Because I have a host of old games that just don't work on my modern rig. So I imagine that with all the developments in hardware and software that some changes are going to have to be made. And also the game needs to work with their billing software and store and whatever else they have going on in the back end.
Blizzard already explained that the original build would not work with their current server infrastructure. Not sure what Sean is trying to say, but it's not relevant unless he's calling Bracken a liar.
Generally, in today's landscape, I might agree he could very likely be blowing smoke. But, this isn't a startup crowdfunding team. It's Blizzard. They've created enough quality experiences to warrant some faith in Bracken's words. Specifically, faith enough to believe it over a random forum warrior's words to the contrary.

Now the reality is that we still don't know exactly how close to that vanilla Experience Blizzard will get with their classic servers.
Maybe the classic servers will give you a chance to relive your love story.
Maybe they change some stuff that makes it different and not quite the same experience.
And maybe the playerbase will be different enough to not quite allow for the same experience.
The tricky part in trying to recreate a MMORPG experiences from 13 years ago - so many variables can get in the way.
It is also possible that EMU servers pulled Vanilla off better than Blizzard will, due to the more limited playerbase, and not being driven by profits like Blizzard is, and not having to make classic servers for the general masses.
Time will tell.

On that note, I think most of the delay on this project will be business or marketing related on not technical related. The chance that they dont have or will not get the code is EXTREEMLY small. Some aspects of it might have to be re-factored but the core game will just be restored very likely.

If a company is going to do something, they will want to do it the fastest and cheapest way possible. In the case of Blizzard, they tend to at least try to make it as high quality as they can. So clearly there is more to what needs to be done than just getting a stable version and hitting "run".
