Star Wars: The Old Republic was a massive MMORPG launch back in 2011. The game is often called one of the last great MMOs to come out of that era. It was steeped in Bioware storytelling with huge plotlines to follow. Factions between the Sith and the Republic, along with Light and Dark side Force choices made for your character. Over time, SWTOR continued to see a lot of success. However, rumors circulate that Bioware Austin may be moving on to new projects. Is it time for the republic to end?

    I hope they do shut it down. It's the first step towards a new Star Wars MMO.

    I don't think they would.

    I don't see any western company making a high budget mmorpg for a very long time. Why would they? The chance of them making something that people will like (and I'm not talking about early star wars galaxies peeps) is just as iffy as any mmorpg.

    I would say it's a lot easier for them to add content to this mmorpg and take advantage of the Star Wars hype being generated by all the movies they are doing than making another mmorpg and hoping it will have any traction.

    One things for sure, if EA decide to look at shutting SWTOR down they will make the decision based purely on economics with no regard for the players.

    The game does have loot boxes, so anything is possible.

    To be honest I too hope it gets shutdown and when developers fall silent for so long that normally is a bad sign that they have been offloaded onto other projects.

    I wouldn't miss this one to be honest, don't get me wrong if you like solo play then story wise I thought this was a good play through but as an MMO it falls way short.

    The point is that no game is going to satisfy everyone. Not possible. So they hypothetically shut this down, spend ginormous amounts of money to make another and there is no guarantee it's going to do any better.

    It goes back to what I said way back about NPS - Net Promoter Score.

    You have promoters, passives and detractors. It's going to take a lot of resources to "hopefully" shift detractors into passive let along promoters. So better to work in making the passives more happy and turn them into promoters.

    They already have a product and a product that some people like, some are "ok" with and some dislike.

    Them making a whole new game isn't necessarily going to satisfy the detractors and who knows what it will do with their current promoters let along the passives.

    However, it's a known quantity. They can add to it, make it better, make sure the current promoters are happy and turn passives into promoters. Those are the easiest people to cater to.

    I honestly doubt that, as SWTOR's playerbase is still massive.

    This would be only possible if Bioware has some very ambitious plans for a new MMO, and even then, why the need to kill a successful MMO?

    I still enjoy the game and if I remember right F2P was making them around 7m a year. What I see in game now I wouldn't be shocked if they make lot more than that now. I would love for a new SW MMO, yet this one still gives me enjoyment.

    This mmo is a hard one to judge. EA ruined Bioware. And this mmo went the same direction.  I guess it's still fun for some. Since it's the only star wars mmo left.  But overall  i hope they bring something new in the future for the star wars franchise. But i highly doubt that with EA in control.

    A new Star Wars MMO? Zero chance.

    Star Wars Galaxies of Heroes makes 4.8m a month just on iphone. No way Old Republic is pulling those numbers.

    AAA MMO's are dead.

    And that's the thing, why should they spend millions and millions on making another new mmorpg only for all the drama that will enuse on the forums, for it to "hopefully" do "ok", and then in a few years someone to say "when are they going to make a new Star Wars mmorpg?"

    When they can spend a bit less on other types of games and get better return.

    I'm trying to find the purpose of this thread. Out of the blue, filled with speculations and without one tiny fragment of useful info.

    Not going to happen, EA and Disney have a contract where EA has exclusive rights to star wars games. Doesn't end til 2023..if they don't renew it.
