Okay, after making a bet on No Man's Sky and losing- I'm a little short on game funds. Therefore, I decided to entertain myself with something free that I had purchased a long time ago. I fired up GW2 and confusingly looked at my level 40 Necro (it has been a while) and thought to myself that I should start over so that I could familiarize myself with the game once more. Bear in mind, I have not bought the expansion- I'm just wandering back in for a decent game to play without any economic strains. My question is, besides the Necro, which class delivers the most fun and dynamic combat and with what weapon set? I started a thief and warrior but they are very young and seem like their melee attacks could get old. Should I go for long range spell casting or Ranger or do some of the melee classes get a lot more action packed with more levels? I'm asking because all I have had experience with has been the Necromancer and that was a very long time ago. Thanks for any feedback.

Even the Elementalist can conjure a lightning hammer to bash people at melee range and an engineer can go bombs or whack people with their tool kit.
Pretty much every class can have builds that have you swap weapons and use some complicated rotations if you so chose to.
For that reason it is hard to say what is entertaining to some one.
I for example like the necromancer way of building life force and then enter death shroud (especially like the reaper shroud that is part of HoT). I also like engineer builds that have me use 2-3 kits and use skills from all of them.
I'm not so keen on the thief steal/stealth/back stab or the mesmer phantoms/clones manipulation but they allow similar rotation concepts.
Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders
melee dragon hunter / guardian
ranger
pistol engineer
reaper

Shattering clones is pretty fun - the downside is that without the endgame specialisation which makes them respawn you will not be able to do the insane bursts of 6 clones within moments.
But hey trying won't hurt. Go with staff skill 2 and 3 to quickly create clones for shattering and then scepter with pistol or torch for more clones and direct attacks.
Go either with power for the bursts or conditions which synergizes with scepter skill 3 and burst skill 2.
Personally I would suggest going with conditions because Anet wanted to get rid of berserker builds and gave more meaning to conditions in general.
Elementalist - Dual Dagger
And last but not least:
Engineer - 24/7 Flamethrower baby!
Core engineer with dual pistols and condi build is delivering much more damage in PVE than its elite spec counterpart, so that can be an option too, although with full kit build its playstyle will require some degree of good hand-eye coordination akin to D/D ele.

However I find it hard to imagine that they would kick a power ele out. (Assuming that you don't die too much)
Dungeons are heavily gear based but you will also get some rewards for clearing them the first time in story mode which is nice if you aren't geared up yet.
Your best bet is probably to use the lfg tool and search for parties who are willing to explain mechanics and carry beginners instead of hardcore farmers who just want to clear the instance asap.
GW2 is currently going through a nerf all classes phase so be forewarned... probably so they can buff'em back up during the holidays for stronger numbers.

It can be a little overwhelming at first, as they have 20 weapon skills, but once you get the hang of it you feel like an master of elements. The Fresh Air Trait is also nice incentive to keep swapping between elements, as with high enough crit chance it will keep recharging air attunement so you will always have air element to go back into. Each element has it's role and as a whole the weapon set covers a lot of ground in terms of dps, defense, debuffing and utility.
A very different class from all the others, your attacks don't have cooldown, instead you use refilling initiative which mean you can spam all your attacks or save it and use them carefully. Constantly moving or dodging in a fight since standing still will get you killed but once you get that right the survivability is very high.
I use Dagger/dagger for max DPS and pistol/pistol for ranged combat. Sometimes I use a staff as well and at rare occasions sword/dagger.
Thief is the hardest class after mesmer to master but it is really fun and it will learn you to really get the movement while you fight right fast.
Played: Guild Wars, AoC, Lotro, CoH, Warhammer, Tabula Ras, Spellborn, Second Life, Rift, Aion, Tera.
Playing: Guild Wars 2, WoT
It is the class that killed my thief more then all other classes in PvP though, any class can kill med but I usually beat down any unless the player is really good. The mesmer though for some reason is far harder to handle even if I get my twin dager into the right mesmer she is a goner fast (I say she because for some reason are male mesmers rare in both GW games).
Mesmer is easily the hardest class to master but the ones that do are bloody dangerous. Still, while it is super effective against thieves my warrior kills them without a second thought (warriors are one of the classes I kill easiest with my thief though).
That is PvP, in PvE I feel that the mesmer is somewhat underpowered, but that might just be because it is one of the 2 classes I never been really good with (the other is engineer, but that is because I never really liked that one).
But back then it was killing me that every 2nd weapon i got looked the same and clones were quite bugged.
To tame a pet you just need to find Juvenile versions of them. They are sometimes in hard to reach areas and guarded by adults.
Currently HoT pets are the most powerful, but lynx is a good core pet to get. It really is up to you. Some pets are good at burst damage, some good at pressure, and some for support if you trait them for it.
I would have to go with the Engineer... So much diversity in a single class... There is a reason people are having a hard time finding out the best Engineer builds,,, there are so many options and all choices are viable...
