    I think it's more about "just hold on the things that give us more money" and "that failed to achiev the sucess we aimed".

    They shut down MxM, they don't have intern competition for that. 

    I agree, it was about flagging numbers first and foremost. But they were launching two new MMOs that year, how many can one stable have before they are seen as competing with one another?

    They were still in the black when they decided to shut it down.  But they were making room for something that had a much higher roi.

    And cool things like knockback.  Ragdoll was nice when that was added.  All the cool powers.

    I had such fond memories of CoH/V. I remember all the friends that I made in the game, all the various character concepts that I was able to come up with, and the fun that came with it. I still think about all the good times that I had playing this game even as the years continue onward.

    Looking at the video from the OP reminded me of another video from years back that I had saw on YouTube:

    My best memories of City of Heroes were the people I met and grouped with. Random people that I met who had concepts for their characters and were serious about roleplaying. This provided so much content to roleplay.

    The groups that even after so many deaths with huge debt were willing to still complete the mission. I recall a task force that dwindled down to just three by the last boss but we finished even though it took us 30 -40 minutes to take the last boss down because we had insufficient DPS.

    I know it is dumb to say that players are not like that any more but I sincerely think people who play nowadays have changed about how they view games and back then it seemed people were more loyal even to total strangers. They were willing to take the debt and play to complete something they started.

    I don't remember it going free to play.
    I think it was about a year or so before it shut down, kind of like a last ditch effort to keep it going.

    Ah! Here it is from Wikipedia:

    Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

    Well I suppose there's some consolation as we have so much supers in TV and film now.

    As for the community, like that of most MMOs it got replaced by Twiiter, so a big win there. :(

    I don't remember it going free to play.
    It did for awhile before the closure. F2P characters could level to 50, but not access the Paragon system. I believe it was a last ditch effort by NCSoft to increase the level of profits from the game to a point where they could justify continued investment in it.

    If so, the subsequent closure of the game would suggest that the increase in revenue from the change in marketing model ultimately fell short of what was hoped for.

    Be that as it may, I still miss the game a great deal myself, but not to the point where it cripples my enjoyment of other titles. It is best to not let what one has lost in the past blind one to what can be found now, or in the future.
