Back then it had no content at all, where as today it has quite a lot, and ive spent way too much time in that game over the last few weeks than I’d care to admit, lol.

Nah there is really none for me or the human race.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
I've heard good things about Rimworld and Factorio.
I've played a lot of Skyrim, but even more Oblivion and Morrowind.

Age of wonders and Heroes of might and magic games are as bad. One would think it should be easier to keep track of time when playing something turned based but for some reason is it actually harder.
So, for example, I recently bought some DLC for Cities: Skylines so I've started a new city to take advantage of the new features. Planning is extremely important for getting your infrastructure right.
It becomes very easy for me to sit there and plan out parts of my cities for hours on end. In my mind, I'm thinking "well, I'll just sort out this small area", but before you know it you've spent 2 hours laying out the perfect road network, putting in rail, tram and bus lines, adding city services like police, schools etc. This is before you've even zoned out your area for residential, commercial and industrial! So then you zone and you think to yourself "yeh, that looks like its going to work, I wonder if it will?" So then you sit back and watch your city start to grow, that leaves you time to think about tweaks and stuff.
Before you know it, 4 hours have passed and all you've done is create one small section of your city! And there is always more to do....tweaks to improve the aesthetics, changing road types to improve traffic flow, adding roundabouts, adding unique buildings, changing bus lines.....it keeps sucking you in!
The total war games have a similar effect. I always start with a strategy - I'm gonna build a new army then send it into that province - but it might take 10 turns to build the army, each turn could take 10-15 minutes. You don't want to stop playing until you have executed your strategy, so you keep going. Yeh, easily waste hours that way.
Most people have never heard of the earliest game I can remember getting lost in time with; Stonekeep.
