'F*ck You Playing Cards' - A guy and his backers are scammed $6,829... but something rare happens!

TybostTybost Member UncommonPosts: 629
F*ck You Playing Cards is a Kickstarter scam project by Omar

Where to begin? Let's first discuss what is F*ck You Playing Cards?

F*ck You Playing Cards

A project made by Omar and 'friends' (Dennis/Hanson Chien) who helped him get his project on Kickstarter.

"OP: I personally found this project on KICKSCAMMED which is a site for people to write about KS that failed to deliver/scammed backers. It's always a good read... but this one in particular caught my eye."  So obviously it's important to publicly disclose that I'm not a backer of this project, and simply found this story interesting enough to write about it for MMORPG.com.

The below image should get you revved up to read more... The post on KICKSCAMMED is by Dennis Kim himself.

Dennis Kim released a video discussing the situation

Dennis in the video: "Now in hindsight I understand the stupidity of wanting to help him out. But like I said before he was a good friend, he was supportive, he was hard working, he just wanted to support his next semester of college. And so I'm at a loss, and so all 148 backers are at a loss."

Yikes... but read on! This story has a RARE ending.

This is the story of Dennis Kim... who walked into a scam trap along with the backers after his friend took the money, and ran... what is Dennis suppose to do now!? His bank account is linked to the Kickstarter, and he has direct access to the main account. He cannot sit and do nothing, that's for sure!

What is F*ck You Playing Cards?

F*ck You Deck features a funny custom made back design of the middle finger, with a high quality printing.

  • Printed By Hanson Chien Production Co. (HCPC)
  • Magic Finish
  • Thin Borders
  • Custom Back Design
  • Standard Faces and Court Cards Design

So... It's a set of playing cards with a 'interesting' design. Pretty basic stuff.

The Design

The main Idea behind the design was to incorporate it with magic to deal with hecklers or as a prank, But i realized that it can be also perfect for Cardistry because of its minimal design, and its scribbled shaped background.

Back Design

The back design got a minimal look which is perfect for both Magic and Cardistry. It's very funny and stylish!

A few months pass landing on January 8th, 2018 with an update informing backers that the prototype for the card was created with some minor setbacks (a promising update)

One month later on February 5th, 2018 all hell breaks loose with 3 new 'backer only' updates which the public learns more about in the 4th public post below.

February 7th a public post is made... apparently Omar told Dennis that he refunded $2800 back to backers.

Backers respond

February 13th, 14th, 19th (One week later) another barrage of backer only posts

Dennis apparently created the Kickstarter for Omar since he linked his bank account to it. Backers started to put in disputes and Dennis told them to stop since it started to affect him. The above posts may be locked but this public post sheds light on what might be mentioned in the above backer only posts.

February 20th - A new public post appears which has Dennis listing what he plans to do: TL:DR - He mentions that it may be his final update on Kickstarter because he plans to start a project of his own. Crowdfunding to return the money back to those who were scammed. It also sheds light on what Omar did with the money.

Backers respond to his idea on how to get their money back...

February 21st - another new public post that says the cards are being made.

Backers respond positively to this news.

April 6th - a final blog post public post 2 months later confirming that the cards are coming.

Backers respond with positivity in the public comments section

The Kickstarter page was updated with a new image and information

So there you have it! Dennis Kim walked into a scam trap along with the backers; and while he probably took a hit from his own pocket. The backers got the cards they pledged for! All thanks to Dennis's efforts to turn this negative experience around. Dennis (In my opinion) deserves kudo's for his efforts; and also deserves to have his story heard (which is why I took the time to post the events here on MMORPG.com)

Dennis Kim handled this entire 'stressful' situation that he fell into with grace and earned himself a new follower in the process.

Long post on your part... but I doubt many people will read past the following...

"He then told me a change of plans and to send him the payments directly."

Which is DING! DING! DING! an obvious clue that you're about to get screwed. All the following string alongs are moot. He walked backwards into it all the while spreading his cheeks.

Well , 148 people well deserved to be scammed it seems.

I really don't wanna hear any .. excuses such as "...but they wanted to help bring the project to life , man!!!" .

Idiocracy at his finest here and again, well deserved.

I just don't understand how people can keep falling for these same scams over and over again.  I mean seriously, don't give ANYONE your personal information.  EVER.

Unless, of course, you want to help my Nigerian prince friend.  Then by all means give me your bank account info so I can deposit some funds in it for you....... B)

I'm sorry @IceAge , usually I share your critical view of KS but it seems obvious you haven't even bothered to read this story.

    The tl;dr is:
After the scam happened people were pushing for chargebacks and the "owner" came up with dubious stories that he was scammed and that it felt unfair if he had to pay them back.

This story turned out to be true because in the end he and another guy shipped out the cards the KS was meant for.

So no one was scammed except for the guy in charge.

That Dennis Kim was a decent chap and in spite of being cheated himself he helped fix it. Thanks for that post gives you some hope about humanity after all.

I read everything and his messages were the saddest to read. When you realise you were trying to help and end up being scammed yourself. He should not have sent the money like that or linked his account.

Fair enough. Didn't read it all it seems, but that doesn't mean something fishy didn't happened. Maybe they have a bigger plan. Turn around things to get even more trusted, then launch another KS with an even bigger ...budget.

If anything, this story actually really showed just how much of a risk KS projects are in terms of scams.

I'm going to have to agree that as soon as "change in plans, send me money" was said, a red flag and bells and alarms SHOULD have went off.

That was the point when everything should have stopped.

He deleted the video which was posted since Feb 2nd, 2018 about a day after this thread was posted.

My intentions of the thread aren't to make Dennis Kim look or feel bad. I just wanted to share his story with the wider community (In the video he deleted; he requested for the story to be spread around as much as possible) and posted to KICKSCAMMED for all the public to read with deeper details. He likely found the thread and isn't liking the criticism's/opinions on how he should've handled things at a certain point; and other things mentioned in the thread.

    Welcome to MMORPG. Haha.

Regardless of all of the above from the beloved MMORPG.com community (and myself). On a final end note; he managed to deliver all the rewards to his backers and successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign under his belt. His name rises in a positive light (regardless of the above and outside criticisms/opinions) while Omar's plummets to a bottomless pit.

    Thanks for reading! :)

I'm happy the backers ended up getting something out it but honestly, the general public has no place in stuff like this. You're dealing with multiple personalities that have various backgrounds related to their money, all of which generally wanting the same thing in the end which is a finish project. There's nothing wrong with having "faith" in people, but people should also feel that assurances do not question your "faith" as much as they hold people accountable. People dont put money in the stock market and then feel they are entitled to the company's books just because they put in a dollar a share or something. Its getting old with this concept that "corporate is holding us back from forging the product the people truly desire since they have to answer to a board and executives." When you're dealing with "corporate" at least the chance of something materializing is almost guaranteed and if a plan that was in the works doesn't get completed, chances are people wont know about it until years later since the project steps weren't made into a public show like all these crowdfunded projects are. There's nothing wrong with having serious feedback like Suzie's WoW article was eluding to earlier today, but only "qualified" people should be involved, which people that just so happen to have money to throw at it are honestly not.

I totally read the whole thing. . which is strange because I usually don't.  He did say that the guy was a 'close' friend. . maybe the idea of close friends has changed . . with Facebook / snapchat etc.

Like you though I was surprised. . mostly by the "I linked my account . " since he was in Lebanon part.

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

The only thing I noticed is he said it was his friend who did this to him. Was this like an irl friend or a online friend.. Usually you kinda know someone before jumping into something like this with them. You should know which friend is trustworthy or not.. If they fall in the not category and you embark on this journey then you kind of get what you associate with really.

If you are going to give money to a Kickstarter named Fuck You...
... I mean... that’s kind of like naming your Kickstarter Greedmonger...
