Is it normal that all the Russian players got kicked out of the SOTA community?

Not being separated by server though, the game is only one server.
Yup as far as I can tell it is just for purchases and support which is the problem people are complaining about.  Imagine you are a english only speaker and all the sudden the english based company you supported told you that all your support must be done in another language and you can't use english at all and that even though the company still has a english support you will not be helped thru it.
Except people aren't being told they won't be helped.

This from the SotA community Mgr Berek,

"Thank you for posting your concern here! We apologize that the redirect has caused some confusion, and we're working to see how this can be resolved for all fringe cases.

If you have access to these forums, please feel free to post bug reports here. If you have access to sota-game.com, please use their website for all transactions and support needs where possible.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to still communicate with us via [email protected] and we will try to get you to the right place. "

They are also sending out this canned response to people who inquire,

"We would like to assure you that since Black Sun is our partner, we put our full trust in them to take care of your customer service needs. You will need to go through their store to make purchases and if you have account questions contact them directly, but you will still have access to our English-language forums. This will also have no affect on your in-game character as we are all on the same server."

It seems they are working with and thru Blacksun to see if they can manage the problem from their end.  Might take some time to sort it all out.

It took them one locked announcement in English to tell everyone they'd be forced into a new community.  Shortly after kicking the target players out they created language specific forums for everyone left.  But now they're helping people they are pleasantly referring to as fringe cases.

This isn't a social or racial segregation experiment, unless of course that it could be.  Garriott is eccentric in that way.  To the point, have you been following this in the forums?   The services they've been forced into have changed the user agreement and now have access to all their personal data, everything that was contained on the American servers, when it was transferred now it seems it all falls under rules and laws of Russian Federation.  These people that are angry are from member nations of the EU as well as other states that do not want to be subject to a user agreement in Russia.

If it was easy for Portalarium to fix, then why don't they fix it as fast as they broke it?  Just make a new policy that retracts the old one and be done with it.

Unlikely.  When it was discovered that Blacksun was using the Shroud of the Avatar brand to partner with a blockchain startup for their Shroud community, Portalarium said Blacksun was free to do whatever they wanted in their region.  After that they deleted, locked and ignored until people just shut up about it.  They're doing the same thing now.

well, there is a new GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) about to be effected due May 25, 2018 in the EU - and possibly US?- that is complicating things and is rendering companies liable for huge damages in case of violation. Perhaps this has something to do with it. I believe Russia isn't signing it.

I'm not really seeing the relationship between the two situations.

In this one players are being denied access, at risk of data privacy issues,  etc, in the other what did the customers lose, risk etc?

Fairly certain they won't be ignoring it, and there is a long running and I believe still open thread on this particular issue.

Don't let yourself get fooled by how they run their forums.  What they're doing is a well documented tactic in the forums.  Let a thread run until it either rolls off topic or generates too many questions.  Go to any forum in the Shroud forums and all of the most viewed topics are locked, most are locked without a reason given.

Clearly you're not from one of the affected countries.
No.. But as i said, SoE did the same some years back and shipped all the EU customers over to Pro7sat and it was the same procedure as this.

    So... Your point is...?

This have been a good conversation

At this point this game can't afford to exclude botters and hackers, let alone legitimate users.

Pro7Sat didn't force you to use any services in Russian.

Switching providers is something we have to accept. If nothing else, companies get sold, bought and merged all the time, so that we can never know whether an US company this year becomes Chinese company next year.

But not providing everything in English is unacceptable.

Maybe they should have provided that before forcing non russian speaking players out of the community they prefer?

How can Black Sun stop other countries from blocking doing business in their respective country?  As in some of the countries being pushed into this group do not allow business across the Russian border when dealing with banking. That is a huge issue, saying that just because someone lives near an area (but a totally different country by the way) they have to deal with a person that doesn't speak their language or one of the languages they speak, accept money for said country, etc...

I think it is a good move, When Funcom Merged all the servers from all regions, the game died  even further. Tyranny had about 4000 + NA/EU players, but once the Eastern Europe was merged, that changed to about 10 NA / EU players.

Russian gamers are notorious for cheating in every game they've gotten their hands on , and setting up shop /websites to sell hack tools. Those types of tools destroyed age of conan to the point of oblivion

I give SOTA team an A+ for this move
They didn't move Russian players into Russian servers, they are forcing non-Russians to do business with a Russian company.  Everyone plays on the same servers.  This is support and store issues, where people can't access or buy things.  Do some research before posting racial crap like that.

For one, Blacksun can make arrangements to collect the money in another country or through another entity.

Not all trade with Russia has been restricted, a significant minority in Latvia are Russian, speak Russian and likely trade with Russia.  Russia ships significant cargo through Latvia, and right now it seems the banking system is in a state of crisis, complicating things.

This article provides some interesting insight on the EU sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis

    https://eeas.europa.eu/delegations/russia/30963/eu-restrictive-measures-response-crisis-ukraine_en

From what I read today, if the Latvian govt continues their campaign to force native Russians to speak Latvian there very well could be a war coming, and those complaining about this issue may have far more serious problems than claiming game rewards.

I will say, it does seem like a serious business goof to award Balkan state business to a Russian company in light of all that's going on, but hey, its a bunch of American Devs, what do they know about world politics and finance?

    ;)

EU restrictions towards Russia was very much in place when Portalarium made their business agreement with Black Sun.

The Baltic States (not Balkan) are members of EU and including them in the business agreement are segregating them from the rest of EU.

I doubt it was Garriott himself that was the Portalarium representative during this business transaction and the lawyers setting it up was very well aware of the EU/Russia situation.

Portalarium as owners of the game have full responsibility of the situation the Baltic state players are in today. Claiming they are just american devs is laughable at best.

I suspect they are waiting to see if BlackSun can fix it on their own. If not, perhaps there are clauses in the agreement to void if they can't perform.

Well it was meant to be a joke, so I managed to accomplish that at least.

Of course they are responsible, now we'll see how they manage this situation.

You guys need to spend more time on the Raw sub-reddit. We'd found the BlackSun documents months ago...

Blacksun signed contracts in March 2015 with Portalarium, and gave them a $500,000 advance on the basis of the game going Free To Play, and them having a permanent share in future revenue via the Add On Store.

However the player numbers are so terrible, this hasn't proven an effective model; most of the fund-raising that does come in does so via the Begathons which Portalarium hosts, rather than individual spending in the Add On Stores. Behind the scenes then, it's likely the region locking of accounts and the store is because BlackSun has had to be given a much larger share of that revenue, perhaps even total control... which has required they take full legal responsibility too.

Travian however seem to have a different deal; they're part of the marketing as well as being the Publishers in the German market, so it's possible the income from that contract is enough to make the difference... it's hard to be sure though, Portalarium have been very, very shady about discussing where the backers money has all gone. They still refuse to explain what happened to the investment in NeverDie which was supposed to be bringing crypto-currency into Shroud...
