Do sites that give you no game info actually get you to sign up?

Every once in a while I see an ad here for a game and I'm like "Ok, that might be cool. Let's check it out."  Almost every time i do that it takes me to a page that is nothing more than
  • the game name
  • fields for email address and password
  • a "Play Now" button

No screenshots. No videos. No feature list. And no links to anything beyond that page. Since the days of Grepolis, Evony, Ikariam and the thousand other PBBGs these landing pages have been around, so evidently they work, but....WHY?

What is the benefit to the user (you and me) to give out an email address or link FB/G+ to a site that the user knows nothing about. Any insight on what kind of person does this or even why it's done?

Is it sheer curiosity of what's behind the curtain?
