Does this game have any active playerbase still?

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Unfortunately, any active playerbase would be small. Guild Wars 1 just doesn't receive the updates that it needs to keep people playing.

It's a pity. A f2p relaunch with a small development team would be a great use of resources by Arenanet and would breathe some life into this masterpiece.

You will still find people in pre-searing but obviously that's more a 3d chat room now rather than a game.
You can still find people gathering for elite dungeons in the other hubs though.

I rather have a improved version of the original game for full price, not just a HD version but use GW2s engine for it. That would cost some money but they do have all art, the map design, balance and so on, so I am sure it would sell a couple of million boxes to us old fans at least.

Add a bit more economy (crafting etc.), make guildhalls more customizable, and give guild vs. guild battles some more love and I'm sold.

Though this may seem sacreligeous to some, I'd love a single-player (offline) version of the original Guild Wars. Might have to implement a way to skip certain missions, though?
This forum is broken. It is time to move to proboards, because they're broken.

Need to add the ability to jump.  ;)

    GW1 was amazing.

The best character builds, or at least among the best, of any themepark MMO
Great class system (though this is in a huge part because of how many builds one can do)
    Amazing story
    Great world layout
    Lots of content
    Great combat
    Great party system
    Great PvP system
    Great PVE system

Out of all those. GW2 only has...even greater combat lol. I'll give it the same world layout (in terms of how good it is), just to be a fair...GW2 world is pretty decent to me. It felt pretty much the same, since it wasn't open world, just large huge open zones you had to teleport into...guess GW2 is bigger, but the actual layout feels very similar to GW1. Like WoW is an open world themepark, because while you gotta teleport to continents, the entire continent itself is open world (ignoring dungeons).

As for the others... maybe some will disagree, but GW1 PVE was vastly better than GW2 PVE. But I think a big part was how much better the classes were, making "PVE" feel better, because the classes themselves were so good

GW2 just felt stale to me and yeah it all rooted with classes / character customization. Creating a build in GW1 was like making a deck for Magic The Gathering. Full control, numerous options, many, many opportunities for builds that feel unique and play very differently than even someone else with the same class and secondary class.

GW2 took away your secondary class, based half your build on weapon selection, and gave you a pitiful amount of abilities to choose from for the rest of your abilities.

I realize that's easier to balance, but for me it killed 90% of what I loved about GW1.

GWs engine had problems with that (it was a rather quick low budget thing) but if they change the engine you would get jump easily.

Look, I love GW 1, but..."amazing story"? Did you forget "bah, nonsense /kickbucket" moments? It was amazingly campy(Nightfall decidedly less so than others, but it also failed to really flesh out its characters) and fun, but amazing? I guess it'll have to suffice as an evolutionary step in MMO storytelling.
Some parts of the story were good but no, it was not something I would read in book form or anything. But then again can't I think of any MMO whos story is that good either. There are some singleplayer games.

GW had really good NPCs though, it is a shame they wasted the characters from the original game so much because those henchmens were really well written. The heroes from Nightfall weren't bad either.  NPC wise few MMOs get close to GW and I think it is that he means.

I would not mind reading a book about Mhenlo (the suicadal maniac that wiped my party more then a few times), Eve, Cynn and the rest. Just be careful with Ruric, he is one of the stupidest npcs I ever had the unfortunate pleasure of escorting and that say a lot.

I miss guild wars so much. GW2 just isn't what I loved about the original. If they remade GW1 with jumping and modern graphics/animations I'd play it for sure.

Right now I am enjoying secret world legends. Not as many skills, but choosing a primary and secondary feels just like guild wars, and I miss actual quests which SWL does really well.
