Well this is great news for CU and for RvR gamers in general. I'd speculate that this announcement and speed up in development will push Crowfall to avoid further feature creep to get theirs out the door prior to CU. ( Good or Bad, shrug)

Great news, I have high hopes for CU and respect MJ for not being tempted to go down the loot box or microtransactions route.

Mark Jacobs is a decent person I'm glad that his company got this infusion. Mass PvP is often a mess and I prefer there be less people on the screen with fighting being more about smaller groups.

    Weird thing.

Their obsession with lowering the poly count on every single new model the draw, the performance over graphics attitude and overall the fun game first and postcard maker last is what prompted me to back the game.

There IS a crowd of players who, pardon my French, truly don't give a shit about the graphics. Even though it might be hard to believe, we are not saying it because we are in self-denial or because we have some other agenda, we REALLY don't care. I would play DAOC still if the UI was not so atrociously incompatible to today's resolutions.

It's just that different players have different "needs". Maybe they don't care to cater to the players who want graphics over everything else, which makes sense to me: not every game should be designed to please every player (even though that seems the trend with MMOs nowadays)

    Agreed. Gameplay before graphics.

I still go back to EQ1 even though the UI is so outdated and the character models have this graphical flicker that irritates me. Whenever I have stopped playing EQ1, it wasn't because of the graphics, but b/c I enjoy the game so much that it begins to seep into the rest of my life and I have to cut myself off.

The good news is that they have always emphasized that small group pvp within the game will also still be a focus. Sieges are just part of the game (and the reason why the engine was built due to sieges never been done properly before) with many other styles of pvp offered through a massive open world.

Unlike most games that have large guild mechanics and that's it (other than on-the-fly, small group and raid formations with no real formality and long term benefits) CU will support small warbands with guild-like perks and control. They could temporarily join massive sieges or only just focus on small target skirmishes like escort mission objectives, smaller sieges or town raiding and the like.

But I get you point and the overall game still is indeed a concept not similar to convention.

Was exactly what was betting on, what this game most needed is more on the development front to catch up on the daunting task that is for one Indie to develop one MMO.

Perhaps now quality can be pushed to get more artists, improve the game visuals beyond the large focus they have put on the backend to support large-scale battles, and so on.
if only more mmo's actually cared this much about how many players could interact at once on screen with a decent framerate

not every mmo is designed around mass pvp, so for pve centric games having 500 players on screen is not a goal.

So this is not something that all games need

I hate to explain the joke, but given that he was replying to Max Bacon, I'm pretty sure Pantaro was making a Star Citizen reference.

    I could be wrong, though.

I actually think the level of detail in the game is quite good. They emphasize optimization but it doesn't mean it looks like shit. The biggest draw back is the lack of polished affects and animations (or even complete lacking of animations and affects attached to skills and classes) so we see a crap ton of place holders as already mentioned.

This is where the old school term comes in. We get such nice visuals in games like Crowfall early in development but CU had to go another route and we won't see such pretty visuals until early beta (I don't even want to say beta 1 as that will be pretty raw).

A good example is in JamesGoblin's thread:
    https://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/470841/first-ever-player-made-footage-of-assassin-duel#latest

Notice how Crowfall uses Wow-like animations for abilities. This is very easy to do overall (and of course already directly supported in the engine they use).

CU has to create a unique animation for every move in game as attacks are realistic. If you swing your sword at an enemies head it needs an animation moving the body and arms to attack someone's head with a sword. Dodging, flinches, parries, etc are all realistic need animations. Sounds per animations and impacts need to be attached individually as the game uses real physics to notify impacts. Magic is using a bit more of a special affect method to save their sanity but still allow visual recognition of what's happening for counters.

All this animation and affect creation takes them far longer to do (but of course they are being as intelligent as possible to reduce redundancy). This is what we have to wait to be put together along with siege warfare (actually initially being tested now) and the other core pillars of design. Later we get the large maps and more classes slapped together and suddenly the game starts to take form rather quickly.

Until we actually see this however, it is nearly impossible to convince everyone of what to expect.

According to massivelyOP's version of the story, Camelot Unchained hired a new producer away from the Star Citizen team.

I've been patiently waiting for this announcement. Its great news and now I'm confident it will most likely release. DAoC was my first mmo in 2001. So naturally, I'm excited to see what MJ has in store for us.

I'll most likely jump in during the beta closer to launch. I'm hoping there will be some successor or inspiration of my first class Thane. Can't wait to see more class and race reveals.
