Been in games long? Well then you have seen every possible payment model known to mankind. Now the ESRB is finally getting involved and talking about setting up warning labels for loot crates. Here is a hint, warning labels on anything never stopped people from getting what they wanted. If anything it could make the problem worse. However, we have to start somewhere.

You mentioned a lot of players have been driven away but I think the companies are still posting record profits which means less people spending more or more people spending in general. I know a lot of companies are having sales on their older games and some are even giving some older games away. I still have a backlog of games I haven't gotten to play yet that I bought as part of a package sale.
Then there's the mostly fee to have access to a lot of games.
