I've been "the guild leader" exactly 0 times.

However I've been an officer I think about 3 times.  Once in Everquest 2 and 2 times in WoW.

All guilds are lost to time now.

I was co-creating a guild in Middle Earth Online for what was to become Lord of the Rings Online, managing forum recruits and applications, but I eventually let my usual patience destruct on me and I bailed before its beginning.

I don't know if that circle ever came to pass.....

Being a guild leader is like a job its nuts man, nty.
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

It's worse than that.  It's like babysitting adult-age children.

Did it once; would not do it again.

1 was in Soldiers of Fortune 2, another was in Star Wars Galaxies and the other two were in World of Warcraft.

Never thought of myself as a leader, don't even think I'm any good at it but... if no one else is up for it I just do it to get it over with. :p

I've done it 3 times but damn... its heartbreaking!! gut wrenching! drama inducing... depressing... backstabbing..... just bunch of bad. I was a great leader though, way better than most leaders, but I put too much heart into it and ended up feeling like I put too much effort into it in the long run.

    I started these guilds/clans:

Banshees - Vanguard (was pretty well known and probably longest running in my server)

House of Shadows & Rock Stars - Darkfall

I pretty much stayed with the same guild through all MMOs I played. The guild was/is called Divine Retribution and it started 2001/2002 I think.

I joined in 2007 in LotRO. When WAR was released, I started a new branch of our guild there, so that was my first time leading. When I returned to LotRO, I took over as leader, then when SW:TOR launched I started a new branch there too.

So, only been guild leader of 1 guild, but did it in 3 different games.

I loved being guild leader. Yeh, it was time consuming and could get stressful, but I put in a lot of effort at the start to essentially establish best practices in the guild (loot rules, progression raiding, training programs, formal applications etc), after which point the guild kinda ran itself. We stopped having arguements about loot because I'd established clear loot rules. We stopped having arguements about not progressing fast enough, because I'd implemented progression raids for the top raiders and implemented a training program.

The only thing I never managed to automate / outsource was the raid leading. I'm the sort of guy who would rather be a follower, but I can't stand to follow people who aren't good enough. So, 99% of groups/raids I was in, I was the leader because I knew I'd do it best and quickest. However, that gets tiresome after a while as you end up joining a group just to help a guildie, but all of a sudden you have to lead it because that is what is now expected of you.

The main benefit of being a guild leader is somewhat selfish. I basically moulded the guild to fit my personal needs and desires. This meant recruiting likeminded individuals, raiding on my sort of schedule and following my rules. I like to think I ran a good guild, pretty much everyone in it seemed happy and we stayed together for many years across many games.
