I have no interest in giving a developer money before they are ready to give me a product.  If I want to invest in something, I'll stick to traditional means, i.e., the stock market.  At least there, there are laws to protect me (and my money) from shenanigans.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Yeah, but it won't stop you from losing your money.

I see them to be one in the same. You invest in the stock market to hopefully get something you want: money. You invest in a game to hopefully get a game you want. Either way there's a chance of things not working out.

It all depends on how satisfied one is in the current offerings of the genre, and the importance of a good mmo be made. For me, it's worth the risk of a few bucks. Should it be successful, the money I put into the game will be worth more to me than the same amount invested in any stock.

I pledged during the KS, but not post-KS. I found that it got a little bit cowboy following the KS. That being said, I'll play after release if it reviews well.

No, laws won't prevent people from losing money in the stock market.  Law do protect investors from fraud and misappropriation of funds, or at least provide legal recourse to the investor.  I don't see an equivalent in the crowd-funding arena.

Investing in a game via crowd-funding doesn't provide anything -- there's no ownership, no sharing of profits, not even a copy of the game.  All of these are dependent on the individual fund-raising project, not a regulated, standard set of agreements.  It has yet to be proven that there is any form of protection for the investor in any crowd-funded effort.  There have already been cases of misappropriations and suspect financial activity in several projects, including Pantheon.

Crowd-funding is new wave, far too out there for me.  I see it as akin to donating to a cause or idea; maybe the vagrant on the side of the street will really use the money for survival and will turn their life around.  Chances are, though, the only one to benefit runs a liquor store.  If you are in a financial position where you can afford such risks, then congratulations to you; you've made it as a philanthropist!   I'm not in a position where I can risk my meager finances on intangible, emotional returns.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Not really my style of game, but if it launches I likely will give it a try.

I'm not interested in funding KSers these days, though I don't rule out early access for games which are largely feature complete.

If you are in that tight a spot for funds, should you even be playing games? Hell Im not rich but I can afford to throw a couple hundred at something I want to support.

Nope. He said he didn't want solo players playing his game. And while I group 75-80% of the time in an MMO (even WoW I group most of the time), I do NOT support FORCED activity. The only people who like forced grouping are anti-social people who can't properly socialize unless they were forced to, which makes it NOT a social experience when its FORCED.

So he pretty much said for a huge portion of the playerbase he didn't want their money. No wonder their kickstarter failed.
I'm not sure what it feels like to be publicly and blatantly wrong, but you should let me know what it feels like once you check the last stream at 3:12:40. They make it a point to say that, while Pantheon will not be designed around solo play, they will encourage people to solo if and when they figure out how. They are pretty big on emergent game-play.

I pledged during the Kickstarter and after it failed on the official site.

The way I viewed it is I was currently wasting money on either terrible MMOs or single player games.  I usually don't invest early into anything, but I had been talking about why MMOs had been failing for years.  And, if I didn't put my money where my mouth was when an MMO actually promised to deliver on what I want well then I'd be no better than the the endless trolls that say MMOs need XYZ or they'd fail.

No other developers were wanting to make the virtual world I wanted, so it was put up or shut up time.

Well it seems to me you haven't paid any attention to their content released. They have said " We will always be a group focused game but there will be no effort made to discourage soloing. If you can find ways to do it solo they are going to encourage this" (Just about word for word from the live stream)

I pulled that comment directly from the Devs during the third twitch stream with CohhCarnage. It looks and sounds like it is going to be very much like early EQ soloing. If you can find a way then do it !

Except that there is no kiting, which was a primary solo method in EQ1.

Withtout kiting in Pantheon, soloing will be a lot more limited.
At the moment, on closed dev servers, as many things are still a WIP, that isn't to say that there won't be kiting for some NPCs, though ;)

I will not ever give a dime to a game before it is released...Dont believe in it

If you pledge now for this game, do we still have to pay monthly subscription to be able to play the game? (Hope not because I won't play it then. (I rather pay straight up $100-150 for a full developed fantastic game than pay monthly.)

I'm really looking forward to pantheon, but like many here I don't really like the concept of kickstarter.  Pre-ordering games before they are made just isn't my thing.

From everything I have read about this will be a subscription only game.  You will need to pay periodically to play.

Did you pledge after they won? Do you want to but waiting for some reason? Why did you pledge? Why do you not want to pledge?
Well, someone (I wonder if it wasn't you?) asked me why not last summer and I couldn't think of any reason and that is why I pledged.

But to be fair was the competition for most wanted game not really impressive this year.

But anyways, the game is certainly looking interesting and the pledge community is rather good. And while some people grumble a little about forced grouping I think it is refreshing when a game isn't focusing on soloplayers, they already have most MMOs today and we need a few group centric games äs well.

    ^Pretty much me.
The game doesn't interest me in the slightest.
Dated graphics (last I checked), archaic outdated mechanics that kept the MMO genre in the dark ages until WoW showed up, and bunch of other stuff I couldn't care less about.

    Nope. Pass.
Hopefully it'll satisfy the group that keeps shouting about wanting this stuff though.
...But I doubt it... since they'd have nothing left to complain about then. :pleased:

As much as I like some of the idea's they have about going back to a point where MMO's were more community and team oriented. I can't and wont jump in a time machine to do it. This is coming from a guy who recently spent a lot of time in Lineage 2 classic... a 14 year old game.. and I was fine with it. And yet I see Pantheon's piss poor graphics, aesthetics and combat and cant help but wonder what the appeal is. Its one thing to visit an MMO you have played ages ago and had a blast for a nostalgia trip but even then its not the same. You are all chasing a pipe dream in hopes that it will be reminiscent of the way things were. But I sincerely doubt it will deliver.

the fun thing about pessimism is it require nothing but to stay back an wait for something better.

the game is in alpha yes, so everything looking an playing bad is part of the alpha, it is still been made give it time. i rather be optimistic  that things can only get better versus it only going get worse.

  • NoxeronNoxeron Member UncommonPosts: 64
From what I can find, the game just looks... bad.
The animations feel off and the graphics ain't either good or "artsy".
If they don't have a huge overhaul of graphics then I won't ever even buy it.
Have they said anything about improving the graphics? I don't really follow their progress.

Vanguard and the parking lot incident. Pantheon running out of money after starting crowdfunding on their site.

I will do the safe thing and wait for him to actually deliver something before I hand him money.

Not something I do for any game, nor will I ever.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

Yes, but the part you are not mentioning is that they want money now for a product that is bad "now". Might not release for 3 more years, might be a stripped down barely viable product. Not something that is worth paying for at this time.
