Spirit which releases for free in a couple weeks looked good as well. I like Dontnod games and it's set in the Life is Strange universe and I loved that game, so I'm looking forward to it.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
