"An international investigation into the activities of Lizard Squad and PoodleCorp (operators of for-hire Denial of Service or DDoS attacks) has resulted in two men being charged with “conspiring to cause damage to protected computers”. An Illinois Department of Justice statement names Zachary Buchta (19) from Maryland, and Bradley Jan Willem van Rooy (also 19) of Leiden, in the Netherlands, as the charged pair."

Even though this is great, I highly doubt they'll get the maximum.

Still, I'm willing to bet that will be sufficient to at least keep those kids from trying that again.  Just a hunch.

Agreed, glad to see something happened with this.  Would like to see more of it in the future.

hmm, I don't think he was saying anonymity is a bad thing.  Just that the anonymity of the internet tends to make people think they can get away with anything on the internet.

Pretty sure he was implying that they thought their criminal activity would be shielded by the anonymity of the internet.

And it wasn't just the DDoS attacks they were doing:

Zachary Buchta and Bradley van Rooy, both 19, have been arrested respectively in Maryland and the Netherlands. Lizard Squad, and since June, PoodleCorp, are known for launching distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against online services for the lulz. On top of that, they allegedly sold their DDoS services to others on the domain stresser.poodlecorp.org.

In addition to running cyber-attack-for-hire services, Buchta and van Rooy also allegedly “trafficked payment accounts that had been stolen from unsuspecting victims in Illinois and elsewhere,” the statementreads. Thousands of people allegedly fell victim to that scheme.

They're definitely looking at some time. And there's no parole for federal crimes.

Elaborate on what you consider "people think they can get away with anything on the internet".

    Give a few examples.

The punishment should fit the crime.  They should only be allowed to use dialup to get online for the next decade.
