There are very few search engines, but a lot of metasearch engines. Many of these search sites buy search services from Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo, mainly because it's costly to maintain all that data.

Hotbot, one of your examples...for example.

Chances are, whichever search engine you use, Google is tracking the hit.

I'd really like to be the researcher getting paid to do this.

"So Jimmy, whatcha got for us after five years of research?"
"Welp, it turns out that League of Legend and WoW are the most popular games in the US!"

I mean seriously.  Someone got paid to provide knowledge that's as common as water is wet.  Where do I sign up for these gigs and how much do they pay?

    Trump voters play WoW?

Well hell, all they had to do was look at the number of twitch viewers and come to the same conclusion.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

It wasn't 5 years of research. It was 5 years of search data.

It probably took someone 5 minutes to craft the Bigtable syntax to get the information.

Geez, it's Saturday night and some of y'all need to get out and loosen up a bit or go watch Super Bowl commercials for giggles and feels. It was a fun piece of news with a fun bit of data collected. *eye roll*

Well, actually, according to the site those news came from (link in the news post itself, by the way) the clear winner was Minecraft ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No, that you completely missed the purpose of her post by arguing a completely topical point. Maybe it's you that needs time for reflection lol

Y'all missed this little tidbit. Well, all but one other person.  Minecraft left everyone including League of Legends and World of Warcraft in the dust.

*One exception: Minecraft simply crushes all competition in search volume and would have made our map much less interesting. We could—and perhaps should—do an entire post on why and where Minecraft is so popular, but we chose to remove it from consideration this time because it seems like a genre outlier."

I would argue there are many more people who ONLY use Google, and no other search engines.
