Anyone know If Monster Hunter World will scatch a MMO itch?

vtravivtravi Member UncommonPosts: 372
I have never played a Monster Hunter game before. This game looks great and I will buy on day 1. I am kind of hoping that this will fill the MMO void in my life at the moment. I know this is more of a coop game but I am wondering if it uses a Trinity like system with healers, Support and tank like classes? Do the battles require team work or is it just all dps and dodge? Will the game have any kind of AH? These are just a few questions. If you know or have any comments please post, Thank you

There are weapons and items which can help the team overall, but there really isn't any sort of hard 'trinity' in place. Some weapons are inherently more defensive or offensive in nature, and the hunting horn is definitely designed with a support role in mind, though it's more than capable of holding its own damage-wise.

As for teamwork, if MHW follows suit the low to high level monsters won't require too much (though it'll help), but the really high end mutant/ deviant variations will be extremely tough to bring down efficiently without some sort of coordination. I think this'll be especially true in MHW, where the environment itself is going to play a much larger part during battles, seeing as how it's no longer just a static backdrop, but something which can be used by both players and monsters to gain an advantage. Also, subquests and bounties completed by one player in the group will actually give a reward (money, better chance of carving rare monster parts, etc.) to everyone who helped, so grouping will offer a big advantage there.

I doubt there will be trading or auction houses though. Progression is almost entirely gear-based, and a large part of the fun of MH is having to earn those upgrades by slaying monsters. An AH or trading would completely nullify that aspect of the game. You have to work for what you want!

Never buy on day one, wait for the reviews, will only take a few weeks.

It's more like a co-op game than an mmo.

I'm hoping it'll be good too.

Just be teleported to an instance with randoms, kill the one enemy, teleport back to town, repeat.

I just told you the entirety of the game.  It's a terrible premise for an MMO.

I've always been excited about the concept of Monster Hunter, but every time I've tried the games in the past, I've not been able to get into it.

What @kadepsyson says is pretty much true. It's a game about soloing big monsters and collecting stuff from them. Very cool if you like that sort of thing, the combat can get intense, but it doesn't have a lot of depth. I don't know if MHW will deviate much from that or not.

Also, just to say... MHW is getting a PC release later this fall. So that gives plenty of time for the Console version to pan out one way or the other, if your inclined to do so.

Get/craft the right armor, bring the right traps and poisons you've been making, study the weather, study the creatures habit, sharpen your weapons, prepare the right food. It is NOT teleport in, smash, collect, leave. It is a hunting game VERY much and at higher levels the preparations and gathering/crafting/cooking is absolutely essential.

You are right it would make a terrible MMO though. Will be buying it soon however, there is nothing like MH.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'
