MMO's have no real life following. The only people who make money off of them are gold farmers and game companies. Look at MOBA's they have a real life presence, they rent out stadiums. There are teams and national competitions.

While MMO's are fun in all the fictional novels about people who play them society has some type of affect. They pay bills by selling items, being famous in the game is being famous in real life. There is no connection, while MOBA's have a real life  connection.
Sorry to burst that little unreality bubble, but, most likely outside of Asian fans etc. nobody knows not just who your talking about, but what your talking about.

I think thats one of those things where some cultures differ greatly, outside of the Asian gaming market, which is huge, there are players, but they are not as numerous as people think, and i seriously doubt there is any real recognition of who they are or what they  have done, and certainly no celebrity status to be gained.
Just check out this esports chart for LoL, its easy to see just from that where the real interest in LoL stems from, and where, when you are talking about millions of players for LoL, just where the bulk of those players actually are, sure, in those countries its quite likely that they are famous.

And the full loot PVP RPG MMO's days are numbered.  More and more players are not willing to waste time getting the resources to make the things to gear up again, and dealing with griefers.   Darkfall New Dawn and Darkfall Rise of Agon will fail sooner rather than later as they think full loot = fun from from listening to a very loud minority and don't grasp how the repetitive gear up scenario chips away at the fun factor.  It is the age of the MOBA now.

You are talking about a type of MMO that has never gained any popularity in the first place. Why do you think exactly that games like WoW, FFXIV:ARR, GW2, SW:TOR, ESO, etc. have so much more popularity than any MMO that encompasses full loot PVP.

If players of games like Lineage etc. start abandoning their game for LoL, then maybe you can say its the 'age of the MOBA' though honestly, if you were waiting for that, i think your a bit late, MOBA's plateaud long ago, and its likely games like Overwatch are encroaching on MOBA territory, so at this point, MOBA's are most likely in a downward trend. :p

It looks Riot are going to make an MMORPG now, so I think that says all that needs saying.
Do you have a source for this?

As a player of Eve since 2004, i don't really put Eve in that bracket, PVP is an aspect of the game, but unlike so many others, there is much much more to the game than just PVP.

as for Runespace, never played, never likely to play, not sure what the demographic is that does play it, but i've heard its quite young :o

Riot isn't directly making it. They helped fund a mmorpg, but I can't find the company name.

Nothing confirmed by Riot yet. And I admit it seems I misinterpreted the story about Bonfire games when I first read it. Riot invested in the studio, I initially though they would work under Riot.

Then there is this kind of stuff

I can't find another article I read with some more hints.

    and you know this because?

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2016/09/13/riot-games-reveals-league-of-legends-has-100-million-monthly-players/#2ef6caf810b1

LoL grew from 67M monthly player in 2014 to 100M in 2016 ... does not sound like "plateau-ing" to me, unless you are a conflicting data source.
