Giving ESO Another Try Again

I will be tooling around solo late in the evening pve only.  What would you guys recommend as far as a good solo build that could deal with groups and good survival?  I like pulling groups and standing on their corpses afterwards, especially in a quest type game ;D

At low levels? A magicka Warden if you have access to Wardens: Elemental blockade (destro skill) + Winter's Revenge + Deep Fissure. That's 3 AOEs and you can have them all by level 6 or so.

Any other class can do good AOE eventually but the Warden can do it earlier and it takes forever to do that build with a Nightblade.

If you can't do a Warden do a magicka sorc instead: same Elemental blockade + Liquid lightning and the AOE pulse from the Volatile Familiar. Better than the Warden later on but you might need to be level 10-15 before you get liquid lightning... bonus: your own damage shield that protects you also does AOE damage.

My advice is don’t try to rush it, enjoy the journey.... make friends a long the way because the game can be quite complex and having knowledgable people to ask questions makes it a whole lot better.... i had pretty much benched it since original launch, i dropped in from time to time to see whats going on but always felt overwhelmed...

This time when i came back i joined the community discord, made some friends starting playing it properly and i’ve Been playing it basically daily for about a month now and having a blast, the exp event is helping to level my CP and I’m really enjoying myself!

So good luck in your adventuring - Magika Nightblade is pretty OP especially for soling content later on, but most classes have a decent solo build, like the petsorc I’m running on my main is also pretty solid!

I used to see people running around with a bunch of lightning killing things in a fraction of time that it took my DK.  I suspect that things aren't so balanced in PvE or PvP.

Templar is good for solo as well with a more reliable heal. Just remember not to take this game too seriously since its honestly not meant to be that way. Its really just a co-op story game with some minor ranking systems. Honestly everyone can get to the same "gear level" just at different paces, regardless of what you do in the game due to the upgrade system, so you're really not going to get that "Exclusive" so and so in most cases just cause you do a raid (called trial in ESO), most times it'll just be a higher grade tier of something you can get from an easier setting just lower grade (which again can be upgrade by collecting the mats).

I really like the way the world looks so I was just going to tool around and do the story missions, nothing serious.  I do have access to wardens.  I will give that a try.  The only bad thing with magicak builds is that I absolutely hate staff animations.  None of the other weapon animations bother me.  Running around with one drawn looks silly too.

I saw a magicak DK on youtube using a sword and a shield.  Can you do that and not gimp your character?  I was thinking if you are playing magicak you are stuck with a staff.

Always depends on the build and what items/enchants etc you're able to get. Its viable for sustain will probably be an issue if you dont have a staff at least for off hand as well as the staff ultimate being OP for several classes. In many high tier cases though, magicka ends up dual wielding (again depending on the build) with a staff off weapon due to DW's last passive. You can look up a guy named Deltia that has a lot of stamina/magic builds for each class. He usually gives a level progression build (like what skills you might want to work on as you level up in certain brackets and what to morph) and end game builds. Or you can use the skill advisor, completely up to you. Weapon choices usually come down to sustain in the end since your heavy attacks regenerate certain resources (destro and resto staves being the only ones that regen magic through heavy attacks while the others give stamina).

There are two different type of staff animations: the hold and release with fire and ice staves and the beam with lightning and resto staves. I'm not crazy about the hold and release but the channeled beam attacks feel fine to me.

If you want the best possible DPS with a magicka build, yes you're stuck with a staff. But if you're OK with less than the best try whatever you like. Just be aware that all other weapons that are not staves use stamina for their abilities. Hybrids are doable but they are tricky even for experienced players. New players trying to use stamina and magicka skills both will typically end up with a mess.

The way ESO works is that magicka builds are the default and stamina ones are like red-headed step children:
    • all class skills start as magicka and only some have a stamina morph available
    • Stamina sustain is just plain harder because you're using your stamina for your abilities AND for dodging, blocking, bashing and sprinting.

My advise to you is learn to like staves at least until you know your way around.

And yes Deltia as mentioned above used to have a great website with good builds but he left in a huff about a year ago and is only recently sort of back. In the meantime Alcast's site has become the go-to site for up to date builds although they do lean heavily toward end-game meta. You don't need to follow his builds to the letter but if you want to know what the end game trial running crowd is doing, that's the most reliable place to look:  https://alcasthq.com/

I don't like staff much either. Magicka DK is awesome, you won't be gimped. You just use the class abilities (volatile armor, burning talons, flame lash, burning embers, engulfing flames, stone fist) and pump up your magicka stat. Put some points into block cost reduction passive for the sword and board, hold down the block button and cast your dk abilities.

Stamina templar is a good choice if you like using swords. You will be able to do lots of damage with the weapon skills, and use the templar skill biting jabs for aoe damage, plus you have the nice heals. (btw: Same with stamina warden, very fun class).

Guys, some excellent advice here for new players, but are staff animations really the be all and end all of a class? If we are talking classes, its about how you do combat, how you look (some people only go for certain armour) and dare I mention it, is this the sort of roleplaying role you prefer to play? :)

Some people seem to obsess over animations. I don't really care as long as the fluidity of the combat fits my style and rotation.

To me some just feel more fluid than others so I naturally have my preferences. For example I like the speed of dual wield for my melee characters and absolutely hate the feel of 2HD swords. The bow feels fine to me and I have no problem with any kind of staff but the channeled bean staves do feel more natural when doing heavy attacks to regenerate magicka.

But for me it's all about the results and there is just no beating staves for magicka damage or healing. Hence my usual comment that if you want to do your best at magicka DPS or healing just learn to like staves.

As an aside for historical interest, there was a time when there was a loophole that allowed you to get better magicka DPS when wielding 2 swords - just swords not any other 2 DW weapons. But they nerfed that and buffed staves at the same time almost 2 years ago and it has been all staves for magicka DPS and healing performance since then.

I've tried it twice and to me the game is just clunky.....Finding your way around is a pain and combat is not fluid so enough for me but I wish you luck..

I've read many critics about ESO which were more or less legit and depending on point of view and opinion, but that's a mystery to me... or you have an old crappy computer and you try to play with maxed out settings.

It probably depends on what you compare it to, i wouldn't say ESO has the clunkiest combat as i've played games that are nowhere near as good in that respect, but if you compared it to a game like BDO, you might think it is, still, bit of a stretch even so. ;)

I think this falls under "subjective" or else just what one expects from combat.

While I don't like Elder Scrolls Online combat, I would never call it "not fluid". There must be some other criteria that he is using that falls under "Fluid" for him.

How can you tell such a thing? Compared to Blade, TERA, Vermintide etc...the combat SUCKS. Meanwhile, if you compare it to traditional of combat like SWTOR, WoW, etc...it SUCKS again! It's a very weird combat system.

It's in a really bad place tbh. Unless you're able not to compare it. /shrug

Combat sucking doesn't mean that combat isn't fluid.

I agree, combat sucks. But it's fluid. I think that's what he is addressing as well.

We are used of your little crusade against ESO, so this isn't really surprising.

    Some facts:
    - Just because you think something sucks doesn't mean it does suck.
    - Even if combat sucks, it still doesn't mean it's not fluid.

In MY opinion, ESO's combat crushes Tera's boring crap combat into hell and backwards. But I'm not camping the Tera forums to repeat it over and over again, because I respect the Tera players and the fact they enjoy a game I do not enjoy. And also because I have better things to do than to spew hate about a game I dislike...

What exactly were you expecting?  Maybe those were unreal to begin with. Regardless, all games have bugs/issues/problems.  Perspective is the one thats prioritized.  And that will more than likely be different between all of us.   Meaning perhaps your priorities of what makes a game good to you were not met by ES:O.  But that in and of itself doesn't make ES:O a bad game.
