PvE only doesnt originate from the MMORPG genre.

It was added later when MMORPG's became mainstream.

MMOPRG meant to be Open World and in the world forced pvp is possible.

Wait, what? One of the very first MMORPGs, UO added a PVP optional server because they realized they missed their mark.

EQ1, another early MMORPG launched with a PVE only server. Lineage 1 launched in the US and guess which server was more popular.

Asherons Call 1, yep, separate PVP hardcore server.  DAOC, PVP locked in seperate zones.

While forced PVP was a design choice by a handful of early titles, developers quickly realized the error of their ways and provided an option that has proven to be far more popular.

WOW mainstreamed MMORPGs in 2004, long after PVE had firmly entrenched itself into their design.

There is certainly a niche for open world PVP games and AA does a good job of preventing wanton slaughter, and as others have said, there's no need for a PVE only server.

But let's face it, PVP is likely the greatest driver of cash shop purchases, so a PVE only server has a lower profit potential so why would they bother?

Pen and Paper is played by a group of well known like minded mostly friends.

Internet brought a lot of anonymous, inteligent and errationaly acting persons into the mix that might
not always act cooperative but antagonistic in the open world.

That was the moment where out single (or a co-op Pen and Paper game played by few) player PvE  game became a massive  multiplayer RPG PvP game.

It doesn't matter if they later wanted to attract the mainstream and changed the ruleset to PvE.

Just admit it aready that back in the time  the biggest addition and thrill of the newly invented MMORPG's was the inteligent antagonistic human opponent(s) !  ;)

Just the conflicting concurent ideas i noticed here.

A lower profit potential in a cash shop heavy game. That distinction needs to be made. In the end just because the first MMOs had PvP as a part of their ruleset does not make it the "proper" way to run them. PvP is hugely popular overall when speaking about those titles meant only for PvP, such as LoL, Overwatch, etc. but in titles where PvE is also a part of the meta PvP takes a nosedive in popularity by comparison. Does that make it any less important? Nope.

I see so the PvE in this game is bad then. Well no point in trying it then.
Unfortunately if you are looking purely for PvE then I think that's a solid choice. This just isn't the game for you. The absolutely most fun PvE in the entire game is PvE/PvP combos like the leviathan and overseas trade runs and removing the PvP aspects from those removes most of the fun.

This is a game targeted at people who either love or can tolerate PvP. If you are not interested in at least becoming tolerant of it and only want to fight NPCs, I would never suggest this game to anyone in a million years.

Some of the greatest features of the game such as the level of character customization would become redundant and useless in a PvE only environment. Most of the really unique / interesting builds are for PvP while the best PvE builds tend to all be min-maxed healers, min-maxed DPS, and min-maxed tanks.

I think what he said was that though pve servers are more popular, the inclusion of a cash shop that allows for any edge, for pvp players, makes it more profitable. A smaller group buying more.

Whether this is true or not is another thing though there is some merit to the argument.

IDK why you enjoy taking all your gold and pouring it into an RNG upgrade that might end up being destroyed.  Yet you do not want to risk running through a pvp zone hoping not to get attacked.  At least in 1 of those scenarios you lost 1 hour of hard work and in the other you have lost 20 hours of hard work.

    No.

MMORPG's have been invented to include all playstyles in same world (aka Ultima Online).

A world excluding any PvP isn't "believable" and so its a MMORPG without PvP.
(same goes of course for MMORPG's without crafting or building houses etc)

The most successful MMO's out there are currently voluntary PVP only, so your argument bears no merit.
World of Warcraft - optional PVP
FFXIV:ARR - optional PVP, what there is in terms of PVP is not worth mentioning.
    SW:TOR - optional PVP
    ESO - optional PVP
well, its a long list, but those are probably among the highest rated, they also are among the most successful MMO's out there, which is something that can't be said about the strictly PVP orientated games, which tend to have much lower player base, and occupy a much smaller niche, at least in terms of MMO's. :o
HUH? WoW is not OPTIONAL pvp. There is a war.. and if you want to quest in the world, you are open to PvP. Its just that death has zero meaning in WoW, hence people seem to forget that WoW has open world ganking on a large number of their servers.
It kills the overall feeling of virtual open world if no one can pk you.
Take Tera for example, 99% of players are in towns camping dungeons.
One of the most beautifull worlds in gaming, empty.

Archeage would be great if it wasnt so onesided towards swiping, whales and p2w.
Thats why ppl choose to be non-competetive in pvp in that game, its becouse they lack few hundreds or thousands of $ to compete.(or 6 months of nolife time)

Archeage has good measures in place to balance the forced pvp aspect well.

Literally safe zones, paece timers in PvP enabled zones, bigger reward  in PvP zones vs. the safe zones.
Hence the  consequenzes from open PvP aren't that  harsh, compared to other full loot open world PvP games i know.

    >Archeage has good measures in place to balance the forced pvp aspect well.

Not good enought obviously. Basically every event out there, every opportunity to explore, or archieve reasonable profit is met with open world pvp.
It is possible to "Carebear" your way up the ladder by ONLY being in peace zones, hm, but that is way too repetitive and restrictive of like most of the real content in Archeage.

So yeah, choice exists, no one forces you to go pvp, or p2w, or whatever, its how you play the game.
