It feels like this is a list we should revisit every so often, especially as games change, games launch, and games die in the world of MMORPGs. The following is a list we compiled using something we like to call “our hearts and minds and asses”. Our Top 10 Great MMOs of All Time list is merely our own thoughts, put to paper. We absolutely welcome your own insight, and soon we’ll begin a poll of our users to catalog the Players’ Choice for 2017 too. Now, let’s get on with it!

    Still think that Asheron's Call is missing though, maybe a typo? ;-P

    I think that AC would definitely be tied for 2nd with EQ. AC was my first love when it came to MMO's!

    @ripperx would agree with both of you. I just couldn't find a spot for it. Without some of the newer games, maybe in the back 5. It was a great game, but doesn't have the lasting impact of some other older titles.

    It's so bittersweet that City of Heroes is still recognizably a legendary MMO but can't be played. Bring on the successors!

    I'm inclined to agree. Asheron's call was an extremely popular MMO and had a very loyal following. (And I didn't even play it)

    I played Lord of the Rings Online over World of Warcraft and even I wouldn't put it on this list.

    GW2 and ESO were after 2010 and some others get a mention in the intro, such as BDO, but realistically, there's been nothing earth-shatteringly better than what existed 7+ years ago.

    Technology has improved massively over the years, but unfortunately, it's less risky and more profitable to make cash shop mobile games.

    I also think that companies recognise that the attention-span of people in general isn't what it used to be because people are into the latest shiny thing and so those who would put hundreds and hundreds of hours into a game as less prevalent than before.

    It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

    It is just huge resource waste....'

    OT, prepare for lots of whining although you guys pretty much covered everything in the included article. You can't win this one. Besides that, a nice, somewhat politically correct, balanced list.

    SWG was my first MMO and I still haven't found a game that captivated me like it did. SWTOR is alright, but it doesn't compare to the community and freedom Galaxies had.

    I keep hoping for a spiritual successor set between Episodes 6 and 7.

    Just like almost everyone else I only read the game titles.

    Could have litterally written anything under each game, like a recipe for a turducken under any of those games, majority wouldnt have noticed. 
    You must be a veritable Joy "in real life" (I'll put the big smiley image/>.

    I should add that they did say they were staying away from eastern games:

    I'd swap the top 2 to WoW in second place and EQ in first. There can be no doubt that WoW changed the landscape completely but not all of those changes were for the better, and some of the changes were later dropped or Blizz did a complete 180.

    EQ also changed the landscape by putting players in a fully 3D world and the biggest advantage it has over WoW is the release schedule of new content and expansions, in most cases only 9 months apart unlike Blizzard's 2-3 years between expansions.

    Looking back now I had a much better experience with EQ which is why I'd put it at No. 1.

    SWG and DAoC Were my two favorite MMos in the golden age, I have help out hope for so long for a sucessor, but I have to admit, I probably would have half the expierience I had with those two games in this point in my life. Like Kane 72 said, an mmo as complex as SWG probably wouldnt hold my attention like it used to =(

    I like it when people like Everquest like I'm in the right place,I know validation and all but yeah it has to do with others acknowledging the things you love.
