Looks like people are still interested in an ancient super niche throwback mmo of a bygone era after all.

I would like to add that all of the logic layers and manual inspection of votes to determine validity were done across the 'entire' result of votes.  Not just a specific game or set of games in the vote.

How come so few PvE MMORG orientated games are made, when the only AAA one in the whole bunch is skyrocketing?

Or atleast make more games with PvE and PvP servers.

Why all these pure PvP games, what poll are the developers on those games looking at, when they try to evaluate what kind of gamers are out there?

    Sigh :(

I like the idea of Pantheon, but man, look at CUs character models, then back at Pantheons collection, then back at CUs ?

Its just that, pure PvE games is almost just as bad as pure PvP games.

    Man.

Wonder how many of the proxy votes could have been legit. It looks like MU has more of an international fanbase and it seems like that proxy stuff if used more in different countries than others. But I am far far far from knowing anything of what I'm talking about so I'll leave it up to the experts. Happy to see the results though, the Pantheon community really tried hard to keep up with that strong wave of votes. Can't wait to test it :)

eSports. PvP games are popular to developers because of the tie in to eSports and the extra monetization that can be gleaned from it. I think CU will be a fantastic game, I loved playing DAoC as well. I also think Pantheon will be a long term home for people who like cooperative gameplay more than they like PvP.

But wait.....I thought it was a FACT nobody like this kind of games, as no one has time to play them anymore.
I guess people will find the time after all.

And by the way just because Pantheon won a poll by a huge margin, we are not saying it will be a huge success by proxy (that's up to VR to make it a success).
What we keep saying is that there is big interest for Old School games, and there is a market bigger than some people think, still a niche but it's a big niche, and it's untapped because of the industry monolithic stance on refusing to make games that don't fit the mainstream agenda.

By the way congratz to Brad, Kilsin, Joppa and the rest of the team, you are doing a great job so far, and please let's be gracious on the back of this result, we don't want to ruffle any feathers as some people are pretty sensitive around here.

Aah I see, yeah that makes sense. I never give esports any thought,.(Who can really tell what the characters are doing on the screen anyway, never mind a big screen, I still cant see anything else than some characters running around doing something random until one team dies :o  But thats just my oppinion of course)

I think I will focus on CU, even its a full pvp world outside the starting areas, but while I will spend a lot of time designing my characters and exploring the possibilities with the crafting system, I will feel uncomfortable knowing I cant just stroll along peacefully without something arbitrary happening all of a sudden, that interrupts my focus.

So sadly probably wont be a long adventure, but still a company that goes that far into race and class creation deserves to be rewarded.

Pantheon. Well it does have the PvE world that I favor, but at the same time, not having any kind of PvP areas on PvE server to mix the game up a bit, when I feel like doing a bit of one thing or the other, makes the world seem onesided.

Also mmmfh there is something very serious about the character models in Pantheon that does not really appeal to me. So I assume its a game that is meant to be taken serious, but I am just not that kind of player. Does not mean I would not be able to make some characters that Id like to look at, but I miss races with a slight goofyness I prefer in their apperance.

     Anyway, thats down to preference.

I guess I just want WoW races again, the way the models were before the era of pissed off gnomes.

But WoW is ruined, so waiting for that PvE game with voluntary pvp elements with CUs creativity in races and house creation.

Yeah now I think about it, that is actually what Id like.

And no hard ball game must be so hard that you need 3 PHDs to be able to finish it.

    Just a happy game.

While we do take into account proxies for the votes that is not the only dimension we look at to determine validity.  Many other data points are evaluated to ensure we do not disqualify legitimate votes.

Also it's much cheaper to develop a PvP game than it is to develop a PvE game since you don't really need to worry about content: quests, raids, etc.

    Indeed.

But if the ones making the PvE games didnt have such a busy time tweaking classes and designing raids that always have to appeal to the hardcore Einstein population, maybe we could some day get a pretty decent relaxed, fun PvE game, worthy to explore, a game with all the elements of an AAA game, full of creative ideas when it comes to content, than the beaten up horse "What should we do guise, oh I dont know, make a raid?" Which takes a full year, cause they have to of course make 100 versions of it to please all.

But I think you are right yeah, its the money deciding, way way too much.

I can't speak for anyone other than myself but if a game is really good, like i mean an HONEST 8/10,i would pay 30 maybe even 40/50 a month. However there are stipulations, that money goes towards future content, you are not raking in 100 million every few months then trying to sell me that next expansion.

Then if i feel you are sitting back enjoying your new found wealth instead of working on the game,i am gone in short order.
We can easily see why so many of these games do so well, even if they get say 3 months out of the player base at 15 a month that is an extra 45 bucks added onto the cost of the game,so that could be somewhere around 100 bucks for, pretty steep.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Maybe it won't end up being as niche as advertised...  It is a bit concerning.

Not sure there was ever a question that there was a player base for a game like EQ....er Pantheon.
Especially on a niche gaming site for a niche genre. The question was how much of that interested player base that would vote for a game like Pantheon would actually sub to the game.

    Nope.
If that was the case I would not have argued in 3 different threads and countless posts, as I am the first one to say that having a big potential player base doesn't necessarily translate in having a big actual player base (re-read my posts if you have time).

Some people, and I don't necessarily mean you, think that "this kind of game" is a tiny niche, because "people today have no time to play this type of games".
THAT comment is recurring in many posts of different members, and it is actually that comment that gets me going (not the actual criticism of Pantheon), as it is not true.
People seems not to have a clue how many hours today teenagers spend playing games, my little brother and his friends spend 3-4 hours a day playing COD, and during week ends God knows how long they play for.

I made so many posts trying to explain the difference between "potential" and "actual" player base, but some people were adamant to point out that the "potential" player base was tiny (not the actual), and that's what I find annoying.
Busy people that has now family, kids and a career who obviously do not have the same time to play as they had 15 years ago (no shit), who think that their condition applies to everyone else and almost pass it as a fact, not an opinion, making it look like making a game like Pantheon is a lost cause regardless of the final quality of the game.

I want more diversity in the MMORPG industry, putting down games that try to do something different from the mainstream garbage should be encouraged not frowned upon, and that applies to Pantheon, CU, Crowfall and the rest of them.
    That's my point.

Ok, folks. See the attached screen cap for the new results, post-scrubbing. As you can see, by a wide margin our official winner is Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen. Congrats to the Visionary Realms team on their win.

As you might have guessed, the largest amount of false votes came from MU Legends. We are contacting Webzen immediately for a statement. For all we know, overzealous fans could be the culprit, or a sole actor within the community. We'll report back what we find out.

A new poll for the best MMO Expansion or Update of the year will be launched tomorrow or Friday. Stay tuned!
Thank you Bill and Meddle for all of your hard work, we all want a fair competition and appreciate the time and effort you spent on making sure that was the case :)

Grats to Pantheon. That was a hefty cut.

@Aori And it''s cool that you don't care for Pantheon bud. I'm just happy to see gaming in this genre offering some varying choices again. The recent cadre of MMORPGs are in large part twitch-based combat systems with rapid fire leveling and, imo, less distinct feeling class design (yes, I'm a fella that liked the tank, healer, dps, CC and +2 design). Pantheon takes it back to a more traditional system with a focus on grouping.

If you don't like that, all good. Plenty of other stuff these days. Just less twitch-preferring peeps like me can watch on this one. Regardless, if ya hop in at launch I hope to see ya then. Take care bud. :)

Oh my goodness...Pantheon won after all.   I was good with it either way,  was nice to see people's interest in Pantheon.    Well Congratulations after all Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen,  and the VR Devs and community! :)  What a nice surprise. :)

These games don't last long though, I don't think Pantheon will be any exception. I just don't understand the 10 steps back in every direction approach.

The whole all or nothing is just a weird idea to me. You can do a nostalgic style game without yesterdays tedious inconveniences and graphics.

You are free to either create or support a title that fits your wants, a lot of us have found that in Pantheon. I don't see it as a step back in any direction, more a deviation forward back to the path of a community/group focus first approach. I'm not sure why anyone who plays MMOs would not want more variety in available titles.

I view modern games with their "conveniences" a huge step backwards.

Always has been about game play over graphics in my book as well.
