What happened to this game?

in Secret World Legends
The MMORPG entry of TSW game has been renamed to "Secret World Legends" http://www.mmorpg.com/the-secret-world The website of TSW has been redirected to SWL https://www.thesecretworld.com

Their twitter also got their join date swapped https://twitter.com/TheSecretWorld https://twitter.com/SecretWorldLgds

So what the hell happened to this game? What's up with all these redirections. I thought TSW will continue to exist along side SWL where TSW will be more MMO oriented while the SWL is the Online-RPG oriented one.

    The original Secret World will be playable but in maintenance mode with no further updates.  All updates and new content will be for Secret World Legends.

    Personally, I and my gaming group are looking forward to this as it looks like they are keeping the best parts and re-doing all the pieces which were never up to par with other MMO's.

    The Secret World is being re-launched as part of their plan to get interest pumping on the game again. Not sure what that means exactly for the game.

    Well they have to apply it as a patch to the existing servers. Unless they plan to release brand new servers and migrate all characters and items from existing players (which sounds like a hell lot of work with potential of disaster and with Funcom's track record it would be a disaster).


    I was wondering too yesterday what was going on, as I logged in and I was latterly all alone on the server. There was litterly not a single player online. Even Gaia and the cities were empty. :-/

    Love the setting, and story. Would love if this change made the game good.

    In case of you've missed the infos since late March, TSW is dead - sure, technically "we're keeping the servers up", but even that won't be long anymore.

    That's exactly what they're planning, except the second part, instead of migrate they only gave the finger to the existing players. Their focus is on their new target audience, the action combat players :lol:

    So you can kiss goodbye to everything you achieved with your characters in TSW. If you decide to create an account for their new game, you can keep one of your character names - but only for 3 months, then even that is going back to the pool for all, and if you have several characters, well, tough luck.
    You also can keep some of your store purchased cosmetics, but still no list about them, they are sorting them out. And pretty much that's it.


    edit: as Agent Joseph above said, it is basically buying some more time without working on new content, they're releasing the dumbed down, rewritten and streamlined base content of TSW, but with action combat for the new audience, and then adding the rest of the existing content during the year.
    With the hinted Season 2 at the end of the year, so the same 9 months later as they promised it last year for TSW - and just like then, they haven't even started to work on it "we're focusing on Legends now, and let's see first how's the reception will be". Yeah, right :wink:

    I enjoyed the creepy atmosphere and puzzles when I played this game but the combat was wonky. If they kept the things that worked like the very good atmosphere and puzzles and changed the combat it might go a long way towards making it a better game. It would be free still so I suppose starting over will be feasible.
