First heard OPEN WORLD STAR WARS MMO and got excited...

The saw EA and got sad.

I'll never say never... but that really tempers my hopes.

It'll probably have some sort of Battle Royal mode.

Haven't seen any references to it being an mmo at all actually.

Yeah other than @Slapshot1188. It's why I asked.

Seeing that EA have so far managed to squander the IP if not drag it through the mud, i would lay higher odds on Disney pulling EA's licence to the IP. They (EA) would likely have to provide Disney with some fairly robust plans for a game to not have that happen. :/

I am not seeing how this will be a MMO! You will wait more for a "Legendary" mmorpg.com user then a clickbait title.

Oh well, now I know how people gets to Legendary status this days :)

A few years ago I came across a random dev tweet and blog talking about working on a new Star Wars online game. I shared what I read and most people here assumed it was the visceral star wars game as did I. Shortly after that they supposedly shuttered that studio so I was kind of confused as to what he might have been talking about. If I can find the tweet again I'll share it. Maybe they haven't given up on the project. Whatever it is most likely it's years away. If it is an MMO that would be great, if not then it better be epic like FF15.

Based on the announcement last October it sounds like it was always their intention to come back to it.

Here’s the most telling section of Söderlund’s announcement:

In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design.

It will have EA.  If it doesn't have loot boxes, it will only be because EA invented something worse than loot boxes to add to the game instead.

New SW:BF with an open world single player story lol.

This is probably the Visceral project that was first announced around 4 years ago. EA eventually shut down Visceral Games and decided to re-focus the project, which was previously a linear single player game. Seems like they're adding online features, but I haven't seen any mention of it being an mmo or mmo-related project. More on the Visceral shut-down http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/10/27/viscerals-star-wars-game-wasnt-canceled-because-it-was-single-player-says-ea-exec

EA's history over the course of the past 30 years or so says otherwise.  Rather, what they've learned is that most of the scandalous things that they've done aren't mistakes.

EA's business model is to cater toward people whose primarily choose which games to buy on the basis of nice-looking graphics that licensed some particular IP that they like.  Their assumption is that their customers don't care that much about the game being of good quality, nor of whether they get treated poorly or nickle and dimed for every last cent.  And they're largely right about that, because the gamers who don't fit that category aren't their customers to begin with.

A lot of game developers or publishers have a reputation to protect, and would consider a lot of the things that EA has done to be mistakes that would harm their reputation and drive away their loyal customers.  EA does not have such a positive reputation to protect, so adding one scandal on top of another doesn't harm it.

Disney's goal for the Star Wars IP is not to make people love the IP.  Their goal is to make money off of the IP.  So long as EA pays them a ton of money for the exclusive gaming use of the IP and doesn't screw things up badly enough to make people stop watching the movies, Disney will be happy with the deal.

EA wants all their game to have an online multiplayer functionality so expecting singleplayer game with multiplayer shoehorned into it.

Kudos to EA for scrapping the original linear and story-based game. I might gain back some of my lost faith on humanity (and game design), and even on EA.

"This sparked concerns about the future of triple-A single-player games. CEO Andrew Wilson denied that the moves were made because it was a single-player game that needed to become a live-service game."

It was all about that, we know they want the stream of income a live service game brings. Solo offline AAA is dead, how long before solo online is dead? They want you in an online game with other people, which can come in many forms just not solo. That way you have the Jones to keep up with, friends to impress, enemies to outdo.

That's why they create software that teams you up with a big spender to show you what he is buying, or makes a song and dance about the gun that just killed you, or show you loot boxes falling out of the sky and what's in them, or create a "skin economy".

The way we play our games, the gameplay, is being distorted beyond recognition to accommodate revenue streams, gambling in gaming and P2W. It is starkly obvious that we are being taken for a ride...on a no return trip cash train to a casino.

It won't be an MMO. This is just an open world game with online features. It sounds to me more like a Destiny type game. (Not really an MMO) Besides, would you WANT an EA MMO at this point? We already know every game they make going forward that they are going to build it in a manipulative way to milk your money. I mean, they literally have said that themselves. Solo offline AAA games are not dead btw, dunno what you are smoking. There are plenty of examples every year where that is not the case. Don't fall into EA's bullshit.

The craze right now is ridiculous and very obvious for anyone to see>>>ESPORTS.

the sad reality is only a small handful make money, the rest live in lala land.

All of these esport games are low budget therefor low risk if they don't sell.So put in a few months work and call it a game.
people seem obsessed with rankings and being put on some pedestal.Devs see this so cater to all those small gimmicks to lure in those gamer's and start rolling in the dough. Then ALL of these games, every last one of them cater a system that relates to play more than anyone else, have no job and you will attain those high rankings.

Know what i play for a fps ..UT99,it is a far more skilled game than OW.I couldn't care less about rankings or trying to make money or about their leagues,i play games as intended..for FUN,i don't need a ranking after i win or a pat on the back.
