We’ll be running a series of brief interviews over the next few weeks focused on the games and companies of the MMO world, and what 2017 will bring. We’ve reached out to many, and the first one back to us with their answers was Black Desert Online and Kakao Games’ Rick Van Beem. Read on to see what they team learned from 2016, and what’s in store for 2017.

although it was not the smoothest of launches I do believe we did a pretty decent job.

Decent job as in completely and utterly failed, yeah.

That was the start of the downfall of this game. And players know what the remaining part of that was..

Part of me wishes I got into the KR version so I could experience a game that wasn't destroyed by an incompetent publisher.

Pushing more content in first year? All this content was in korea already and just needed language localization. Its much faster to update the game when it only needs localization. BDO came out 2014 in korea. Same reason why BnS is getting so many updates so fast.

Yeah, but BnS is bad and if we're going to compare games... Blade and Soul has been out since 2012.

I didnt compare them, I said bdo gets updates fast for the same reason that bns does. BECAUSE THEY BOTH HAVE BEEN IN KOREA FOR LONG TIME. Get it ?

No, thats one of the nice parts. You cant trade items, silver, etc so gold sellers have no means to transfer. Never seen a single gold seller in the game since launch and its awesome

So once again, more pointless content instead of fixing the underlying issues BDO servers have.

I suppose you could complain about the pop-in. But you can't have the quality of graphics the game provides without pop-in.
Just want to point out, that the reason pop-in is so prevalent is because the game has no loading screens between maps unlike the majority of mmos.

Just FYI, I am not sure this phrase is what you meant "completely and utterly failed" because they have added staff, and the game hasn't consolidated shards, also, it is still operational....rofl

I like BDO, but I just could not get into it....that said, you folks that give a game a month maybe more and preach doom and gloom, and complain non stop on those games forums is the problem....you know when this crap happens, the publisher or studio usually caves in that direction, and what ends up happening is one group of players gets their way, and the rest bounce....if you are all ready part of a gaming community, or are well known in something like here, your words hold more sway then folks realize....try less hate people, same crap has happened to SO many good titles, that YES they had crap launches, and other issues, but there will NEVER be a perfect launch, a perfect 1st year, a perfect title....MMOs are like a good wine, they get better with age

Hell, I am redownloading it now. Why not? I kind of got a small, forced vacation from work anyway. :(

I really like certain things about BDO, but I struggle immensely with the progression system with the stones and what not. I simply can't stand it at this point :/

All stuff that BDO players already knew, yep.

I was glad to hear about all the staff hiring they did though. Most MMOs fire people after launch, rather than hire extra.

Then buy already enchanted stuff off the MP. It saves you a lot of frustration. And do what's fun for you.

They seem to have squashed the hackers after mass bans and making certain functions server-side, like an MMO should be.

That's what people are doing right now.

There are few people that mastered the art of Enhancing Gear and they made a business out of it by flooding the market with their enhanced items so people with less patience and expertise can buy their gear without going through a panic attack.

    i find it just tedious.

It's its own little game of minutiae that is just not enjoyable.

I have no problem making these people rich (with fake money) while I play the game in a way that is completely enjoyable for me. Win/Win!
