Star Wars: Battlefront II News - Unsubstantiated rumors are swirling that EA may lose the exclusive license to make Star Wars games. According to entertainment site, "Cinelinx", multiple sources have reached out to reveal Disney's unhappiness with EA, even going so far as to "higher ups pull[ing] EA to the 'principal's office' to talk about what's going wrong". In addition, these same sources claim that Disney has also reached out to Ubisoft and Activision about developing Star Wars games.

Wonder if the online petition had an effect on their decision if this is true.

Hopefully something the fans want will come from this instead of "games as a service".

I am not surprised that they are unhappy with EA about the IP, but its somewhat laughable that they might consider Activision or Ubisoft as being a 'safer' pair of hands for it rather than just 'more of the same'. Not really sure who i would consider to be a better developer for a future Starwars game, so much would depend on what type of game they are looking to be made, whether its 4X or Single or Multiplayer RPG etc. Honestly at this point i would be more than happy to see a single player game being made using the Starwars IP, another Battlefront type of game using it would be extremely disappointing.

Didn't they have their own and closed it?  They created Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Club Penguin games.

This would be great news, but sounds too good to be true.

I personally really dislike exclusive licenses when it comes to big IPs. I fully understand the business appeal of them - guaranteed money for Disney and less competition for EA - but as a consumer they suck balls. For me personally, the current situation sucks as I hate EA and boycott their games, primarily because they make shit games but also because they're a negative force within the games industry and I refuse to support a company that is actively hurting my favourite form of entertainment.

An IP like Star Wars appeals to such a wide variety of people with a wide variety of interests. It is therefore unreasonable to expect that a single company would be able to produce games to satisfy the fanbase. I personally want a SW MMO, but I also want a single player RPG along the lines of TES, a strategy game, some more action games like Jedi Knight, I'd like another pod racer, some more x-wing type games, as well as shooters. A single company, even one as big as EA, will never be able to deliver.

So, whilst it requires more work from Disney, I really believe that they should be offering licenses on a game-by-game basis. If Bethesda want to do a single player Star Wars RPG and can afford the license, let them do it. If Creative Assembly want to do a Total War version of Star Wars, crack on. Disney can remain in control, so they can prevent over-saturation and can also do something to help with quality, but this would really open up the field and, in my opinion, increase the value of the brand.

It seems to me that they want to stick with the big guns in the industry which is understandable. If this is happening, it is more about leaving EA than where they end up and Activision does not keep appearing in top twenty worst company lists. Even though many of its dubious revenue practices are identical.

    You know...I loved this article.

    https://www.destructoid.com/can-star-wars-just-stop-for-a-little-bit--486868.phtml

I really love Star Wars, don't get me wrong. But it's like there's this massive Star Wars overload that's making me less and less interested. Too many movies. Too many prequels. Too many games. Too many mobile apps. Too many...too much...All SW all the time.

    I need a break, though I doubt one's incoming.

    To quote the article:

Disney has had a problem recently of not knowing when to stop with their franchises. They'll find something that's a success and milk it for all it's worth. In the span of three years since the release of The Force Awakens we've had Rogue One and The Last Jedi premiere with Solo coming out in May, not to mention Star Wars Rebels concluding its four season run in March. So that's four Star Wars movies and an animated series in three years, compared to the prequel trilogy's three movies and a Cartoon Network animated series that tied in to the trilogy over the span of seven years. Not only that, but Disney has announced that Rian Johnson will be making his own trilogythe creators of Game of Thrones will work on another trilogy, the spin offs will most likely continue with a rumored Boba Fett movie, and Disney has plans for several new Star Wars shows to most likely air on their upcoming streaming service.

So in total we have nine upcoming movies, at least two spin-offs, several TV shows, and that's just of what we know. There may, and most likely will be, more projects announced in the coming months to capitalize on the franchise's recent resurgence. You may have noticed that I've neglected to talk about Star Wars video games and books, but that's for a good reason. In the realm of video games, Star Wars never really went away. Gamers have had classic Star Wars games on most major consoles, whether it was piloting a snowspeeder on Hoth in Shadow of the Empire, platforming on the SNES trilogy, shooting your way to galactic conquest in Battlefront 2 (the good one), or being an action badass with OP force powers in The Force UnleashedStar Wars found a home with gamers and has always had a home there, so more Star Wars video games don't surprise me at all. I mean, it is surprising that they've morphed into whatever the hell Battlefront 2 was, but that's a whole other topic.

Considering that the parent company is Disney, the focus is always about profits.  It's a behemoth for a reason.  Walt hasn't been at the reigns for decades.  You hate EA?  Disney eats EA for lunch.

are you people out of your minds ? bethesda ?!
they litteraly can't release a game without it being filled to the brim with multitudes of bugs and horrible optimization. hell, if it wasn't for actual competent modders all their games wouldn't be this praised.
you can say what you want about EA/dice but at least the game looks incredible, sounds amazing and is probably one of the most optimized multiplayer game out there. their games are beautiful empty shells with predatory business model but at least they run properly without the need for third party devs to fix the awful mess.

i'd love paradox to make a grand strategy star wars game, cdpr to make a proper kotor 3 and whoever is capable of it to finally make a new galactic battlegrounds game. even a telltales game could be pretty damn amazing if done correctly, there is so much extended star wars universe material out there for that.

I don't think it's so much the developer, per se, but the reputation. Let's face it, people hate EA. So, from a branding perspective, it hurts the Star Wars brand to have them making Star Wars games. You make BF2 under Activision and a great deal of the negativity surrounding it just *poof* disappears.

You seem to be suggesting that Bethseda (and other companies) should produce dlc for free.

Skyrim had 3 paid expansions right? Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonstone. It was only later that they produced a GotY edition. So no change.

Now if you want to bemoan the rise of loot boxes etc. etc. OK. If you want to suggest that some dlc is to expensive OK. At the end of the day though it costs money to create content so why shouldn't there be a charge?

Disney doesn't give a damn about anything but F2P mobile games (which are games as a service) with microtransactions and loot boxes. They have been in that business for close to 10 years now. They even published their own SW mobile games on top of those made by EA. Their up-coming Disney published SW game is a mobile shooter where you collect heroes...

The only thing they are trying to do is have a price war between the AAA publishers over the license to increase its value for the renewal in a few years. These deals takes years to sign.

Them or Rockstar. Either of them have the potential to give us a really good game. I fear Disney might have a slight problem with Rockstars image though.

I definitely appreciate what you're saying.

Weirdly for me, this isn't something I'm experiencing at the moment. When I was younger I remember counting up the number of Star Wars games I'd played and having to give up once I'd passed 30.

But, for the last 5-7 years I've basically experienced a drought. I don't know whether it's because I'm older, or because I boycott EA, but I've basically not played any Star Wars games for ages. It is my favourite IP but it has to sit on top of a good game. I tried Force Unleashed but that was garbage. The new battlefronts are shit, but being from EA I'd never buy them anyway. Everything else seems to be mobile or kids games.

So, for me, I'm actually desperate for a decent Star Wars game! Like Bill, my preference would be for an Elder Scrolls style RPG, but I'll settle for pretty much any form of RPG set in the Star Wars universe. For some reason there have just been very few RPGs set in the SW universe and KOTOR/2, despite the praise both games received, had shockingly bad gameplay.

On the film front, yeh, fatigue may set in. If every film was great then bring it on, the more the merrier. But, The Last Jedi sucked really hard. I can accept a single bad film in the franchise, but if any of the next few are also bad then my interest is going to drop. Unfortunately Solo doesn't look great so far, and with Rian staying in charge of the next major film it looks like I might soon be done with modern Star Wars and will just stick with the past.

I agree with the above, it all could be smoke and mirrors, leaked rumours all to mix the politics up ready for the license going to a bidding war. Creating a little hype in the market (game companies) I expect a whole heap more in " There are rumours swirling around" department.
