We're going to get a taste of how that pans out in a more persistent format soon. A Westworld TV series is coming to HBO soon.

Fuck yes.  I really like Red Dead Redemption.

    Same.

Perhaps the OP has never heard of it.

    GTA in the wild west.

I played Deadlands - a Wild West paper & pencil RPG that had supernatural elements to it. It was a fun game.

I LOVE Firefly and that definitely has Wild West elements to it. I'm not sure an MMO can pull it off though - blending lasers and space ships with bullets and horses.

@anemo: thank you, that link was very helpful.

@mmoguy43: I'd be glad to once this poll runs its course.

@SavageHorizon: I've heard of it but never played it because it's a console single player game (I know it has co-op; that doesn't count).

We may get a chance to see how such a game pans out soon.

"The game’s vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience."

Does that necessarily mean MMO? Slim chance, but I'm anxious to find out.

With the success of GTA:5 Online and even RDR online I don't see why we won't get it.

It is not even going to be released on PC. I loved playing RDR on my 360 but the whole time I thought it would have been so much better on my PC. Was hoping this time around they would bring it to PC.  I do not think RDR 2 will be anything near MMO status though. Probably more like GTA V Online.

I think that a MMO with a western theme would be a great game. Even a game along the lines of HBO's new serial West World could be interesting. I just hope that if and when they do it, they make it authentic and don't have sci-fi or magical elements to it.

Let's party like it is 1863!

I would play it if it had a resource system like SWG, and a good crafting system, with a player ran economy like eve online. If it was just another themepark copy of wow with cowboys, no i would not play it.

Anyway i still think a western mmorpg without any supernatural elements won't  really work, it's ok for single player action games but not for an actual rpg there are not enough elements for character development for example.
Luckily there are enough elements in the weird west genre (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weird_West)
to make this work a mmo based on Deadlands: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadlands
would be a good start for example.

You can't really beat Blazing Saddles and Wild Wild West imo  B)

honourable mention to 'carry on cowboy' though, because westerns need humour to be interesting.

Well it is relatively untouched theme for mmorpgs, so it would be a niche a company could dominate.

The next question would be would it be "realistic" or have supernatural or sci-fi elements? I tend toward realistic simply because again it's an underserved market, but I really enjoyed the Lovecraftian elements in the tabletop game Shadows of Brimstone.

But in the end, I can go with just about any semi-adult theme as long as it does two things:

    1. At least be an illusion of mmo. I've come to the realization that I don't care if a game is actually an mmo as long as it feels like one. Destiny did this brilliantly imo.

    2. At least weave an illusion of player agency and world persistency. I have to sense that what I do contributes to effects in the world at large for everyone else. Just running the final mission over and over and having no effect on the world is just dead wood.

I would be very interested in a wild west MMO... Hopefully one will eventually come. The concept could make a very good sandbox. A themepark basis would take away truly becoming an outlaw or taking up with the law. Or both depending on say the location. I may like one town and its laws, but hate another and decide to gather the gang and overthrow the authority, burn down the town and rebuild it as my own. Would just be awesome.

That was probably because you were the only you in that game. Now imagine a version of that game where you are subjected to the whims and fancies of a thousand you, many of which are not as benign as you may be.

You're probably thinking of this very thread - it was started on September 16th.

Nice to see that the Wild West theme seems to be sustaining its interest on this site.
