One of the more unexpected announcements to hit the MMO-space late last year was that Turbine was handing over Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online to Standing Stone Games and to be published by Daybreak Game Company. We caught up with the team to find out more about the transition and the future of both venerated games.

They essentially took the teams from Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online and let them spin off into a new studio as Turbine will most likely make mobile games.

So same people developing the game (only no Chief Executive Officer) but different name. Published by Daybreak.

Old games.  But, good for the few players that still play those games?  Maybe?

  • flizzerflizzer Member RarePosts: 2,454
Yes, there are about a dozen of us that still play. We have LOTRO trivia night with the devs every Monday night and drink ale at Thorins Hall.

Standing Stone Games have nothing - whatsoever - in the slightest - to do with H1Z1.

SSG is just the new name for the team of devs who work  on LotR and DDO that were previously employed by Turbine.

All that DBG are doing is ..... err .....errrr ......  publishing the game that's it. Just don't ask what that means.

For the avoidance of any and all doubt though nothing to do with H1Z1, EQ1, EQ2 etc.

What I see happening is Daybreak shutting down these two MMOs but holding on to the IP so they can spin other games off. Daybreak is not going to spend money on 2 older MMOs that just are not making money, Trubine would have kept these games had they been making money. I am sorry but it is true. Don't believe me? Daybreak is owned by an investment company that buys new companies, takes certain product it wants and shuts down others. They use this as tools to get rights to certain IPs so they can use the IP in their own way to make money.

only thing I want to really know is, what will really happens with the characters in both games
FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

Will Daybreak game just be the graveyard of mmo's?

    Daybreak, eh?

    Heh.

Yeah they've got a great track record, so far. -cough-

So Turbine's just basically dumping all their MMORPGs? I see they didn't sell off Asheron's Call (unless I missed that news), and I'm glad for that. Maybe... just *maybe* we'll see a new AC title in the future, even if it's not necessarily a MMO. It's a great IP, and I'd love to see them do more with it.

Glad to see LotRO might be getting some love, again.

It had been my go-to game even after the Fangorn update.  Then's when the RNG went insane, and we were 8 months into what would turn into 2+ years of nonstop evacuation of villagers.  Trappings of the source material, I suppose.

Never could get into "Big Battles"; never felt like I was doing anything that meant anything.  Minas Tirith would turn out to be a great main questline smothered in Big Battles and busy work, being a delivery boy running from one end and level of the city to another...

Hate to pick apart a game I loved so much.  I will come back to play when all of this gets done, though I may end up just bee-lining the main story.  After playing Witcher 3 I can't help but think secondary quests can be pretty special, too.  And if they aren't, I just can't enjoy doing them, anymore.

Do you really think Daybreak a company where MMOs are going to, to get shut down is going to improve LOTRO?  Add to that the licenses is only renewed THROUGH 2017.  So if Daybreak is not making money do you see it getting renewed after that?

Sorry but LOTRO should be shut down just like several other MMORPGs right now.  DDO being another one.

We can only hope right?  AC was one of my first mmo.  I still remember the end of beta event like it was yesterday.

Could be.  Could just be Turbine selling off profitable assets before it files for bankruptcy, and that Daybreak will do what vulture corporations do.

Either way, High Elves, Mordor, housing revamps... sounds like they're going forward.

    They survived the Hobbit movies...

Do you want me to begin? My approx is that you won't be so excited anymore ;)

erm not sure what you mean but I think I can enjoy myself just fine with a new race/class. I'm not one of those people who jump into a game and jump out seconds later because I didn't know what I was getting myself into.

If they fix the character models/animations in LOTRO I would go back in a second. Every time I try I just cringe at the one thing I am guaranteed to have to look at 100% of my game time....my character. Horrible.

Daybreak has nothing to do with the license or development of either game. They will only be the publisher. Standing stone owns the licenses and is responsible for development.

Well, they've said they are making new avatars and working on new animations so "we'll see".

They mentioned ravenloft... ravenloft mmo? yes please!
All Access will soon expand to these games - daybreak seems to be gobbling up the smaller niche games, and trying to meld their playerbases together, which will keep some of these classics alive a while longer. Others may be shut down.

    Playing: Secret World: Legends

Waiting for: Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen

Daybreak can't shut down the games, they don't own them. They publish them only. It's not comparable to Daybreak shutting down games it owned.
