Do MMOs tend to have too skimpy of armor?

I was looking for a new free MMO, which most are based out in Asia. I wanted an action combat one with some focus on PVE, since I already play WoW for a "normal" combat MMO. I couldn't find too many european/US based action MMOs that are free. But I did find TERA, Black Desert Online (buy to play), and some other free MMOs. But nearly all of them looked incredibly skimpy, where the armor barely covered them up.

TERA looked the worst for this, it has a little kid race and it looks as revealing as when I go to the beach and see all the skimpy bathing clothes. That is why I don't go to the beach in California, because I don't want to see little kids wearing that junk. In my view, they should be covered up. Same with in games. But in TERA, I can play a male and have normal armor. But I still have to see all the females and the kid race wearing armor I don't want to look at or want in my house.

BDO didn't seem as bad, but the female armor still was vastly skimpier looking than the male counterparts.

of course, there is Everquest 2 and FFXIV which has normal armor, but that wasn't the type of MMOs I'm trying to find.

Why do so many MMOs (and even singleplayer games often run into this) have barely any armor coverage on females, but on males they are completely normal and look vastly more realistic? I don't agree with the SJW on many things, but I do agree that there seems to be some agenda of having females looking incredibly skimpy and the males not.

To be honest, I'd be completely fine with it, if the males had skimpy armor too. But they never do for some reason?

And of course, WoW definitely has the same issue, but it also has a lot of normal armors for females to choose from. So that is okay. And you can make male characters have skimpy armor too. But WoW seems to be only MMO to allow skimpy females AND males, OR normal armor coverage for both.

Not sure what the deal is, but looking at these MMOs made it seem like I was looking for softcore porn. That is NOT what I want in my house at all. Again, I'd be okay with it (like in WoW) if males could be skimpy, but there is a huge issue when its only females in a vast majority of MMOs.

What is everyones thoughts on this?

I feel that a certain segment of the community wants me to say that it is wrong for them to do that or will say something if I say it is ok.   If life was about shutting down anything that someone might have an issue with we would have nothing.

It is weird but unfortunately it sells.  It is a cheap way of expanding your player base with a bit of soft core allure but these guys are in it for the money so I don't see it leaving anytime soon.  They cater to demographics and if a hotty in a bikini takes just as much time to design(or even less) than a proper full suit of armor than its a win/win for them.  I actually refused to try Tera with some friends after I read about the girl character design and the sort of gamer that was into it.  Im not a prude but I am a 40yo married male and I find it a bit disturbing.  Im sure my 14 yo gamer self may have felt differently.

Im sure somehow Rust with it's full naked males with weiner size locked to your steam account(seriously wtf) wouldn't make you feel any better.  I have to admit it was good for a laugh when my friends and I first loaded up the game, but seriously W T F.

    Yeah, creepy.

Well, I can understand it sells. But, it seems like they'd be targetting at the wrong crowd. Either the very young teen/kid crowd, or...well...all I can think of when I see TERA, the pedo crowd. I don't know what person, company or anything would ever want to attract pedos, but in the US at least, they are the most hated people in prison, and outside prison. Psycho murderers even hate them. Why the heck would a game want to target them lol.

Again though, I did say in my post. I'd actually be okay with skimpy armor if males could have them as well...(not on kids though, that is just completely wrong, honestly I think TERA was designed by a pedo whoever came out with that race and armor for it)....

but in general, why can't males also then skimpy armor? I'd be okay with adult female characters having skimpy armor, if males could too. Why don't they design male armors in that way? WoW does in a few of their armors, but most games don't even let that be an option

I think there is a lot going on here, that's my thought.

So it's close to softcore porn if it's just women but throw in men and it ceases to be close to softcore porn?

And looking at little kids at the beach elicits a negative response? There are many people who look at little kids on the beach and don't think thoughts that require them to be covered up.

I suppose it's good to know one's triggers but I suggest looking more closely at that.

As far as the main thrust of your point, this has been discussed a lot over the years. Is it as simple as "sex sells" and they are selling it primarily toward men/adolescents?

Does it center on the idea of "strong male"/"female as sex object"?

There are games that have somewhat skimpier outfits; for men. Conan and of course Black Desert has an interesting one that looks "sort of" greek (I'm not sure I'm getting that right but it's my first response) for warriors.

I have no problems with developers making the game they want or making it toward a specific demographic. I guess in the end, i don't care. I don't look at the "kid races" and think illicit thoughts so I can't relate. I see why that could make some people uncomfortable but having seen enough art and read enough literature I fully know there are more taboo things out there that actually mean to be taboo.

I suppose the world is a great big place and there are multiple ways for "artists" to express themselves that will either tantalize or horrify and we all just need to deal with it in the healthiest way possible.

I always find it odd how games often praise character customization and then you put on this armor and cant see your character. Character customization is irrelevant for me.  I usually choose default and within minutes Im in game, although I know a large segment of the playerbase of MMOs gets excited about making a character.  I don't even care if I'm playing a male or female which is another big issue.

Giving options in armor would be the best solution.  There are obviously people who care about having appropriate armor so it doesnt seem difficult to simply offer an option.  I wear whatever is available so doesnt concern me, but I would think having options would be the best way to handle this.

It's easier for the market to appeal to gender roles, these roles have been influenced by society, culture and the media overtime and make it easier to sell gender products to each human consumer. Even when it's disguised within a game. We've all been raised to be male or female, and to buy or avoid what appeals or doesn't to our societal upbringing and our animal instincts.

Characters should be completely nude. I hate it when features such as clothing and gameplay disrupt my evening entertainment.

We all know clothing is merely an agenda to drive cash shop sales!

Try lotro it has a pretty well developed wardrobe system with an enormous range of choices possible and in trying to stay true to tolkien lore there are very few revealing outfits.

Personally I think the important thing is choice, if you want your characters to be wearing very conservative outfits you should have that option while I should have the option to dress mine as revealing as I like.  Game developers do not have responsibility to push a political agenda.  Ultimately it is up to the players to decide what succeeds and fails.

Lol! Maybe so but I guess I just always separated my sex from gaming.  Seems like a strange combo to me.

Seeing kids at the beach in bathing suits, yeah whatever its the norm and people dont really notice.  A game isnt like that. A game is staring at that ass for hours and hours as it hacks and slashes its way through mobs.   Then I stop and pick up a new outfit for her.  Then I RP a bit...  you see where this can go.  Lets not confuse things here.

It varies by game.  I think Scarlet Blade's armors are excessively skimpy and Wizard 101's are not.

Fortunately, however, this is something that it's easy to check on.  If armor skimpiness (or lack thereof) is an important feature to you, look it up before you buy the game.  Screenshots are easy to come by.  If you buy a game, load it, and play it only to be shocked at the armors, it's your own fault for not checking on it earlier in that cycle.

    Sex sells.
I wrote a paper on this for my masters level ethics class a few months ago and it turns out that modern research shows sex doesn't sell except for in one instance; when the product is sex or sex related.  In other words, the Carl's Junior advertisements with supermodels writhing around on cars while stuffing hamburgers in their faces are just laughable.  The majority of the audience knows that none of those women has seen a hamburger in years and probably spits out the bites they eat during filming.

However, when the product is, for instance, Victoria's Secret, then it sells very well.  Millions of women see the idealized Adriana Lima walking around barely clothed and they want to emulate that for the men in their lives, so they buy up lingerie to the tune of billions of dollars a year.

That being said, if the product is sex, then it sells, therefore a game where your character runs around in skimpy clothes and slaying scaly beasts by the millions is considered sexy by many.  One of the top downloaded mods for Skyrim, FO:NV and FO4 is the Caliente's Beautiful Bodies mod.  These mods beat out other mods in downloads by the millions.

So, in the case of video game entertainment, there's a very good case for sex selling and I really don't think it should be changed.  Rather, I think that outfits should have selectable modesty options.  For instance, if you pick up chainmail chest piece, then you can use a slider or pulldown menu to choose how revealing you want it to be.  Remember, we should want more choices in our games, not more restrictions.

Armour, unless explained otherwise through lore, should be extremely conservative. After all, more coverage = more protection. However, there should definitely be cosmetic outfits that allow you to dress as you wish out of combat.

Well, those Asian games have a very limited numbers of armor you can wear at all times. Most Western games have several times as many skins to choose from so they will add a mix between skimpy and armor that actually cover you and at least look semi useful.

It is to cut the budget of course, but I have no idea why people in Chine and South Korea accept that most toons look so similar. Imagine if Wow, GW2 or ESO just would have 2 or 3 different armors for each type the first 20 levels... It would have been an outcry.

Do any of the men here answering this question know the number one style of women's shoe?  It's the strappy sandal.  Imagine a bare foot, on a thin sole held in place by the minimum material.  Think flip-flop if you will.  The second favorite style is the boot, a foot fully covered by material.

Believe it or not, armour styles have been tested on women.  Individually, data suggests most women prefer skimpy clothes, and armour.  Again back to IRL, number one fashion trend in women's dresses?  Short and sleeveless.  Women do own long sleeves and jeans, but prefer short skirts and spaghetti strap halter tops.  Example.  Notice the shoes in the last example.

I originally left this out.  Women have been observed on test servers.  Given access to all and a variety of armour types and styles.  Again the prefered style is the skimpy by 75%.  I comment every week that the exposed zipper in women's fashion is an indicator of a poor economy.  My three friend who are women's fashion writers insist it's just fashion.  Even when I say men wouldn't tolerate their jeans having an exposed zipper.  These women say they can't imagine going back to a covered women's dress zipper.  It destroys the smooth line.

When I lived in New England and the Northern MidWest we often saw teens standing in the snow waiting on the school bus in what could only be called Leotards with a fringe for skirts.

    @H0urg1ass Great comment/response!
The only thing I would like to add is that this is something that I have done some research on myself. If I would explain everything that I have discovered in this comment, it would become a litany. Of course, what I have theorized goes outside of just gaming. If we are just talking about sexualization in video games, this is my take on it.

I agree with @4507 I think it would make sense if the player is looking for immersion, to have armor that actually looks like something someone would wear when battling. I still think that players should have an option, some "feminazis" think it's just men that want their character to have "revealing" clothing, but that is not so. Some of the clothing options that I have chosen, they would like to see gone from video games. Like @TheFunky1 said, "I separate sex from gaming"; I don't get turned on from seeing my character (whether it be male or female), running around in revealing clothing. If people want to get turned on by that stuff, they need to check their heads (to put it nicely).

I still want the option to wear something revealing/feminine; I don't think we should be forced to wear chainmail (all the time). It's not just guys who like this stuff, girls like those clothing options too. I admit, it could be toned down a bit, but at the same time, our perception of what is "revealing" will be different from person to person; this is why it should be an option (if possible).

I always thought it was weird that games have such revealing armor for females. It gets to the point where I don't use certain armor BECAUSE of how it looks. Revealing armor never made sense to me, How does THAT protect you?! I mean seriously male armor looks so cool and effective while female armor just makes people question what was going through the designers minds as they created them.
Question of the day: "Looks or functionality?"

In Xenoblade Chronicles X there is revealing female armor BUT unlike a lot of other games, you can use other armor as a cosmetic look. Basically meaning the revealing armor is not visible but still functional while the non revealing/cool looking armor is visible. I think ALL games should have at least SOMETHING like that. Does anyone else agree>
  • KonfessKonfess Member RarePosts: 1,667
I absolutely agree with @Allerleirauh.  Just like we have a check box for obscenity filters couldn't we have a slider or check box for modesty armour?  One, I think Producers don't want to spend money on extra armour assets, but it will make more users feel comfortable playing the games.

    Blame Keith Parkinson :p

Arthurian fantasy and skimpy female clothing have gone hand in hand long before MMOs existed.

It's fantasy and I think comprises more of what people like than what they dislike. I'd be interested to see how many woman it bothers compared to men. I've always wondered how a woman can be seen as less powerful the sexier she is imagined. You'd think that with less armor she would be considered MORE powerful. Truth is woman can be both.

I don't get it?  In a Fantasy RPG world, why can't skimpy armor protect me?  I mean, the armor has magical traits and attributes doesn't it?

I'm a pretty open minded type of guy. I can appreciate all kinds of tastes in art styles. I just find that when a developer spends an inordinate amount of time trying to make their game look sexually appeasing. It usually means that other area's of game design that personally appeal to me, are usually lacking.
