Nah I don't think they would gamble at one MMO with Star Wars... Blizzard has been it shows moving on to greener pastures like Overwatch and Hearthstone.

I don't think it would differ much than what EA is doing, EA gets heavy slander for loot boxes and all but as it made the news Activision is pursuing the same.

I have a friend who still has his blizz/activision stock in his portfolio and he says Hearthstone is just amazing beyond belief for stocks lol.

Just pulling up some SWG vids on youtube. Almost made me cry. :( lol

IMO as long as Disney gives "exclusive" rights to any one company it will just end up similar EA. That's just too much money to think about what's best for the IP or fans over their wallet. I think they should license out their IP to many different companies to create many different types of SW games like Games Workshop(Warhammer) but add some quality control somewhere in there.

Thank you all for you humorous comments today. I never laughed so hard in recent times.

@wizardly, you've never played Republic Commando? This was the funniest SW cars I think I've ever played.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Republic_Commando

I played this 3 times on Xbox 360 because is was so crisp visually. 1 by myself managing the squad and twice with my friend's kids coaching them to victory. This video above cannot do the game justice!

This game was probably the best SW experience ever....

Inasmuch as this article is based on pure speculation, and yet it has garnered substantial responses. I would guess any SW title would do well, so why not Activision

I would love to see a resurrection of SWG type game, but my hopes are low and i expect another weak theme park at worst, possibly ESO type game at best.

Is it the End of the Old Republic?
Disney has no problem with EA and TOR, so TOR will be left in the hands of EA. A La, if it ain't broke don't fix it. The only problem Disney has with loot boxes are the ungrateful and cheap gamers. Disney is about making money and sees loot boxes as making money, but you can't get blood from a stone.

A Star Wars Online Game Similar to Destiny?
As far as I can tell Destiny can be described in simple terms as a seek and destroy shooter. Battlefront 2 can be described as a destroy shooter. That is close enough for me. The problem is gamers don't want to pay to play it.

    Timing the Shift
I'm going to skip this, as being irrelevant.

    Would the Fans Win?
No. What do the fans want? To play with out cost, and that won't happen. Ever Publisher and Developer saw loot boxes as a win win solution. They wee shock, but not surprised at the public out cry. Customer are no good cheap bastards. Can Blizzard / Activision handle Star Wars? I say Yes, think SW-Overwatch. But we will hear the cry of, "It costs money to play. Therefore P2W."

F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

Which puts them at roughly the same level as EA in that regard.

Just as EA got backlash for Battlefront 2, Activision Blizzard got their consumer slap on the wrist for the RMT AH.

I have not seen a single SW game that i really enjoyed or wanted to finish.

Well, considering there hasn't really been a good SW game in about 15-20 years...

As for an 'Activision' Star Wars game, I imagine it wouldn't look much different than an EA Star Wars game... that is: flashy graphics, empty story, sub-par gameplay, centered around Luke / Vader, and MTs at every corner (because haven't you heard, Star Wars doesn't sell well enough to cover the CEOs 3rd jet).

Personally I'd prefer it if the licence wasn't exclusive, with Disney willing to grant it to (or be the publisher for) any studio willing (and able) to make a great game.

How about a Star Wars themed battle royale game. Isn't that the "in" thing at the moment...?

What I want to happen and what I think will happen is vastly different.

Want: A producer/Development studio that can make a legitimate SWG two (Pre-cu), minus the bugs, with updated graphics. This would be a good starting point. I loved the many theme parks within an open Sandbox.

What will happen (most likely) Whichever studio gets their hands on it, they will be tied to making huge amounts of money. SO they will follow a flavor of the month approach to monetization.  As we see recently, and with no foreseeable end in sight, is Pay to win cash shop/gambling boxes. They will over hype whatever half-finished garbage they throw together, make some money, then launch a Shooter, action hack and slash, hint at some 'secret' project that will never see the light of day, release some crap for mobile devices and ultimately be forgotten within a few months.

Except, of course, by us, that love to sit here and pontificate on these sort of things, and make posts about: I told you so! a few months after the rest of the gaming world has moved on to the next shiny.

    Or something like that.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

    What I want in a sw game is;

    1. Social diversity that contrasts Slums and dark under bellies vs rich high tech society/ beautiful utopias
    2. Mini games - swoop racing, pazaak
    3. Many races
    4. Player creation with many races
    5. 'Fun' action oriented combat
    6. Balanced pvp to have duel arenas
    7. Bounty Hunting
    8. Player housing, and player made content
    9. Platforming using sw abilities with landscape
    10. NPC alignment, complex AI system, and NPC armies with seiges and NPC politics, which can involve players directly and indirectly
    11. Open world pvp
    12. Conquest mechanic

    13. Different server types to include something like a games of throne simulator

And may be as a comprise have little questing, and a short story to have all these things at start, and focus on adding value to replay ability and have a system that makes one character into any class similar to secret world as a progression system.

I want a more mature SW game by having the cantinas, and the dark world, with the gambling mini games. However since SW is also part of disney thats not going to happen. So to be realistic I would like something that kind of rips off the SW universe while being 'original' and have a mature game that I would enjoy.

Otherwise it will be just like any other themepark MMO with big money making another theme park SW skinned MMO.

if disney did pull the contrat and pass it to activision it would not improve anything, looks like most here forget the D3 problems with his whole RLmarket.

at the best closing the old republic would be a good thing

The problem with the RMAH in D3 wasn't that an RMAH was a bad idea, it was the greed and/or stupidity of Blizzard. They made it damn near impossible to complete the final difficulty without getting the extremely rare drops (based on a terrible RNG) or buying them in the RMAH. Of course making the drop rates horrible only encouraged people to buy the items, which also gave Blizzard a cut. The RMAH was rigged to make Blizzard more money. If they hadn't totally screwed people over with the poor RNG (which was likely done on purpose) people wouldn't have been forced to use the RMAH and pay outrageous prices for items they should have been able to get easier from drops.

An RMAH in a game is fine as long as the company doesn't "cheat" in order to force people to have to use it. Like a cash shop, if people want to buy items with real money does it matter if the company gets it, or a player does? It doesn't to me as long as it is a fair system and I never have to use it if I don't want to. When a game forces you to buy cash shop items in order to be able to enjoy the game as it should be, or complete it, then there is a problem.

Give Bethesda a chance at a SP RPG for Star Wars and let Ubisoft do the MMO part. I don't trust Activision. Of course I don't trust Ubisoft either, but I think they are the better of those two evils. Giving it to only one publisher isn't going to solve anything.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

How about KOTOR 3 by pretty much ANY developer/publisher instead of worrying about SWTOR? I didn't like the game but it seems to have life in it. Can you imagine the mad dash for a KOTOR 3? I can, because I'd be one of the people scurrying to get it. Sure, maybe it's not really an MMO, but everything is online now and I am quite certain it would have paid DLCs, etc like 99.8% of other games now, so what's the problem?

Honestly, it's funny how SWTOR fanboys cling on their ego fixation. Not even the promise, hell even a PROOF of better games to come would make them wince.

But they'll have to come to terms with how this'll go. I don't think it can survive up to 2020.

And of course, as always, you get labeled a "hater", a "troll" etc. Even if you try to have a discussion. Honestly, like trying to talk to diehard believers. :D
Well, if you are going to call people "fanboys" then yeah, I will assume that the timbre of your discussion merits being called a hater or troll.
