They don't have to remove the map to promote exploration. When there was not GPS people had to use maps when driving around. Just make a general map with no GPS/objective markers. Removing the map entirely would be more annoying than helpful. Being lost doesn't promote exploration either, it makes it easier to just uninstall.
Quick, quick, quick!!!! Gotta know where I am and no time to learn for myself, gotta run from point A to point B as fast as possible to complete my checklist and be done with this one...  run, run, run...

Maps that don't present your precise location on them don't produce the speed or convenience you suggest, especially if presented in a manner appropriate to a world with a low level of technology. There would be no quick, quick quick... run, run, run... about them.

you clearly didn't understand my post. I said, make a map with NO GPS and NO objectives. Nice try though.

Larger zones are what promotes exploration, but only as long as you have a good secondary transport system in place, not removing maps completely. In SWG the tools we had were a planetary map, overhead map, waypoints and compass and it was still fun to explore due to the sheer size of the 10 planets, which were about 100sq miles each.

There were lots of open world dungeons, caves and points of interest and it took a days just to find everything on your own since they were so spread out. Below is a fan overlay map of all the hidden points of interest. As you can see there was still plenty left for mappers to map even with an ingame map.

Before speeders and shuttles you had to walk everywhere, and yes even back then people complained about it because they found themselves spending most of their gameplay time just running aimlessly which is not fun for most people especially if you are paying money for the service. Once they added speeders you could cross one map in about 30 minutes where as running or walking took hours.

The way I see it is, if you want to get lost, do it on your own time, you don't need to cut out maps and pretend its some fun cool new feature. If your intention is to alienate most MMO players don't put a map in, pretty simple.

The thing is that humans ALWAYS map shit ... it's sort of our thing. It also makes no sense that maps won't exist in game when the first thing players will do is to externally create online resources or even addons that could do it.

The best course of action is to have something like CU is doing where cartography exists to some degree based on active exploration but would become less accurate over time anyway related to how dynamic the world is. The impact of this is larger in a game like CU where maps locations and who controls them can vary wildly.

I certainly agree though that the more that remains hidden and changing from maps benefits the game more than openly revealing every location eventually.

There is a huge difference between detailed maps provided by the game and player-made maps.

EQ has player made maps, and they are great.

What I don't want is automatic mapping that (a)shows everything with great big glowing markers for active quests and (b) I am unable to edit to add markers and details that I have uncovered and deem relevant to myself.
