its just the first story mission that sets up the game. D2 picks up where the first ended, the player is a pretty powerful Guardian, hence the high character level and all 200 gear, once the light is captured by Gall you lose your powers and when the actual game starts you'll be leveling up and looking for actual gear you can use.
