Are you playing with other people?? Really part of the 'multi' when it comes to M...MORPG?

The poll if for people who are playing games that are hardcore as in, play them 20+ hours a week.

Id have no issue with widespread acceptance of mics, being as important as a mouse; which is to say POSSIBLE to do without, but...

Although wearing those things gets annoying way faster than other devices.

    1. Handicapped people. They just do not get to play if they can not use voice?

    2. Squeaky, over-excitable pre-teens that have no tone/volume control, no way in hell will I be subjected to that.

    3. Voice has its place, and I know it absolutely does enhance gameplay for a lot of people (myself included most of the time) but there has to be some control involved as well.

    4. Trolling, if all are required to be on voice then you are going to end up with more than one of these guys...

The list goes on, but my point is no, it should not be required.

I feel like every game should have ingame voive like Lotro. Most don't so people use discord these days. If you are doing difficult group content then you should atleast be required to hear voice commands. You dont need to speak but you must be able to hear.

    5. Accents. In one guild I belonged to we had a couple of brothers we called the 'swamp people' if on separately you had a chance of understanding them, although one was pretty difficult. But the two of them together and they might as well have been speaking martian.

Lots of English speakers can be mutually unintelligible, text is often safer.

good for raids and such, but I have seen guild that require you to be on voice if you are online, F That

Not just no, but H No.  I'd like servers where nobody had voice, and it was a requirement to NOT use it.

Unless it's a group of friends I know well, I absolutely can't stand voice chat.

It seems to always be that one dude that doesn't have PTT and is chomping Doritos, the horrible parent yelling at their kid to stop crapping on the floor, and dude watching porn, someone who decides everyone wants to listen to their music, the stoner who has to inform everyone every five minutes that's he's gonna toke another one, etc.

And when I come across without wanting to use a microphone, I get told "WTF is wrong with you, don't you want to be a good player?" And I think to myself - what does a microphone have to do with being a good player?

Maybe I'm just an old fart anymore. I remember raiding in Planes EQ, with like 10 different chat channels, three bars of hotkeys, and no one used voice chat for anything. We still seemed to get stuff done; we just had to actually learn the encounter and pay attention to the screen rather than wait until someone in voice chat (or some addon) tells me to do something.

It's called evolution and no one can stop it. Human race is evolving and the technology as well with big steps, doing the same as back when you played EQ is not acceptable it's like staying asleep the whole time. EVOLVE!!!

Not every fad is evolution.  And not going with the flow is often a good thing.

Keep your voice.  I'll play games my way and that is with immersion, and learning encounters and the abilities of my characters as opposed to being ordered what to do.

Voice chat is an enabler of laziness, not an evolution.

I think it should be enabled by default, especially if you're in a group/party.

All mmos should probably have their own voice chat in game so there are not so many different voice programs used but be required to use, no.

Zero interest ever in voice chat in a MMO...Wayyyy too many bad experiences

Don't really need yet another mechanic to discourage grouping.

No it shouldn't be required even for raiding. We used to get by in raids just fine without going crazy on voice chatting and the like. Yes, it helps, but it should never trump a players comfort level and their skill level and knowing/learning the fight is going to go far further than them being in voice chat will ever be. If they are scatter brained or lose focus easily maybe voice chat would help even more, but it is irritating when it is a "requirement". Ask them to do it now and then to better organize even if they don't want to speak, but if you make it a requirement then you are just being a pedantic douche and if you attempt to force people to talk even more so.

how else can you coordinate in raids?

Well you could ask if someone knows the fight before hand. You can also make short hand code up among other things. We got by without voice chat in the earlier days of raiding when a slight error in group synergy could spell doom for everyone and yet we didn't require people to go crazy in voice chat. You do know back in 99/00 when everquest first came out we still had raiding and voice chat was more or less a fevered dream of a madman at the time to work well anyways (a lot of people were still on dial up and would take a long time to transition load screens). The same goes for FFXI and many other early games that had raiding and the like. We used to be able to coordinate just fine with no voice though and most of us still can do it without voice.

I voted yes, but with several caveats! Push to talk and ability to mute people that are obnoxious. There's also nothing worse that hearing screaming/crying kids constantly, someone vaccuming, toilets flushing, loud TV sets, etc

If a guild wants to require Teamspeak for raids thats fine that is their choice.  But MMORPGs should not require voice chat systems.

I think voice communication is very important for one MMO looking for immersion, usually, chats are clashed into UIs and it's perm norm not easy to keep track or get other player aware we're talking to him.

Some MMO's seem to even avoid things as chat bubbles like GW2, then after much suggestions they added them otherwise talk with people near you would be impossible if they didn't notice local chat.

So proximity voice chat should be a norm for those who promote player interaction.
  • MendelMendel Member LegendaryPosts: 5,609
I voted Yes, but with reservations.  If new features were added to allow the client to selectively block individual features, adjust volume on individuals, and otherwise deal with annoying individuals, then sure, I can adapt to that.  Chat is faster than typing, and a social game is about communication.

Besides, a required voice chat allows some interesting new features.  Walk into a tavern and your group chat transforms into a tavern-only channel automatically and reverts when you return to the larger world.  It could be interesting.

I suspect that a good part of the objection comes from people who would rather not have their male voice give away the fact that they're gender-bending.  That's the only kind of immersion that a required voice chat feature really interferes with.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Nope not in the least...And this is the I don't know how many polls about this already.  Many people just don't like talking to others using voice programs.  It can be due to being shy, worried about sexist people that wont leave them alone, etc...Also you would be alienating anyone that is mute as they could not talk online.

No game should ever require this.  It should be an option for those that want to use it.  I laugh at guilds when they say you must use this or install this.  No I must not.  The only one that must are the ones who don't know how to play and have to be hand walked thru everything.

Can it make gaming easier for group activities?  Yeah it does, but should it ever be a requirement.  Nope not ever.

OK as an option.  What would MMO's do about non compliance?  Three warnings then a permaban?  Disconnected if voip isn't running?  I don't think MMO's want to think up more ways to shrink their player base.
